The scale of the challenge

• Future climate depends on cumulative emissions of CO2 & other greenhouse gases

• 2oC is “dangerous”

• But avoiding 2oC requires stabilisation at 350ppmv CO2e i.e. below current levels!

• Stabilisation at 550 ppmv CO2e requires global energy and industrial emissions to peak by 2020, then decline at between 6% & 12% per annum

The scale of the challenge

• Any historical precedent?

• Economic collapse of the Soviet Union (5% per annum reduction)

• Current trends?

• 2.8% per annum increase

• Stern assumed 1%
