A Question to Ask God
It’s a terrible thought, Father, but are material assets competing with You for lordship over my life? Has my spiritual life - and my family’s - been harmed by our wealth and our infatuation with wealth? Is it true that giving is the only antidote to materialism? Have I been giving enough to experience a release from materialism and a joyful liberty from the tyranny of money and things?
For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness.

God’s Word - Time With God
This Week’s SOAP - Assurance
Scripture: Genesis 1:27; 9:1-7; Matt. 5:21-22
Observation: Genesis chapter 1 tells us that we were created in the image of God. Genesis chapter 9 tells us that there is a penalty for taking another human life. Matthew chapter 5 tells us what we think and what we say matter much to God.
God gave us the Word of God so that we might come to know the God of the Word. God's word clearly and without apology communicates that life is a gift from God and is to be protected.
Application: On January 13, 1984, President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation designating January 22 as the first National Sanctity of Human Life Day. (January 22, 1973 was the day the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion-on-demand in all 50 states.) Churches around the United States use the day to celebrate God's gift of life, commemorate the many lives lost to abortion, and commit themselves to protecting human life at every stage.
Churches continue to recognize the third Sunday in January as Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. Today is Sanctity of Human Life Sunday.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of life! Please help us to proclaim your Truth to this world. Please help us to be a voice for the voiceless. Please help us to protect the innocent. Please help us to be the hands and feet of Jesus in this sin soaked world filled with rebellion and pain. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Today’s SOAP - Pastor Sam Jay
Scripture - Read the passage of Scripture for the day and allow God to speak to you. Write down a verse which spoke to you.
Observation - Write your observation as to what is happening in the text. What do you believe is the point of the passage?
Application - Write down how the passage applies to your life today.
Prayer - Ask God to help you use this Scripture for greater insight on what He may be revealing to you. Remember, prayer is a two-way conversation, so be sure to listen to what God has to say! Now, write it out.
Main Passage for January 27th - Genesis 35:1-15 CSB
Monday - Genesis 35:1-2 Tuesday - Genesis 35:3-4 Wednesday - Genesis 35:5-7
Thursday - Genesis 35:9-13 Friday - Genesis 35:14-15 Saturday - Exodus 20:1-3
Memory Verse: Genesis 35:11 - “God also said to him, “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation, indeed an
assembly of nations, will come from you, and kings will descend from you.”

*Notes adapted from Explore the Bible, LifeWay Christian Resources. All Scripture passages from the Christian Standard Bible.
God created humanity in His image, giving human life sacred value.
27 So God created man in his own image; he created him in the image of God; he created them
male and female.
1 God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.
2 The fear and terror of you will be in every living creature on the earth, every bird of the sky, every
creature that crawls on the ground, and all the fish of the sea. They are placed under your authority.
3 Every creature that lives and moves will be food for you; as I gave the green plants, I have given
you everything.
4 However, you must not eat meat with its lifeblood in it.
5 And I will require a penalty for your lifeblood; I will require it from any animal and from any human;
if someone murders a fellow human, I will require that person’s life.
6 Whoever sheds human blood, by humans his blood will be shed, for God made humans in his image.
7 But you, be fruitful and multiply; spread out over the earth and multiply on it.”
21 You have heard that it was said to our ancestors, Do not murder, and whoever murders will be
subject to judgment.
22 But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother or sister will be subject to judgment.
Whoever insults his brother or sister, will be subject to the court. Whoever says, ‘You fool!’
will be subject to hellfire.
Genesis 1:27; 9:1-7; Matt. 5:21-22 CSB

God’s Word - Devoted to Him
God Sees All Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite. Psalms 147:5 Some years ago a friend of mine was standing on top of a mountain in North Carolina. The roads in those days were filled with curves, and it was difficult to see very far ahead. This man saw two cars heading toward each other. He realized they couldn’t see each other. A third car pulled up and began to pass one of the cars, although there wasn’t enough space to see the other car approaching around the bend. My friend shouted a warning, but the drivers couldn’t hear, and there was a fatal crash. This is how God looks upon us in His omniscience. He sees what has happened, what is happening, and what will happen. He also sees us when we foolishly think we can get away with breaking His moral laws or when we act out of sinful pride or lust or anger. Like the man on that mountain, He shouts His warnings at us—but we are too busy or too stubborn to listen. God sees the whole picture. He knows what is best for us, and He knows what will destroy us. Don’t think your way is better than His, but listen to His Word—and obey. From Hope for Each Day

"Stop being so nice."
Why would someone say this? There can actually be a difference between being "nice" and being "kind."
For a full discussion about this go to
https://fervr.net and search "stop being
so nice." An article will pop up that
discusses the difference. In short,
"nice" is not always authentic. "Nice"
worries too much about offending
people. We will not be true to who
we are or to who God is if all we are
concerned with is being nice.
"Kind" on the other hand is truthful,
but tactful. It is not afraid of what
people think. It will not be mean, but
it also won't be fake. God wants us to
show love and kindness, not a fake
"niceness." Check out the article
above to read more about this!

Today we are studying Luke 4:14-21,
when Jesus teaches in a synagogue about the
promised Messiah.
Today’s Key Verse: “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.” Luke 19:10
“Partnering with Parents”
Work together for a few minutes to
write out a family mission statement
that describes who you are and the
values you hold as a family. Now,
read Luke 4:14-21 and discuss what
Jesus proclaimed his mission to be.
How are the statements similar? How
could you adjust your family mission
statement to be more like Jesus’?
Next week’s lesson: Jesus is Rejected in His Hometown - Luke 4:22-30
Key Verse: “Love the Lord your God will all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” Deuteronomy 6:5
