Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The rich man’s sumptuous feasting also echoes the

"eat, drink, and be merry" boast of the man with bigger barns in Luke 12:13-21 – Gospel of Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary time, July 31, 2016.

The story of the rich man and Lazarus is unique in Luke. The nameless rich man did not knowing Lazarus. He did not doing any harmful to Lazarus. But why does the rich man being punished? Where does Luke intend the au-dience to see itself in this parable? Lazarus’ story offers two lessons:

It is about the question of discipleship and wealth. The insatiable appetite for wealth will narrow and conceal our visions from recognizing the poor in the world. Saint ‘Mother’ Teresa of Calcutta once said: ‘At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have re-ceived, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by 'I was hungry and you gave me to eat, I was naked and you clothed me, I was homeless and you took me in.' Hungry not only for bread - but hungry for love. Naked not only for clothing - but naked for human dignity and respect. Homeless not only for want of a room of bricks - but homeless because of rejection.”

A warning for all. Death will come to all. The terrifyingly vivid apocalyptic journey to afterlife awakens a sense of urgency of preparations for eternal life.

In Luke's wonderful imagery, OUR God, like Abraham's bosom, awaits to embrace us in loving arms now and after our death.

Fr. Hai

The Pastors Corner * La Voz del Pastor

Padre Hai

MUSIC MINISTRY

Singing the Praises of Singing in the Choir Gladys Knight, seven time Grammy award winning singer, has been singing in her local church choir for over fifty years! So have Ed Sharp and John Biondi, members of our STM church choir. I guess it must agree with them (and us too). “Recent research on the biological effects of music and singing shows just how good belt-ing out a song is for every-one.” Researchers in the UK found that singing with a group for 70 minutes a week resulted in positive immune responses and improved mood. Imagine that Choir singing improves your health! And if that’s not enough motivation, consider that it is also a ministry, an opportunity to give back to God and to your church community. Call or email Mary for more details. [email protected] or 713 980 3111.
