What is a “Gifted/Talented” student?

No standard definition from any organization– Demonstrate outstanding levels of

aptitude or competence in a domain(<10%) (NAGC)

– Higher performance capability (Javits, ‘88)

– Outstanding Talent (OERI, ‘93)

– Children who, by virtue of outstanding abilities, are capable of high performance.(Marland Report, ‘72)

How else is it defined?

Columbus Group: asynchronous development

Gagné:Giftedness ≠Talent– Talent is hard work. Gifted is magic

Renzulli: 3 ring model– Above average ability– High level of commitment– High level of creativity

Early Gifted funding

Block grants based on five areas (1981)
