Changes to the Program
Spring Season High Player Development Focus MPS Player Development Clinics GK Specialty Clinics Some Focused Coaching Activity
Fall Season High Coach Development Focus MPS Coaching Clinics MYSA Mandatory Licensing Some Specialty Player Clinics
Marlborough Youth SoccerCoaches Meeting - Spring 2012
Changes to the Program – Why?
• Fall MPS clinic participation was low – light and location barriers
• Logistically difficult to manage both player and coach development activities effectively
• Our town program needed a more focused coach development approach
• This change allows coaches to apply what they have learned in the fall season during the spring

The Coach’s Toolbox
a) Allow the conditions of the game to coach the topic
b) Coach in the natural stoppages of the activity- ball goes out of play
c) Coach in the flow of the activity (large group)
d) Coach individual players as the activity continues
e) Coach using the “freeze” method

Lesson Plan Organization
Organization…simple to complex
Warm-up activity • No pressure or light pressure from opponents • Pressure from ball and imposed demands
Small sided game activity • Introduce pressure of opponent(s) • Does not have to be directional, but the more it looks like the game the better it is for the development of the players
Expanded small sided game activity • Increase number of players • Directional • Looks like the game
Scrimmage (game) with appropriate numbers • Let’s play soccer • The game with the rules
Marlborough Youth SoccerCoaches Meeting - Spring 2012
4 Components of the Game
Try to incorporate all of these in every activity or game, but the emphasis needs to be age appropriate:
Technical
Tactical
Physical
Psychological

Guided Discovery
By asking our players questions to which they must come up with answers, we can insure that our players are thinking, as opposed to mindlessly following our directions.
Low Order Questions – e.g. what’s the best part of the foot to use when making a short accurate pass to a teammate
High Order Questions - e.g. how can we get the ball down the field faster
Guided Questions – e.g Where would be a good place to pass the ball if you wanted your teammate to move into space
