HOW THE WHOLE SCHOOL APPROACH DEVELOPED: ORIGINS - FEBRUARY 2012
• ‘The children are not fit.’
• ‘Most children are exhausted by the warm up.’
• test 1 - I took a Year 5 class out to see if they could run round the school field - disaster!
• the children saw the problem clearly for themselves
• test 2 - we agreed that the class would try running round the field for 15 minutes every day for 4 weeks
THE RESULT • all children were fitter with improved stamina
• improved mood, focus and behaviour
• nobody wanted to stop so we kept it going
• in the 15 minutes almost all were averaging a mile.
• the daily 15 minutes was called The Daily Mile
• demand from parents and staff for other classes to do it
• June 2012 - the whole school, and in the autumn, the nursery class
• test 3 - the whole school approach is sustainable

NO CHILD HAS TO RUN A MILE !!
10
75% run a mile or more
90% run a mile or more
IN THE 15 MINUTES THIS IS HOW FAR THEY RUN
THE CORE PRINCIPLES OF THE DAILY MILE
• 100% inclusive - every child every day ages 2 - 12
• it’s social and fun
• health and wellbeing - with access to sport & PE
• not competitive - but some choose to compete
• always a time (15 minutes) never a distance
• children run or jog for 15 minutes (and sometimes walk)
• it happens outdoors in almost all weathers
• it takes place at a time of the teacher’s choosing
• children run in their ordinary school clothes - trainers are ideal but not essential
11
12
BENEFITS FOR CHILDREN
• children develop a habit where they believe that running every day is normal and natural
• fitness comes in 4 weeks, then they get even fitter
• percentage who are overweight / obese is reduced
• improved attainment
• happiness - less anxiety, better mental health
• it builds resilience, self esteem and determination
• develops physical literacy
• children know that they have a healthier body and are more likely to consider their diet and overall health
• it closes the gap between most and least advantaged
SPECIAL NEEDS
• includes children with mobility difficulties
• children with SEN and complex needs take part routinely
• can be used therapeutically e.g. for children with ASD
• asthma, brittle bone disease, cerebral palsy
• socialisation opportunities for children who play alongside and not with others

DOING THINGS DIFFERENTLY: REMOVING THE BARRIERS TO PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
• there is no sense of failure
• no equipment, no set up, no tidy up and no warm up
• weather is a benefit, not a barrier
• risk is easily managed
• staff are confident - no training needed
• no kit needed, therefore:
no cool / uncool kit
no forgetting or losing kit
no time spent changing
no body image issues, or revealing your body
WHY THE WHOLE SCHOOL APPROACH IS TRANSFERABLE
• completely simple to implement and it’s totally free
• a practical H&WB solution, not just a message
• ongoing positive impact on focus and behaviour
• helps schools to raise attainment for all children
• the HWB benefits extend to teachers and other staff
• overwhelming support from parents
• helps to meet the requirements for daily physical activity
• …………
17
……. CONTINUED
• no planning, measurement or assessment is needed
• no workload for teachers or schools
• relationships benefit - the language of friendship
• no complex or expensive structures are needed to support it
• the entire school can take part - it enables industrial quantities of children to be active every day

SOME THINGS TO REMEMBER • 15 minutes daily – but a minimum of 3 days a week
• it works well if teachers choose when to go out
• every child need not run a mile - they do what they can
• encouragement to run or jog as much as possible
• ideally the path will be about 5-12 laps
• the route should be wide enough for 3 or 4 children
• don’t be tempted to over-complicate it
• simple, child-pleasing measurement works well
• it’s free - no kit, equipment or training
• it’s every child, every day - participation is for all
