It feels like it was just yesterday
I was writing the introduction for
our second annual Welcome
Home, RGV Directory and here I
am writing one for our third
edition! The past year has flown
by and we are so excited to
launch our third edition and we
hope you will find this directory
useful as you plan your activities
across the Rio Grande Valley.
We know that you have choices when it comes to
your retirement destination, and we are thrilled that
you have chosen the Rio Grande Valley as yours.
From South Padre Island to Rio Grande City with all
points in between, each one of our cities are so very
different from the other – and I would like to
encourage you to experience them all!
As a McAllen native myself, I speak from the heart
and from first-hand experience that the Valley has
so much to offer, such as affordable living, great
weather, opportunities for involvement, outdoor
excursions, the arts, cultural activities and an
endless variety of shopping and dining.

Bob and Jackie are from Kansas City,Missouri where both of them workedfor Trans World and American Airlines.They found their way to the Rio GrandeValley fifteen years ago to visit theirson, a Master Martial Artist, whoresides in the Mission area. Although Boband Jackie return to Kansas City each year, where their twodaughters and three grand-children live, the fun and theirRGV friends bring them back every fall.

Start at the parking lot andfollow the winding trail through the park. This routeis approximately 4 miles.
• Bicycle World Parking Lot. Exit parking lot goingnorth on Business 77 Sunshine Strip, turn east
on Tyler St. towards Ed Carey Drive, continue easton 106 to Rio Hondo. Ride through town andstop at Stripes at the corner of FM 106 andFM345 and turn around back to the BicycleWorld Parking Lot. Route is approximately 20miles.
• Loop 499 (Bike Lane). Bike lane begins on thecorner of FM 507 and Loop 499 (corner of TSTCand Morgan Blvd.). Go north until the intersection ofNorth Expressway 77 and then turn around backto the beginning. This route is approximately 6miles.
• Harlingen Soccer Complex. 4515 E. Harrison Ave.Exit parking lot and go east on Tyler/HarrisonAvenue. Turn north on FM 509 (Paso Real) andcontinue to FM 508. On FM 508 head west andlook for Country Store at intersection of FM 508and FM 507. Turn north on FM 507 and continueon to FM 1018. At 1018 head west towardsfrontage road and continue north to FM 498.Turneast from frontage road on to FM 498 to SantaMonica (FM 1420). Then turn south on FM 1420until you reach FM 508. At FM 508 head south toFM 106. FM 508 and FM 506 will merge andcontinue south which will take you back to thesoccer complex. This route is approximately 50miles.

• Linear Parkway. Paved, multi-use trail whichstarts at 6th & 7th Streets in front of FederalCourthouse, continues north to Palo Alto Park, 9miles one-way.
• Resaca De La Palma State Birding Center. Trailbegins on West 1421, 3 1/2 mile paved loop withdirt trails. Tram and bike rentals are available.

the World Birding Center 5-mile Hike and BikeTrail, which includes Asphalt-Covered Trial, 2Bridges, and parking lot for up to 30 vehicles.
• Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park. 2800 S.Bentsen Palm Drive (FM 2062), 4 nature trailsranging in length from ¼ mile to 2 miles. Bikerentals (1 and 2 seat bikes) are available.
Rio Hondo• Laguna Atascosa Refuge. Bicycles are permitted
on tour roads and some service roads. Serviceroads are primitive routes where riders should beprepared for emergencies. Check with Refuge stafffor approved routes and trail maps. Bring plenty ofwater and sun protection, patch kits to repair a flat,and be prepared to walk several miles if your bikebreaks down. Off-road riding is prohibited.
