Lots of water for lots of holiday
One of the most beautiful landscapes is a great pre-requisite for relaxing. And for a proper summer
holiday you have to have water - for swimming, splashing around, surfing, sailing or having a ride on a
boat and, and, and … In the Chiemsee-Alpenland there is not only one of the biggest lakes in Germany
but also forest and mountain lakes, rivers, streams and waterfalls. Don‘t forget our lovely open air
swimming pools. There is a great variety and diversity for recreation on or in the water on offer.

You should definitely try this. Take a boat out onto the lake very early in the morning and
enjoy the silence. When the sun rises, nature begins to wake up. Each day is very special,
every sunrise is different. As a fisherwoman a good catch is naturally an essential part of it
for me. Then it has to be smoked, fried in the pan or cooked in a pot as quickly as possible.
Fish always tastes best this way! Even as a child I went out with my dad on the lake. Back
then it was already obvious that I would become a fisherwoman like my son-in-law later
and now my grandchildren.

The Herreninsel with the King Ludwig II’s
palace and the Fraueninsel with the old
Monastery of the Benedictine nuns and the
picturesque fishing village are always worth
a trip. Let yourself be taken back to times
gone by by visiting the Carolingian gateway
hall, the oldest building on the Fraueninsel
from 782 A.D. No less touching is the
roman cathedral where you can find the
tomb of the beatified Irmingard, an early
abbess of the Frauenchiemsee monastery
and patron saint of the Chiemgau. The
monastery‘s garden and the marzipan
in the monastery‘s shop are widely
famous, a „must“ for connoisseurs. If you
fancy absorbing a little bit of history the
Chiemsee boat trips will take you there. Or

and dance away a waltz on the waves.
Whoever wants to experience something
leisurely, old fashioned can go across on
the Inn ferry. The wooden ferry between
Kiefersfelden and Ebbs is dragged along by
a long high-wire over the 115 metre wide
river. There used to a lot of these types of
ferries but nowadays they are rare. Beautiful
views of the river and the mountains can
be seen from the Inn boat trip between
Oberaudorf and Kiefersfelden. Further
down the Inn, the Inn boat trip offers
spectacular views of Wasserburg of the old
trading town. The bow of the Inn embraces
the old town with its colourful house fronts
as it is on a peninsula which can be well
seen especially from the boat.

The last ice age is a really long time ago, but the Chiemsee-
Alpenland, the Eggstätt-Hemhofer Seenplatte can thank the
ice age for the largest and oldest national park (conservation
area) in the Chiemsee-Alpenland. 18 lakes, which are north of
the Chiemsee, belong to it. With the retreat of the glaciers huge
blocks of ice were left which later melted. At these points hollows
were formed, and were filled with ground water and became the
lowland plain full of lakes. Today in the national park, providing
you show a little bit of consideration for the environment, you can
go for wonderful bike rides, go hiking, swimming, bird watching
and admire the water lilies.
Alongside the many lakes in the foothills of the Alps, the Inn and
Mangfall rivers shape the Chiemsee-Alpenland. On the sailor‘s
trail in Neubeuern and in the Inn Museum in Rosenheim you can
see how important the Inn was and is for the region The Inn as a
shipping route brought work, goods and not least growth to the
region. Also the many mills on the streams brought development,
which can be seen along the mills trail in Nußdorf, which shows
how hydropower and engineering history belong together.
The waterfalls let you feel and experience the force of water
directly. Children also love this natural spectacle. In the Chiemsee-
Alpenland you can find the Tatzlwurm waterfall nr. Oberaudorf,
where legend has it, a fire-spewing dragon used to live.
For all of those who like to view the water from further away we
still have a good idea: take a bike ride along the lake and riverside
or along the Inn embankment. It‘s flat and leisurely with lovely
views of the mountains, meadows scattered with fruit trees and
even villages adorned with flowers. And a hearty snack in the beer
garden along the way with Bavarian specialities and a cool large
beer never do any harm.
FIRE AND ICEExciting wonders of nature are everywhere in the Chiemsee-Alpenland. You can enjoy the beauty or
find out more about the significance of water for the region.

For me there is nothing more beautiful than being on the move in the Chiemsee-
Alpenland. The early morning sunrise on a summit, nature‘s magical moments: the
mountains are always a dream for me. If you climb up a lovely route, well-equipped, going
through gorges and hiking over meadows and then when you reach the top a hearty
snack at a mountain hut, then this is pure relaxation and what’s more, a real pleasure.

