Admission Letter

Exemption: If you have been awarded an exemption for a course,

do NOT take the course again at Concordia.

NOTE: If you take the course at Concordia, you will NOT earn credits for the course and NEITHER will the grade of the course count in your cumulative GPA. The grade, however, will count toward your current annual GPA.

Potential Exemption: - Not yet updated - Keep a close eye for updates. - Contact the person who signed the last page of your admission letter to update your potential exemptions.

NOTE: If you do not meet the minimum grade cut-off for exemption, your potential exemption will be REMOVED. NOTE: Set your time table with this in mind, especially if the exemption is a prerequisite for another course.

3

Econ Major (42 Credits)

Stage 1 - Econ 201 (micro) ↔ Econ 203 (macro) NOTE: Exemption is given if earned 75% or higher in certain CEGEPs. NOTE: Exemption has no credit value, you have to replace with another econ course, any level.

NOTE: If you have been given a potential exemption but you know that you will not meet the 75% cut-off, sign the PINK form.

Otherwise, you cannot register for the class until the potential exemption is removed.

- Econ 221 (stats I) → Econ 222 (stats II) NOTE: Econ 221 Prerequisite = Math 201 or Math 206. NOTE: Econ 222 Prerequisites = Econ 221 and Math 203 or Math 209.

4

Econ Major (42 Credits)

Math Exemptions - Math A: Equivalent to Math 436, too low of a level for Econ

- Math 201 Exemption: Passed Math 536, scored < 70% - Math 201 and 206 Exemptions: Math 536 scored ≥ 70% Either Math 201 or Math 206 exemption is sufficient for Econ. NOTE: If you do not have any math exemption or just Math A, register for Math 206 in the upcoming semester.

5

- Math 203 Exemption: Passed Calculus I, grade below 75%

- Math 203 and 209 Exemptions: Calculus I, grade 75% or higher

Either Math 203 or Math 209 exemption is sufficient for Econ. NOTE: Math 201/206 is the prerequisite for Math 203/209. NOTE: Econ major does not require Math 204/208 linear algebra. NOTE: If you do not have Math 203 or Math 209 exempted, register for Math 209 in the upcoming semester.

- What if you want to take Math 209 even though you have the Math 203 and/or Math 209 exemption(s)?

- Fill out the WHITE form, indicate you are aware you will not earn credits for the course and neither will the grade of the

course count in your cumulative GPA. The grade, however, will count in your current annual GPA. - We will then forward your request to the Faculty of Arts and Science for their review. They will notify you via email of their decision.

Econ Major (42 Credits) Stage 2 - Econ 301 → Econ 302 (Intermediate Micro) - Econ 303 → Econ 304 (Intermediate Macro) - One of: Econ 318 (Canadian Econ), Econ 319 (International Econ), Econ 324 (Stats III) - One 300-Econ elective, or GEOG 380, or COMP 201, or COMP 218

Stage 3 - Four (4) 400-econ Electives - Above courses usually require Econ 302, 304 and 222.

7

Statistics Courses Equivalences

- Different Departments require their students to take statistics courses. - Examples: - Econ 221 = Stat 249 = Psyc 315 = Geog 362 = Biol 322, etc. - Econ 222 = Stat 250 = Psyc 316, etc. - For Dept of Econ: Econ 221 = Comm 215 - For JMSB: Econ 221+222 = Comm 215 - You can only earn MAX = 6 such statistics credits. - For econ majors, we strongly suggest you take Econ 221+222. - When in doubt, always ask your professor teaching the course or see an econ adviser!

8

General Education Requirement - Concordia requires students to take at least 24 credits outside of their

major, of which six (6) of the 24 credits have to be outside of their

area/field.

- Example: - Economics is a social science. - For Econ students, six (6) of the 24 credits have to be outside of social science (such as science, humanities, fine arts, business, etc.) - Refer to Section 31.004 in the Concordia University Calendar.

