BIO-BASED PRODUCTS IN A NUTSHELL

Bio-based products are products which componants (molecules,

monomeres, …) are partially or totally coming from biomass.

The bio-based content can be described according to the standard EN 16785

(Cf. CEN TC411 Bio-based Products standardization).

The possibilities of raw materials sourcing are broad which convey

a real potential of innovation.

We find bio-based products in various final applications for the specific functions they bring to the formula, either technical,

economical, social or environmental.

Eco-formulated, we emphasize a production with local and renewable raw materials.Thanks to a strong R&D team and reliable partnerships with research laboratories, our company developed the first paint produced with algae. ALGO is patented.

The benefits of our innovation:

Healthy paint for healthy habitat. The range ALGO releases less than 1g/liter of VOCs (volatile organic compounds). The European Ecolabel certification, the Life Cycle Assessment of the product (FDES) along with the labelling A+ guarantee the real innovation and features of ALGO.

ALGO® distinguishes itself from traditional paints. Indeed, traditional water-borne paints contain until 65% of substances derivatives of petroleum. Our eco-formulated paint eschews fossil energy linked to petroleum in favor of plant chemistry, giving thus added value to algae from our coasts.

A circular economy scheme: we contribute to local economy, employment and local dynamism through the incorporation of local and renewable raw materials.

Incorporate algae into our paint present many properties and benefits.

Algae are not invasive and have positive impact on the biotope because they sequestrate CO2 and release oxygen.

We also developed packaging made out of recycled raw materials.

Rilsan® Clear Rnew® is a polyvalent plastic, which offers the best combination of key properties such as incredible lightness, one of the highest levels of transparency, very good chemical resistance, ease of processability and above all, it is the most biobased material of all transparent plastics existing on the market.

Pebax® is a material combining polyamide and polyether. By replacing polyamide 12 from fossil resources by polyamide 11 made from the castor plant, Arkema has obtained the first thermoplastic elastomer made from renewable resources. With 20 to 95% of renewable carbon resources, the Pebax® Rnew® range is environmentally-friendly and offers to the most demanding athletes comfort, lightness, lifetime and extreme performance.

PUMA uses this technology in their evoPOWER and evoSPEED soccer shoes giving them all the performance needed for optimal reactivity. During the European Cup 2016, Antoine Griezmann was wearing the shoes when he named best kicker with 6 goals.

Pebax® Rnew® is the first range of thermoplastic elastomers to be made from renewable resources, castor oil. Pebax® Rnew® leads to lower CO2 emissions and less energy consumption.

With its polyether blocks for flexibility and impact resistance and its bio-based polyamide 11 for mechanical properties, Pebax® Rnew® satisfies the requirements of even the most demanding sportsmen. The ski boots made from this environmentally-friendly material allows more precise and efficient control of movements and this, without loss of performances at temperature as extreme as -40°C.

This high performance material is well known for its unique combination of lightweight, flexibility, energy return and exceptional reliability. Depending on the model, it can be used in the shell, cuff and tongue of the ski boot.

Fruit and vegetable bags and shopping bags made of biodegradable partially biobased polymer by BASF, 35% biobased.

The benefits of our innovation:

The multiple uses of ecovio® compostable bags, for shopping and collecting food waste, offer many environmental/ecological benefits.

ecovio® compostable bags help consumers to ensure cleaner and safer selective collection of food waste. Consequently, the volume of collected organic waste separately increases.

This increasing volume, coupled with better public acceptance and better collection rate of food waste, results in a reduction of the ecological footprint.

The recycling of organic wastes is more resource efficient than landfilling or incineration.

Compostable shopping bags offer a reduced carbon footprint, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions and fights against climate changes by:

- integration into the natural carbon cycle through the use of renewable raw materials

- carbon sequestration through composting.

In France, regulations prohibit disposable plastic bags for single use since July 1, 2016.

Magic eraser with 100% of the fossil feedstock required for the manufacturing of this product replaced in the production site by renewable raw materials with the “Biomass Balance Approach”.

We provide ours customers (and their customers) with the highest standard of biomass feedstock sustainability and CO² savings. Our biomass feedstock is partially based on waste, e.g. kitchen waste and agricultural waste. The feedstock must be certified and compliant with the RED (Renewable Energy Directive of the EU).

Protection of areas with high biodiversity and land with high carbon stocks. We ensure social and environmental production of the biomass.

In a context of consumer’s increasing demands for natural cosmetic products, Chimex is committed to the development and industrialization of cosmetic ingredients of renewable origin, sustainabily sourced.

The quinoa husk extract is emblematic of this strategy: originating from a natural co-product, the quinoa husk (the seed’s envelope), it comes from a sustainable sourcing involving the entire value chain.

Quinoa husk contains saponins, a surfactant well known in nature, and which after extraction has foaming and dermo-cosmetic properties. Quinoa is a plant originating in the Andean region, and the husk of quinoa real of Bolivia has been identified as one of the richest in saponins.

In order to guarantee a sustainable supply of this raw material, Chimex has committed with the Bolivian Foundation ProInpa, and its suppliers, to support and deploy a program to accompany the farmers. This program contributes to providing answers to the main social and environmental issues identified by an independent third party: combating soil erosion, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and knowledge transfer, and aims at beneffiting to 250 farmers on the Bolivian altiplano.

