Opening Hymn

We sing our opening hymn:

Come to Calvary’s holy mountain,

LHS 71 CAL293

James Montgomery (1771-1854)

Page 11: welcome

Come to Calvary’s holy mountain

1. Come to Calvary’s holy mountain,

Sinners, ruined by the fall;

Here a pure and healing fountain

Flows to you, to me, to all,

In a full perpetual tide,

Opened when our Saviour died.

Page 12: welcome

Come to Calvary’s holy mountain

2. Come in poverty and meanness,

Come defiled, without, within,

From infection and uncleanness,

From the leprosy of sin,

Wash your robes and make them white;

You shall walk with God in light.

Page 13: welcome

Come to Calvary’s holy mountain

3. Come in sorrow and contrition,

Wounded, impotent, and blind;

Here the guilty free remission,

Here the troubled peace may find:

Health this fountain will restore;

He that drinks shall thirst no more.

Page 14: welcome

Come to Calvary’s holy mountain

4. He that drinks shall live for ever;

‘It’s a soul-renewing flood:

God is faithful; God will never

Break His covenant of blood,

Signed when our Redeemer died,

Sealed when He was glorified.

M: The Holy Gospel is written in Chapter fourteen of the Gospel according to St Matthew beginning at verse thirteen.

Matthew 14:13-21

38

Page 39: welcome

 M: 13After Jesus heard about John,

he crossed Lake Galilee to go to some place where he could be alone.

But the crowds found out and followed him on foot from the towns.

39

Page 40: welcome

 14When Jesus got out of the boat, he

saw the large crowd. He felt sorry for them and healed everyone who was sick.

15That evening the disciples came to Jesus and said, "This place is like a desert, and it is already late. Let the crowds leave, so they can go to the villages and buy some food.”

40

Page 41: welcome

 16Jesus replied, "They don't have to

leave. Why don't you give them something to eat?"

17But they said, "We have only five small loaves of bread and two fish.”

41

Page 42: welcome

 18Jesus asked his disciples to bring

the food to him, 19and he told the crowd to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish. He looked up toward heaven and blessed the food. Then he broke the bread and handed it to his disciples, and they gave it to the people.

42

Page 43: welcome

 20After everyone had eaten all they

wanted, Jesus' disciples picked up twelve large baskets of leftovers.

21There were about five thousand men who ate, not counting the women and children.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to you, O Christ.

43

Page 44: welcome

Hymn

We sing :

Speak forth Your Word, O Father,v. 1,2,4

LH269 CAL 293

Charles Jefferies, 1964

Page 80: welcome

80

Speak forth Your Word, O Father

1. Speak forth Your Word, O Father,

Men’s hungry minds to feed:

The people starve and perish,

Unconscious of their need;

For so, Lord, You have made us

That not alone by bread,

But by Your Word of comfort

Our hunger must be fed.

Page 81: welcome

81

Speak forth Your Word, O Father

2. The secrets of the atom,

The universe of light,

All wonders of creation

Proclaim Your boundless might:

But only through the witness

From man to man passed on

Do You reveal in fullness

The gospel of Your Son.

Page 82: welcome

82

Speak forth Your Word, O Father

4. Take us, then, Lord, and use us

Your messengers to be:

Our prayers, our gifts, our service

We offer here to You,

That every man and nation

May learn what we have heard,

And all the minds of millions

Shall feed upon Your Word. †
