On Level
• Give the most class time for working on assignments
• Provide more review time in class
• Provide more time for questions and answers on assignments
• Move at a slower pace
Pre-AP and AP • Pre-AP classes require
more time reading and working at home
• Pre-AP classes are preparing students for AP coursework so the class environment is similar to an AP class
• AP courses are College Board curriculum courses (college level)
• AP courses have an optional test at the end of the course for possible college credit
Successful PreAP and AP students are typically…
• Task oriented
• Proficient readers – have accurate/timely recall, are able to make inferences from what has been read
• Able to set priorities with regard to time and responsibilities
• Parental support
• Willing to commit the time and effort necessary to meet the more rigorous course requirements
AP Class Available to Freshmen
This course is designed to be an introductory computer science class using
the Java programming language. It is roughly equivalent to the first semester programming class at college. The skills developed in this course
can be used across a broad range of disciplines including medicine, business, scientific research, engineering, music, and film making.
AP Computer Science A Concurrent enrollment in Algebra II or higher
AP Computer Science Principles Concurrent enrollment in Algebra II or higher & Pre-AP English
This course will introduce students to the central ideas of computer
science, instilling the ideas and practices of computational thinking and
inviting students to understand how computing changes the world. The
course focuses on using technology as a means to address real-world
problems and create personally relevant solutions.
Please help your child make thoughtful decisions regarding their course selections, whether they are choosing on-level, Pre-AP, or AP classes. They will be expected to maintain enrollment in the classes they choose throughout the year – including electives!
Top 5 Enrollment Questions
5. What are the benefits and challenges of taking a 1- 7 schedule?
Benefits Challenges
If your student is in Band and a sport and
needs a world language, a 1 – 7 can make
that happen.
Also, if a student is interested in taking
concurrent classes their senior year, it is
beneficial to have 19 units of credit at the
end of their junior year.
It is also beneficial to students who want to
go to a Francis Tuttle academy their
sophomore year.
There are limited numbers of classes to take
in the 7th hour besides sports.
Students must have their own transportation
home.
Also, guided study is currently only offered
in the 7th hour, so they can not access that
free tutoring if they have a non-sport course
in 7th hour.
4. What is the difference between an on-level class and a Pre-AP class?
Math – covers more curriculum, goes faster,
less time for questions, more homework, tests require higher level thinking/logic.
Soc. Studies/Sci/English – more individual reading and writing, more outside work, higher level thinking skills used for daily work as well as tests, more complex test
questions and assignments
3. If my student doesn’t take a Pre-AP class his/her 9th grade year, can he/she still take a Pre AP or AP course
in that subject his/her 10th grade year?
Yes!! However, Pre-AP classes will teach you the strategies
and skills that will be used in AP courses so they can be very helpful!
2. If my student starts the year in an on-level class, can he/she move up to Pre AP during the
school year or vice versa?
No, because all courses are staffed based on student requests, signing up for levels and courses will require a year-long commitment to the requested level and courses.
1. Why is it important to have alternates for the electives my student wants?
Most electives are not taught every hour. Even required classes are not taught every hour, so conflicts with electives may occur and alternates are needed in those cases.
If family income
is less than
$55,000 at the
time of
application, the
student is eligible
for free college
tuition.
Applications must
be received by the
end of the 10th
grade school year!