9

Degree Requirements - Refer to Section 31.003 in the Concordia University Calendar. - For example, CEGEP students in 90-credit program:

Econ major = min 42 credits Non-econ courses = min 24 credits

Subtotal = 66 credits - The remaining 90-66 = 24 credits can be anything. - Can add a second major (42 credits) or a minor (24-30 credits).

10

Annual Assessment - Concordia assesses all students every April/May if the student has completed at least 12 credits in the previous 12 months. - Grade Point Average (GPA):

Grade Grade points Grade Grade points Grade Grade points Grade Grade points Grade Grade points

A+ 4.30 B+ 3.30 C+ 2.30 D+ 1.30 F, FNS 0

A 4.00 B 3.00 C 2.00 D 1.00

A- 3.70 B- 2.70 C- 1.70 D- 0.70

- Three outcomes: - Good standing: GPA ≥2.0

- Conditional standing: 1.5 ≤ GPA < 2.0 - Failed standing: 0 ≤ GPA < 1.5

11

- Consequences:

- Good standing: Business as usual.

- Conditional standing: Blocked account, meet with adviser.

In the subsequent year, students will be re-assessed. If GPA<2.0 again, have to withdraw from Concordia.

- Failed standing: Withdraw from Concordia, may have to stay

out for one year, can apply for readmission for September. If re-admitted, students will be reassessed in the subsequent year. If GPA<2.0 again, stay out of Concordia for three (3) years.

Other Issues

- Register for courses starting this afternoon. - List of courses: Go to http://www.concordia.ca, then “Quick Links”. - Registering for courses: https://my.concordia.ca - Add/Drop deadline with tuition refund: - Usually two (2) weeks after the first day of classes. - Add/Drop deadline without tuition refund: - Usually six (6) weeks into the semester. - “DISC” appears on your transcript, will NOT affect your GPA. NOTE: Do all your Add/Drop at noon of the deadline dates. NOTE: Go to Birk’s Student Center to take your student ID photo (after at least 48 hours from today’s orientation).

Ask JMSB on How to Transfer

- Econ does not know JMSB requirements for transfer.

- JMSB Undergraduate Student Affairs Office

- Important: BTM 200 = DESC 200 = INTE 290

NOTE: If you have been exempted for one of these courses, do not take the other two.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 1. If my admission letter states that I have been exempted for Econ 201 and/or Econ 203, do I need to take these courses again

at Concordia, and would I receive credits for them?

Ans: No, exemptions mean that you have performed sufficiently well in these courses at certain institutions and you do not have to

take these courses at Concordia. You can take courses that require Econ 201/3 as prerequisites. If you have been granted an

exemption for a course and you retake that course at Concordia, you would receive no credits for it. If you have been exempted for

an econ course, you need to replace the course with another ECON elective. Exemptions yield no credits. Notice that not all

CEGEPs qualify for exemptions. It depends on the content of the economics courses they offer.

2. How do I add an additional component to my program, such as a minor in an area outside of economics?

Ans: Please visit the department that offers your desired minor. Certain minors have minimum GPA requirements.

3. How do I transfer to John Molson School of Business?

Ans: Students who have questions about transferring to JMSB need to contact JMSB for information.

4. If I transfer to another Faculty or Department, would the Economics courses I took be “wasted”?

Ans: It depends – please contact the department or faculty you wish to transfer to.

5. What if I have other questions? Who can I talk to?

Ans: You can drop by the Economics Department in the Hall Building 11th floor. To talk to an Economics adviser, see

http://www.concordia.ca/artsci/economics/students/advising.html#tab1 for their availability. Just drop by during their availability,

no appointment is needed.

Please bring a paper copy of your transcript and/or admission letter when you see an adviser.

Disclaimer: Advisers offer advice only. It is ultimately the student’s responsibility to be familiar with academic regulations and

requirements for their academic programs and requirements.
