Welcome to the 2015 golden Onion Days Celebration! I am proud to call Payson my home and I am honored to represent this great city as its mayor. Payson has a rich pioneer history and we cherish the traditions established by the many generations of people who have called Payson home.
This year we are excited to have a new float that represents the Nebo Scenic Byway. The theme this year is “amazing adventures await.” I challenge each of you to get outside and explore our beautiful surroundings. There are a variety of entertaining and fun-filled events planned throughout this year’s celebration. I know you will have an amazing adventure while celebrating during our golden Onion Days.
We are also deeply grateful for the financial support provided by the many generous sponsors who have stepped forward to ensure the success of the celebration.
Sincerely,
Rick Moore, MayorPayson, Utah

Payson City’s annual golden Onion Days celebration will mark it’s 86th anniversary this year! This widely enjoyed tradition began back in 1929, started by the city’s mayor, L.D. Stewart. The following is the official declaration as it appeared in the Payson Chronicle:
pRoCLaMaTIon
Whereas many former residents of Payson City feel and have expressed a desire to come back to Payson and bring their friends with them for the purpose of meeting old friends and forming new friendships; and,
Whereas an organization has been perfected and a time appointed with the object of making it possible for all finding it convenient to meet here on the appointed time; and
Whereas September 12th, 13th, and 14th, 1929 is the appointed time and the occasion has been designated as “ONION HARVEST AND HOME COMING” celebration; and,
Whereas the citizens of Payson City are putting forth much effort to make this occasion a success and it is apparent that much good may come to Payson City and the inhabitants thereof and the friends who reside elsewhere, in making Payson and vicinity popular as an agriculture district and outstanding in the production of the onion.
Now therefore, I, L.D. Stewart, Mayor of Payson City, Utah do hereby proclaim September 12, 13, and 14, 1929, as the time for the first celebration known as “ONION HARVEST AND HOME COMING” and I urge all citizens to aid in every possible way to patronize and popularize this event.
I do further urge that all businesses, homes, and schools be closed Friday the 13th, and that all unite in making the parade an outstanding success.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the corporate seal of Payson City, Utah, to be affixed this 6th day of September, 1929.
L.D. STEWART, Mayor of Payson City Source: Payson Chronicle, 1929 (http://www.paysonads.com/)
The celebration, later renamed “Payson City golden Onion Days,” was officially acknowledged by the Utah State governor, Henry H. Blood, in 1933. He wrote: “Greetings to the celebrants at Payson this year. Your festivities are three-fold. You honor the onion as typical of the great agricultural resources of Payson and vicinity. You honor labor on the day set apart by the nation as labor’s holiday. In paying tribute to the farmer and the working man you recognize basic factors in civilization. Also you honor the old home town, in an outburst of emotion which springs from the heart of human life. Thus I trebly congratulate you, and hope this celebration will bring you much joy and lasting happiness.”
For over 85 years now, this wonderful city celebration has provided events which have delighted its citizens and kept them coming back each year for more! We invite you to enjoy this year’s golden Onion Days!

the place to be forsummer fun!A number of exciting play features make the Payson City Aquatics Center a popular destination for children and their families. The slide tower features a twisty slide and speed flume, while the “lazy river” that encircles the tower provides an exciting way to relax or splash around, passing beneath dumping buckets and a bridge with spray features. The zero-entry splash area features three waterslides and other great spray features for smaller kids. A six-lane competition pool is separated from the leisure pool to maintain a manageable division of the “fun” and “business” sides of the facility.
To attract a different segment of the community, the park also includes an impressive skate park, designed with in-depth input from serious skate enthusiasts.

peteetneet museum & cultural arts center
This year, the center is celebrating 114 years of culture! Established in 1901, the actual building began in 1897 as a solution to replace four, one-room schools existing at that time. It has served for many years as a school and educational venue. In 1988, the school was restored and turned into a cultural center and museum offering plenty of ongoing activies and instruction to the community.
Today, the Historic Peteetneet Museum and Cultural Arts Center represents an ongoing act of love expressed by the community to all visitors. Not only is it the restoration and preservation of a beautiful historic school building, but it is a gathering place for children and adults who want to enjoy the facility and what it has to offer. During 2012, volunteers donated almost 12,000 hours of their time to share Peteetneet with the many visitors to the facility. The museum and cultural arts center was host to over 34,000 visitors during the same year.

grand marshal Marion Manwill
Marion Manwill has lived in Payson since 1969. He taught Vocational agriculture at Payson High School for 21 years, working with the students and their animals, taking them to the Spanish Fork livestock show each year as well as the State Fair and other livestock shows throughout the state.
Marion was recently given an award by the Utah State Jr. Livestock Show for his many years of distinguished service in working with the youth. He was also was recognized by a national organization and featured in a book by Norman Vincent Peale, “The american Character”, for teaching his students about being neighborly.
The national FFa had a program called BOaC (Building our american Community) for which Marion was the Payson chapter president. The chapter won first place in the state, and went to nationals in Kansas City, MO where they placed 2nd in the nation.
Marion was also president of the People Preserving Peteetneet for two years and served on the board of directors for many more years. While acting as president, Marion was recognized for working with the National Forest Service in volunteering his time to help construct the information kiosk’s that are placed on the Se corner of Peteetneet, and two more up Payson canyon. He also organized a band called the Peteetneet Creek Ranch Hands, where they performed two shows a year at the Peteetneet, donating the proceeds to the elevator fund for the Peteetneet Museum.
active in community development, Marion designed and built the amphitheater stage with the help of Reed Money, Blair andreason, Scott Phillips, and many others. This was a great addition to our town to allow people to share their talents with everyone. He was also instrumental in helping to organize the Cowboy Poets of Utah where he served as Vice President for many years. In 2009, Marion was given the Pioneer Heritage award by the Cowboy Poets of Utah, for living the
life, dreaming the dreams, and telling the stories of Utah’s pioneer cowboys.
Marion has written several books, a short story, a novel, a book on “How to Shoe a Horse,” and a poetry book. He has traveled all over the state performing his
cowboy poetry, and is currently the Chaplin for the Cowboy Poets of Utah.
Marion is a veteran having served in the Navy for four years during the Korean War, as an aircraft mechanic, stationed in the Martial Islands. But if you ask
him, his greatest service has been as a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and enjoying the blessings of family and friends.

• appreciation to all those who made this possible, thanK yoU!
Thank you to everyone who invested time, money, and heart in making this year’s
golden Onion Days a success.
Payson City has many wonderful events that require the efforts of volunteers to make them
a success. It takes a lot of hard work, time, and personal sacrifice to make every event
possible. We are very grateful for all the hard work and time spent by so many.
Volunteers from across our city, including our elected leaders and city staff, have pulled
together to truly make this community-wide celebration a success. Thank you also to our
sponsors for their financial support without which none of this could be possible.
If you would like to be a sponsor for next year’s event(s) please call Janeen Dean,
at (801) 358-3357.