NATURALLYA healthy holiday in a healthy region is, of course, a natural combination in the
Chiemsee-Alpenland.
An important prerequisite for a successful holiday in our
region is nature. Clearly a conscious and considerate
interaction with nature is compulsory. And thus it comes as
no surprise that we have national parks and nature reserves
such Irlhamer Moor nr. Wasserburg or the Kupferbach valley
nr. Feldkirchen-Westerham. Numerous interesting nature trails
in the Chiemsee-Alpenland will acquaint you with our region
and its exceptional qualities from Auwald nr. Bruckmühl to
the Samerberger felts.
Moorland in the Chiemsee-Alpenland is not only beautiful
and interesting but also important for your health. For more
than 160 years the proved healing power of the „black gold“
from Bad Aibling has been used successfully medically and
developed even further. A mud bath improves the body‘s
defences and activates the self-healing of the body.
Moor is healthy healing power from the earth. It helps to ease
inflammation, aches and pains and revitalises the muscles. In
Bad Feilnbach they have been treating people successfully
with mud baths for years. Anyway the health competence is
very good in the Chiemsee-Alpenland so you can get back to
health, improve your health or fully recuperate quickly.

GENTLE ACTION
Don‘t overdo it is your motto with sport? You‘re right!
Do you actually know what cycling for
pleasure is? No? Then try it out for yourself
here. Relaxing cycling along the flats, along
the Inn dyke or along the lakeside shores.
The beautiful landscape of the foothills of
the Alps is best suited for a bike tour which
helps to improve your fitness without
overdoing things. Especially if you make a
detour to the picturesque villages. You have
to visit a very romantic chapel and take a
short break in a tranquil beer garden.
Even ramblers get their money‘s worth.
Whoever feels like it can combine moving
their body with something for the brain.
Very different theme trails are waiting for
you with interesting information about
the artists’ colony in Brannenburg or the

For the Heart and all your senses
I feel at home in a range of different things but above all in culture and especially in music.
The Inntal has been home or a second home for many literary figures and other artists
since the 19th century which makes the region special for me. This is especially true for
music which belongs to this scenery and is part of our tradition.

If you think of Upper Bavaria then you quickly see in your mind‘s eye traditional maids’ dresses and

all belongs to daily life in the Chiemsee-Alpenland - but that‘s not all. We can‘t list all the things, music,
theatre and art on offer, but also tradition and lots more. We can only recommend one thing: visit us for

it is well-known that nuns and monks had a special

for their heavenly job. you can be sure that it‘s
worthwhile visiting one of the monasteries in our

This is what summer feels like in Chiemsee-Alpenland - for example in Rosenheim.
soutHeRn ZEST FOR LIFEItaly isn‘t far away. You can feel this in our lively towns and villages.
An infectious zest for life begins to spread when the
restaurants, pizzerias and the famous Bavarian beer
gardens entice you to sit outside. A hearty meal and
a beer, a glass of wine and some pasta or to round off
a successful holiday a colourful cocktail? If you can‘t
decide then simply enjoy the taste one after the other.
How about a bit of window shopping and shopping
in the numerous small and large shops or how about
some culture?
In Kolbermoor a tour of the town will give you
new knowledge about how Bavaria‘s industry and
architecture have developed.
In Rosenheim you can discover „sinister and strange
things“ about the history of the town or visit
the original locations of the Rosenheim Cops. In
Wasserburg you can dive into history and go down
into the beer catacombs. Fun is guaranteed for large
and small guests alike.
The best music and most beautiful places for events go hand in hand in
Chiemsee-Alpenland, for example in the Amerang Palace.
Excellent artists and famous small orchestras are always guests in
the Chiemsee-Alpenland again and invite you to infectious musical
events. It doesn‘t matter if it’s the Herrenchiemsee festival in the
cathedral on Frauenchiemsee and in the hall or mirrors of the
Ludwig II’s fairy tale palace or the opera festivals at Gut Immling,
with Festivo in Hohenaschau - friends of classical music and opera
have the choice between high-calibre concerts. The atmosphere
at events in the Renaissance quadrangle of Schloss Amerang or at
the music days Oberaudorf-Reisach is especially beautiful. Good
against the autumn blues is the guitar festival „Strings on the side“
which attracts famous soloists and small groups to Bad Aibling in
November.
FOR MUSIC FRIENDSNot only, but above all in summer music is in the air.
Brass band music is simply always part of it: it doesn‘t matter
whether a maypole is being erected, the autumn festival is on
the agenda or another festival is being celebrated. It becomes
really colourful thanks to the beautiful dirndl dresses (dresses
with bodices and aprons). The men present you with hats with
bound chamois hair, or other magnificent decorative hats. The
couples spin on the dance floor. Their dresses twirling. The
Bavarian folk dancers (shoe slapping) were on before, and now
the Goaßlschnalzer (“the whip crackers”) have been cracking
their whips in a type of Bavarian folkdance.
Is it a cliché? It can‘t really be as good as that? Yes it is, as
traditions are alive, are simply a part of life here and are genuine.
Whoever celebrates a lot, naturally needs to eat well - Bavarian
delicacies from smoked fish on a stick (usually mackerel),
barbecued sausages and even baked almonds are always there.
One of the largest, most beautiful and famous public festivals in the
region is the autumn festival in Rosenheim at the end of August each year.
PLAY HARDLet yourself be carried away by the zest of life in Bavaria, from traditions and from numerous
celebrations which will touch your heart.
