This term saw the adoption of key decisions and milestones that will shape the future direction of the Academy and bring positive changes to the school and its stakeholders. The term began in earnest with preparations and revision for the IGCSE/GCSE IB diploma external examinations. This also included the start of the first ever King Fahad Academy Internal diploma examination for some internal candidates. While the outcome of the IB diploma examinations have been encouraging, with some excellent performance, the IGCSE/GCSE results are being awaited. It is pertinent to observe the series of activities ranging from competitions, clubs, charity sales, student council and drama activities. The icing on the cake was the end of year school play: ‘The Spider and the Dove’ created by Ms Belinda, which was thoroughly enjoyed by studen ts, teachers and parents. We are also delighted to announce that the Academy has now been officially granted the status of ‘candidate school’ to run the IB Middle Years Programme. It gives me immense satisfaction to note that all the hard, preparatory work put towards this achievement has been well rewarded by the new status. Added to this, we now have an experienced and well-qualified MYP coordinator, Ms Elani Macdonald, already taking full charge of the programme. To the delight of parents and students in grades 9 and 10, these two groups will have some experience of the MYP but will go on to complete their IGCSE studies to enable them to sit for the IGCSE examinations here at the Academy. KFA Celebrates Graduation of its 2

nd IBDP Cohort

On the 28th of June, The King Fahad Academy celebrated the graduation of its second IBDP Cohort. The Academy was honoured to have the counselor and Deputy Head of Mission at the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in London, Mr. Abdulrahman Alsuhaibani, attend the graduation in support of our valued students.

Friends and families of the graduates, distinguished guests and teachers gathered to celebrate the successes and achievements of its IBDP students.

Everyone that attended truly enjoyed the beautiful voice of Hana Delvar in Grade 3 who sung “What a wonderful world”; also the heartfelt poem recitation by Iman Alabbasi Alhashmi.

The Director’s address, and valedictory address by Yara Aljefry and Shams Al-Kubaisi highlighted the students great efforts and appreciation towards their esteemed teachers throughout their years at the Academy; in particular Mr. Mohammed Baba, Ms. Hanan Tawfiq, Ms. Bayan Mahmood, and Dr. Sumaya Alyusuf.

All students, staff and guests enjoyed the wonderful dinner following the programme. The Academy’s IBDP graduates will be dearly missed. All the best to them! –

IB1 & Grade 9 Art Students Visit ‘Damien Hirst Exhibition’ at TATE Modern Gallery

The IB1 and Grade 9 Art Students (Boys & Girls) visited the ‘Damien Hirst Exhibition’ in the TATE Modern Gallery. The students had an opportunity to see up close the paintings, sculptures and installations of one of the most influential artist of his generation and probably the most famous contemporary British artist. It was such a great opportunity for the students to research and investigate their own coursework. This exhibition was the first substantial survey of his work in a British institution and brings together key works from over twenty years. The exhibition includes iconic sculptures such as ‘The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living’ 1991, in which he suspended a shark in formaldehyde.

In the exhibition was another famous sculpture which was produced in 2007 and is considered the most expensive sculpture in the world, worth 50 million pounds. The sculpture consists of a platinum cast of a human skull encrusted with 8,601 flawless diamonds, including a pear-shaped pink diamond located in the forehead.

KFA’s International Schools’ Assessment (ISA) Results

Well done KFA students, parents and teachers! The KFA’s results for the ISA assessment tests show that many of our classes performed above average! This is a great achievement given that the assessment program was implemented for the first time at the Academy this year. Grade 9 students for example performed above average in the Mathematics Literacy Test. Some classes performed below average in some tests but our overall performance as a school was within the global average. The ISA assessment program is especially designed for international schools for grades 3 to 10, measuring three key areas: reading, mathematical literacy and writing.