The quinoa husk extract is an emblematic ingredient of the Chimex strategy, which aims to offer its customers ingredients combining raw materials of renewable origin, sustainable sourcing, and obtention by a process of green chemistry.

Fine chemicals with extensive catalytic efficiency

Synthetic elastomers have a direct effect on the performance of a tire: Rolling resistance, grip, longevity, etc.

One of the base molecules for synthetic elastomers is butadiene, from the petrochemical sector and a non-renewable component of fossil origin.

On a partnership basis, Michelin is exploring new avenues to produce it from renewable sources and no longer from fossil substances

Passion Céréales, an information group in the cereals sector, presents a multitude of everyday products produced from starch (wheat and corn).

The production cycle for these products begins in the field with cereal crops – renewable, plant-based raw materials. These crops have been chosen especially for their high starch content, which acts as an energy reserve for plants. By crushing, kneading and sieving these crops, we can extract the starch and use it for various applications, including bioplastics. As well as being environmentally-friendly, these bioproducts encourage the local development of crops, create employment and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

Some examples of products made from bioplastics:

Single-use bags, whose decomposition rate is reduced from 400 years (fossil-fuel plastics) to 1-3 months if plant-based!

Cups, lids, and even golf tees, which cause less pollution if they are accidently lost outdoors.

Fully-digestible dog bones for our canine friends!

Q-tips: which won’t obstruct the grills of water-treatment plants if they end up in the water.

Biodegradable mulch film, which cuts farming costs related to collection and cleaning.

The new RIPOLIN bio based resin paint, recommended by AFPRAL, is specially designed for children’s rooms.

The air in the house is 5 to 10 times more polluted than the one outside. Many decorative products (paints, textiles, etc.) and furnishings contain various chemicals that release VOCs, volatile organic compounds that are often toxic, such as formaldehyde.

The benefits of our innovation:

With its expertise, the RIPOLIN laboratory has developed a special painting for children to preserve your health and your environment.

A resin-bio based paint for better environmental protection. Based on a renewable binder, this paint does not use oil-based resin and thus helps to preserve the resources of our planet. The use of a sourced vegetable binder also makes it possible to significantly reduce VOC emissions in the air.

A paint that reduces the risk of allergies. AFPRAL, French association for the prevention of allergy risks, recommends this product to reduce the risk of respiratory allergies.

A paint that captures formaldehyde. To ensure a cleaner air inside, our paint captures up to 80%* of formaldehyde per hour in the room and for a 6-year action.

A painting where performances are preserved. To ensure a high level of performance, the RIPOLIN Children’s room is certified by ECOLABEL certification AFNOR.

* According to a 2006 study of the Indoor Air Quality Observatory, there is on average 20μ/m3 of formaldehyde in one room. Rhodapex® ESB-70 NAT is a 2-EO sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) that is made from 100% renewable carbon. Absolutely no carbon from petrochemical origin is used in its production.

Majority of SLES used in cleansing products are made from plant-derived lauryl alcohol but with ethylene oxide from petroleum. The ethylene oxide used in Rhodapex® ESB-70 NAT comes from sugar cane making all of its carbon content renewable.

ALFAPAC VEGETAL ORIGIN® is a range of garbage bin liners, deep-freeze bags and stretch film made from a renewable raw material, sugar cane.

It is a range that allows a significant reduction in CO2 emissions compared with oil-based products. A life-cycle analysis conducted by PWC Ecobilan has evidenced reductions in CO2 emissions as high as 95%.

About manufacturing with sugar cane-based vegetal plastic:

Thanks to its heavy foliage, sugar cane captures enough CO2 when growing to compensate for all the CO2 emitted during the manufacturing process, transportation, product use and end-of-life cycle.

Most sugar cane earmarked for the production of ethanol is grown in the regions of southern and central Brazil, usually on former degraded pastureland. The sugar cane crops used for the manufacture of vegetal polyethylene have no impact on native forests.

The mechanical properties of vegetal polyethylene are strictly identical those of fossil-sourced plastic.

The first Nespresso-compatible coffee capsule made with BIOPLAST 900 which contains 69% of biosourced materials.

BIO-BASED SURFACTANTS IN DETERGENCE AND PERSONAL CARE

Lauryl lactyl Lactate is a surfactant originating from 100 % natural source. Corn is used to make lactic acid which is reacted with lauryl alcohol to produce this surfactant. It is readily biodegradable.

The molecule is unique and has multifunctional properties as a viscosity builder, foam booster and powerful emulsifier and solubilizer for active substances (salicylic acid and triclosan). It is used to formulate cosmetic products including leave-on creams and conditioning shampoos.

Rapeseed > Fatty acid > Stepantex EUG (surfactant) > Fabric Softeners or Hair Conditioners

Fabric conditioning is an important consumer need for textiles. As it is a wide dispersive high volume application, we believe that it is important to provide a plant-based solution.

Thus, Stepantex EUG is an ester quat based on rapeseed. It is from a local source and is an alternative to Palm oil. Stepantex EUG is readily biodegradable and is mild for the environment and human use as proven by its non-classification under GHS regulatory rules.
