incoming 9th grade students • Heard information about the academic programs and

courses available to students at Richard Montgomery High School

• Reviewed the course registration timeline and on-line registration process

• Navigated the RMHS website to locate resources to support the registration process & visited the on-line scheduling site

MCPS Promotion Policy:

The present promotion policy for high school students states that students must earn 5 credits to be promoted to the 10th Grade.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS & INFORMATION

Academic Information• For the 2015-2016 school year, Julius West

Middle School staff have submitted course recommendations for the class of 2019.

• Richard Montgomery High School offers a diverse array of leveled academic courses (on-level, honors, Advanced Placement, IB, etc.)

• Richard Montgomery High School, like Julius West Middle School, implements a whole school Middle Years Programme (MYP) model for ninth and tenth grade students.

Academic Information• Students are expected to participate as fully as

possible in the MYP by:– Continuing to take a second language (Spanish,

French or Chinese)– Completing a personal project in grade 10– Taking a range of courses in which they are

interested at a level appropriate to their skills and interests

• Students will have access to MYP instructional models in all classes, regardless of level.

• Honors courses are available to all students during grades 9-12.– Courses are available in all content areas

• Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses are available to all students grades 10-12.

Honors & Advanced Placement Courses

Access to the IB MagnetEighth Grade:• Students who applied to enter into the county-wide magnet

program must complete the regular Julius West Middle School registration process.

Tenth Grade:• Students enrolled in RMHS may apply to enter the IB

Diploma Programme for their 11th grade year. • A parent meeting held in December of the sophomore year

Student Support

• Academically at-risk students who need additional support may qualify for placement in our Alternative 1 and intervention programs where they will receive daily academic support.

• Special Education Teachers at Richard Montgomery High School will collaborate with staff at Julius West Middle School in regards to students with Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) in order to ensure a smooth transition.

Registration Timeline• Wednesday, January 21, 2015

JWMS Counselors presented four year high school planning to Grade 8 students.

• Week of January 21, 2015Grade 8 students were in JWMS computer labs completing their four year plans.

• Monday, January 26, 2015–RMHS Counselors visit JWMS to distribute registration materials and explain the on-line registration process .–Incoming 9th Grade Course Registration Meeting for parents held at RMHS.

• Thursday, January 29, 2015 Grade 8 students in JWMS computer labs to complete course registration with the assistance of RMHS and JWMS counselors.

• Friday, January 30, 2015Registration completed with a make-up session for any Grade 8 students absent on 1/29/15.

Transition Activities • Additional information regarding the 8th to 9th grade

transition will be shared with parents and posted on the Richard Montgomery High School website throughout the remainder of the school year.

• Principal’s Coffee for incoming ninth grade parents in May 2015

• Student Orientation in Friday, June 12, 2015 (last day of school)

• Back to School Barbeque in August • Expect food, fun, & to learn about student life at RMHS