KFA Celebrates International Day 2012

The KFA celebrated International Day on the 21st of June with a host of activities across the Primary and Secondary schools. The Mayor of Ealing along with several guests were part of the delegation to visit the Academy. Students across the school shared their knowledge of the different cultures around the world through dress, food, displays, music, games and presentations about the different countries, their language and culture. Students were reminded of the importance of celebrating cultural diversity and being open minded to others. The day of celebration culminated in a buffet of dishes and culinary

delights from around the world.

KG2B Visit London Transport Museum

In June, KG2B went to the London Transport Museum as our Unit of Inquiry was about the importance of transportation. We were curious and enthusiastic to find about how transport in London has changed over the years. We saw buses, trams, rail and underground trains, taxis and much more! We even went on an adventure hunt around the museum to help the lost mischievous mole Monty get home safely using clues about London to help him!

The King Fahad Academy’s students worked very hard in preparation for International Day this year. International Day is a celebration of all the different nationalities that we are exposed to around the world, as well as in our very own school.

The themes that students worked towards were not so celebratory, however the purpose was to work towards creating a peaceful world through awareness of events happening around us. When we switch on our Televisions every day we see endless statistics of poverty stricken areas around the world, and recently we have been exposed to news about children in armed conflict. Students made extra efforts to understand such situations in many different areas, cities and countries including Sudan, Syria, Gambia, Ireland, and many more.

Each were given different projects to look at, initiated by the MUN students of the Academy who have been working on human rights, children in armed conflict and poverty around the world. The students did an excellent job in presenting their projects to the remainder of the school, as well as our honoured guest Mayor of the London Borough of Ealing, Councillor Mohammed Aslam and others. A further highlight of the event was the food and dishes made by staff from different nationalities. All guests, staff and students enjoyed the delicious variety of foods. The King Fahad Academy looks forward to organising another successful International Day

next year!

The KFA opened its annual IB2 and GCSE Art exhibition on the 21st of May, 2012. Hundreds of students, teachers, parents, locals, and VIP’s from the board of Trustees, Saudi Aramco, and the Saudi Ministry of Education visited the gallery and met with the young artists. The exhibition included paintings, drawings, sculptures and installations.

The theme this year for their GCSE exams was ’Extraordinary’ – the students were inspired from extraordinary people, places, fashion, and extraordinary situations such as poverty and hunger across the world. The students had to choose their own projects during their 2 year coursework. Through their art work, the students expressed their feelings and concerns about important issues such as poverty, war and peace, killing animals, racism, discrimination,

speeding and car accidents.

After School Clubs

This has been a very busy year for after school activities. Children have been involved in Arts and crafts, sporting activities, healthy cooking, music and drama in the English language. There has been a very dedicated Qur’an group which this year emphasized family learning, mothers were invited to attend. Children have been able to improve their Arabic through drama and creative activities. Children have had the opportunity to taste traditional foods kindly provided by the staff and parents in the Heritage Cookery Club and will produce a recipe booklet to share with the school community. Through the Princess Fadwa Centre, a small group of students, parents and teachers have shown determination and dedication, learning to communicate using sign language. They have studied for the British Sign Language exams 101 and 102 and will sit the 103 later in July. We wish them success.

The extracurricular groups provide an opportunity to pursue interests and develop new talents. Children have had fun while at the same time, furthering their knowledge in the after school groups. We thank all the students and teachers for taking part.

Primary End of Year Assembly

On the 29th of June all Primary students celebrated their End of the Year Assembly. The theme was “Learning through performing Arts’’. The program included extracts from the musicals ‘The Great Big Enormous Turnip’, ‘Precious to me’, the Arabic play ‘Azuz the Artist’, PE creative sequences and many more. All students showed great confidence on stage while sharing their learning with the audience. Parents and guests were very impressed by the performance.

Over 2 ½ days in June, 17 pupils and 2 members of staff visited Kingswood Overstrand Educational Centre and had a highly enjoyable time during this action-packed trip to the Norfolk coast. Pupils studied:

(a) The North Sea coastal processes, landforms and management strategies and

(b) Changes in the Glaven River from its source to mouth.

