Art Nouveau

Art nouveau (means ‘new art’ in French) is considered a 'total' style, meaning that it

can be applied in architecture; interior design; decorative arts including jewellery,

furniture, textiles, household silver and other utensils, and lighting; and the range

of visual arts. Art Nouveau (1890-1905) borrowed motifs

from Japanese wood prints, a Japanese interior design which had an angular, linear look, combining the grids and

parallel lines.

What is Batik?

• Batik is a method of applying wax and dye to fabric to create an image or design. It is a method of decoration that can be used to decorate pillows, bags or fabric for clothes or curtains.

• Batik is known as the art of decorating cloth using wax and dye; it has been practiced for centuries. In Java, Indonesia, batik is part of an ancient tradition, and some of the finest batik cloth in the world is still made there. The word batik originates from the Javanese ‘tik’ and means to dot.

• To make batik, selected areas of the cloth are blocked out by brushing or drawing hot wax over them, and the cloth is then dyed. The parts covered in wax resist the dye and remain the original color. This process of waxing and dyeing can be repeated to create more elaborate and colorful designs. After the final dyeing a fixing agent is used to fix the color to the fabric so the color does not run when washed.

Draw up a specifications list to be as ‘specific' as possible about what it is you are going to make. Number your list for example…

DesigningDESIGN IDEAS AND USING YOUR IMAGINATION- COME UP WITH SOME OF YOUR OWN IDEAS! Be careful when you aredrawing, you are not marked on how well you can draw, just how clearly you show your ideas with a good combination of drawnand written information. If you are stuck, you can always start by choosing one of your favourite cushions or image of inspiration that youhave researched and then draw adaptations and modifications to it.

Final Designs Draw your final design in 3D with clear justifications and annotations as to why you have selected this design as yourfinal design. Adjust the drawing by adding or taking away any aspect from your initial idea. You must show that there has beendevelopment and improvements. Don’t forget to add measurements.

You must now explain the good points to your batik cushion and any improvements you would

make to it. Always use full sentences with justifications to your answers.

1) How successful were you in meeting your specifications?

1) How do your class mates rate your product and why?

1) If you had to do this project again what would you do differently?

1) What did you learn in the project that was new to you?

1) Come up with 5 more questions to evaluate your own work and answer them.
