Ms. Meunier• Returning Teacher – 5th year at Ruthe

Deskin, 1st year teaching 3rd grade.• 3 years 5th, 1 year 4th• Originally from Minnesota where I was a

substitute teacher for 4 years.• I enjoy teaching because I believe that a

good education is the foundation for a more fulfilling life and I want to be a part of making that possible for your child.

Rewards and Consequences

• Students will earn tickets for following behavior expectations

Every week = two ticketsAdditional tickets for following

expectations• Lose a ticket for misbehavior or to buy a

privilege.• Any tickets left at a specified time go into a raffle

for a prize or activity. • See syllabus for more detail

More Incentives

• OUR CLASS• Student will work in Kagan learning groups and

can earn classroom points for following directions• Best groups will roll dice and total the points.

Points added to group total on the board• Whole class can earn a reward for reaching a total

goal amount for the time period.• OUR SCHOOL• Eagle feathers for SOARING life skills used in drawings for Eagle Tags• Eagle of the Week• Deskin Diner

First Day Packet• We will briefly discuss the items in the packet on

Monday• If you would like to take it home now, you may do

so and return it on Monday. Items included: ! Field Trip Permission! Computer Access Permission• Media Release Form• Student/Parent Handbook• Code of Honor• Education Accord– Free and reduced lunch applications are

now completed online (see your packet).

SafeKey• Please fill out a SafeKey form • Necessary for before and after school activities• We never know when things come up at the last

minute, so please fill out the form just in case.– Forms are available from the SafeKey

staff before and after school. – SafeKey requires a small deposit to enroll

a student (one hour fee). – The office closes at 4:00 so all children

must be home, in an afterschool activity, or Safekey. –At 3:45, the office will call the

attendance officer to transport students to the Boys and Girls Club on MLK and Lake Mead.

Homework• Expect up to 30 minutes each night per

district requirements– If it is taking longer, let me know so we can

make adjustments• Independent reading time: – 30 min each night should 2 ½ hours per week.

• Weekly math and language arts assignments packet

• Consequences:– Homework not turned in = lunch

detention until it is completed (Includes progress

reports)• OPTIONAL–Assignments available for enrichment»No time limit >>Earn stickers

Absences and Make-up Work

• Students receive a Missing in Action sheet when they return after absences.

• They are to review the assignments and ask me if they have questions. (Expect 30min HW nightly)

• Students have 3 days for each day absent to complete the work for full credit. (up to a MAX of 2 school weeks)

• Please let me know why your child was or will be absent. Written Excuses are required within THREE DAYS for EVERY absence

(even if your child is sent home ill)

Tardy Policy: Arriving after 9:10Gates open: 8:50am• PER TRIMESTER CONSEQUENCES:• 1st tardy – Warning• 2nd tardy – Warning• 3rd tardy – Lunch detention and phone call from

teacher• 4th tardy – Lunch detention and phone call from

administrator’• 5th tardy – Required Parent Conference

• If students are tardy, they will stay in the office until 9:40 to avoid disrupting morning reading intervention.

Keeping You InformedProgress Reports • Expect progress reports every 2 weeks – beginning

Sept. 26th. – Please sign and return progress reports (this

is an assignment). Your child will earn a ticket for turning in reports. Detention if not in by Friday

• Please watch for Missing Assignments! All work is considered “late” if not turned in the day it is due. I will make every effort to contact you about your child’s missing assignments to avoid any negative

impact on his/her grade. • Standards-based: Let me know if you have

questions

We Volunteers

• I am always looking for volunteers to help in the following areas:

• Class Parent – my “go to” person = Need by Sept. 30th

• Classroom assistance – working with students at their desks

• Secretarial – copying papers, filing, project preparation

• Fundraisers – help raise money for our class and our grade level.

– Field Trip Chaperones–PAC membership

• If you are interested in helping, please leave me your phone number and days/hours you are able to help.

• All volunteers must attend an Orientation before they can help in the classroom. The first one will be Sept 15th at 9:15am in the multi-purpose room. Others orientations will be on an “as needed” basis. Please see me if you need an alternate time.

• Third Grade• 5 single subject spiral notebooks• 5 pocket folders —plain colors red, blue, orange,

yellow, and purple (NO decorative folders)• Pencil box (5x8-1/2)• 3 dozen pencils (Dixon or Ticonderoga - preferred)• 2 packages dry erase markers• 4 colors of highlighters: pink, green, blue, &

yellow• Scissors—good quality• Wooden or plastic (not folding) inch and

centimeter ruler– 2 boxes of Kleenex * 1 roll of paper

towels
