• The bakufu = Japan’s system of government during the Tokugawa period, based on a military leader, the Shogun
• Baku-han = the division of power between Japan’s national leader, the Shogun, and leaders of regions or han, the Daimyo
• Daimyo = feudal lord. He ruled a region or han of Japan
• Alternate attendance: the system of compulsory residence by the daimyo in Edo during alternate years.
Terminology

• Samurai had status but lacked a clear role
