A Time of Confession

It seems we cannot decide, Cloud of Glory. We say we will live to serve others, but end up meeting only our needs. We claim to live in a way that honors Christ, but we do not take him to work, school or home. We believe that the gospel can transform lives, (at least, for those who need it - not us). Forgive us, Presence of Peace. Instead of grumblers, make us ambassadors of grace. Instead of continual complaining, make us carry compassion to the hurting. Instead of whiners, make us workers with Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, to reach out and bring the kingdom of God to everyone we meet. Amen.

(a time of silence)

The Assurance of Pardon ~ and all say: Thanks be to God!

*Share the peace of Christ with those around you

From the Cross

O God, you sent your Son to take upon himself our suffering, to teach us your ways, and to bear the penalty of our sin.

We are amazed by the wonder of your grace.

On the cross, Jesus made a way of salvation for all who put their trust in him.

We declare our trust in the one name that saves.

From the cross comes a message of forgiveness and new life for all kinds of people.

Help us who have received this good news not to keep it to ourselves.

We are your church, O God.

May we be your hands and feet in this world.

Many around the world have not yet experienced the fullness of your grace.

May we be your voice in calling others to trust in your Son.

Jesus declared, “You will be my witnesses in Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

To those who have come from distant lands to live among us, help us to give witness to your grace in Jesus.

You called your church, both then and now, to cross national and cultural boundaries to be your witness.

Help us to witness also through those who are sent to people who have never heard the good news, as well as to support the ministries of those giving witness to their own community about Christ.

From the cross, through the church, to the world. . . your grace must flow. Help us to be agents of your mission.

(repeat)

Faith Explorers

This Fall, the Faith Explorers adult Sunday School class that meets in room 207 just off the

Fellowship Hall will be studying the weekly Bible selec-tions of the Lectionary for each Sunday. Classes will start the week of September 15th at 9 AM. In addition to the four lectionary readings from the Bible, we will also study the connection to one of the hymns to be sung in worship each week. We will leave the singing to the choir in worship, but take a look at who wrote the hymn, what occasion prompted the writing, how the music was composed that carries the words of the hymn, and its relationship to the lectionary readings for that Sunday.

The Forum

Adult Sunday School class is excited to be

starting a new program for September. We

will be subscribing to the Wired Word, a

current event Christian discussion program.

We will send out the topic each week for a

quick read ahead and then meet at 9 am

Sunday morning to discuss. Please join us in room 209 for

this interesting discussion of Christian life topics lead by

Rev. Dr. Bill Austin.

Wycliffe Golf Outing

Saturday, October 5th at Broad Bay Country Club.

We anticipate that our tee times will commence about 1:00 (more to follow on that). We would love to have not only men’s groups, but would love to have women players and youth players. Whole families can play as a team or the family members can be spread out among several teams. The format is Captain’s Choice Best Ball, so you don’t have to be good to play – and most of us are not. There will be a pot-luck dinner after the golf for the players, families, and golf fans. More details will follow, but save the date. If we can count on you to play, please notify Dave Carney 270-9979 or [email protected].

~Office Hours~

In observance of Labor Day, the office will be closed

on Monday, September 2nd. The office will resume

its regular office hours after Labor Day.

A reading from Acts 16 vs 6-15

Paul and his friends went through Phrygia and Galatia, but the Holy Spirit would not let them preach in Asia. After they arrived in Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not let them. So they went on through Mysia until they came to Troas.

During the night, Paul had a vision of someone from Macedonia who was standing there and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us!”

*Hymn 726 “The Summons” (sing vs. 1 & 2, see next page)

After Paul had seen the vision, we began looking for a way to go to Macedonia. We were sure that God had called us to preach the good news there. We sailed straight from Troas to Samothrace, and the next day we arrived in Neapolis. From there we went to Philippi, which is a Roman colony in the first district of Macedonia. We spent several days in Philippi. Then on the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to a place by the river, where we thought there would be a Jewish meeting place for prayer. We sat down and talked with the women who came. One of them was Lydia, who was from the city of Thyatira and sold expensive purple cloth. She was a worshiper of the Lord God, and he made her willing to accept what Paul was saying. Then after she and her family were baptized, she kept on begging us, “If you think I really do have faith in the Lord, come stay in my home.” Finally, we accepted her invitation.

* Hymn 726 “The Summons” (sing vs. 3 & 4, see next page) followed by a reflection

A Reading from Paul’s Letter to the Philippians

To all of God’s people who belong to Christ Jesus at Philippi and to all of your church officials and officers. I pray that God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ will be kind to you and will bless you with peace! Every time I think of you, I thank my God. And whenever I mention you in my prayers, it makes me happy. This is because you have taken part with me in spreading the good news from the first day you heard about it. God is the one who began this good work in you, and I am certain that he won’t stop before it is complete on the day that Christ Jesus returns. My friends at Philippi, you remember what it was like when I started preaching the good news in Macedonia. Af-ter I left there, you were the only church that became my partner by giving blessings and by receiving them in re-turn. Even when I was in Thessalonica, you helped me more than once. I am not trying to get something from you, but I want you to receive the blessings that come from giving.

Give my greetings to all who are God’s people because of Christ Jesus. The Lord’s followers here with me send you their greetings. A Reflection followed by

*Hymn 726 “The Summons” (sing vs. 5, see next page)

*Benediction

All are invited to stay in the fellowship hall for Coffee & Conversation.