The pupils were able to see for themselves what they had been taught in the classroom. Equally beneficial for them was the opportunity to carry out their own measurements of beach profiles, groynes, longshore drift, downstream changes channel gradient, discharge, velocity and load to further their understanding of river/coastal processes and issues. The following work involved ICT presentations based on the work of the day. The weather was also memorable with horizontal rain on the Monday morning providing a chilly introduction to the excursion! In between the geography work, pupils had much fun negotiating obstacles blindfolded, Jacob’s ladder, climbing the tower and even trying to beat their friends at fencing. –

Update from the School Health Coordinator

School Health coordinated several activities throughout the school year. Many sessions were conducted to provide health education to students in topics such as bullying, anger management, diabetes, breast cancer, puberty, personal hygiene, etc. The topics were carefully selected in coordination with the school heads and teachers to insure these topics are linked to the student curricula. Some examples of health education events included the following:

1. The KFA Healthy Eating Campaign: A booklet was prepared

and distributed to student parents. The booklet included

some recommended healthy menus to help parents

prepare healthy school lunchboxes for their children.

Improvement to the ingredients of student lunchboxes was

observed following this campaign.

2. Road Safety Tips for Parents. A leaflet was prepared and

distributed to parents to promote road safety awareness.

It was emphasized that safety awareness should be

imparted in childhood so safety can be a habit.

3. Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP). This program

is a coordinated approach to school health which should

help improve students’ health and their capacity to learn.

It is done through the support of families, schools and

communities working together. The program was kicked

off this year and is expected to play an important role for

KFA in the area of student health.

KFA Students Participate in ‘Child and Youth Finance’ International Summit & Awards Ceremony in Amsterdam

The Child and Youth Finance International Summit & Awards Ceremony held at Amsterdam, Netherlands on 2- 5 April 2012 was the first gathering of International Stakeholders on the issues of financial inclusion and Child and Finance Education. The main theme of the event was ‘Reshaping the Future of Finance’.

KFA IB students Malick Elgmati, Abdullah Al Saad, and grade 10 students Hassan Al Bagdadi, Ala El Kurd, Hashim Hassan, Laith Mohammed and Yasin Rayes all attended the conference along with their former classmate, Bilal Al Tahan.

The Child and Youth Finance Movement is a global movement dedicated to making sure that every child in the world has a savings account when they graduate from primary school and has the financial knowledge and skills to be able to operate this account. The meeting had 346 participants from 83 countries as well as 70 young people aged 8 to 18 from over 40 countries. Participants represented the public, private, financial and civil society sectors as well as leading researchers and other experts in the field.

We were based in the seaside town of Zandvoort. Children and youth were engaged in a full day of energisers and games; sharing currencies from their home countries; creating collected ‘artworks’ or coins on canvas; performing role-playing exercises, making presentations and raising the financial issues which mattered most to them. From debating the role of media in child-friendly banking to discussing inequalities between rich and poor countries. The top six policy themes were: 1) Provide financial literacy education 2) Create child friendly banks 3) Encourage youth led enterprises 4) Create more equitable trade between developed and developing countries 5) Create awareness of youth finance and 6) Support mobile and web-based banking.

I was extremely proud of our students as they applied their business strategies in their presentations and in making decisions. They were represented in each of the six groups (mentioned above) where they outlined the top 10 points which they presented to the policy makers at the RAI Convention Centre. The Centre housed more than 400 delegates! The main goal of the summit was a joint commitment to reach 100 million children and youth in 100 countries by 2015.

The Summit highlight was a message from the UN Secretary General who stated: “I strongly support in helping young people gain greater financial literacy as well better access to services that will lead the way to employment, entrepreneurship and

investing opportunities.” – Ms Veronica Gracias
