Message from the President:

Our chapter's four delegates Doug Quigley, Chris Waasdorp, Norman Kerewsky and Craig Courtright attended the annual conference and camp out at San Clemente State Park on 19 October. It was a bit chilly but the sound of the ocean waves and the fresh ocean air made it worth while. Every year corporate gives out awards for member recognition. I received a Life Time Achievement Award that is only given out to one person a year. Our chapter received the President Award. I can truly say that it's due to our members. Phil Wright was a volunteer as Corporate Secretary. Roger Gray was reelected as Corporate Secretary, as well as chapter treasurer. These are just a few of the examples of what makes me proud and why our chapter is looked on with integrity and purpose within the chapters of the Great Outdoors. Thank you all very much.

ANACAPA IS AND -

CHANNEL ISLANDS NATIONAL PARK

Anacapa Island Adventure

After carpooling to Channel Islands Harbor at Oxnard, ten members boarded the Vanguard, our boat for the 1.5 hour ride to Anacapa. The trip was a delight. Our Captain called attention to the sea lions, porpoises, whales, peli-cans and gulls. A sportif whale, only yards from our ves-sel, entertained us by rising, spouting and skimming three times alongside our boat. Pods of porpoise jumped and swam in the boat's wake, as large pelicans hovered over-head. We watched as seals lifted their heads above the water line to make childish attempts to catch low flying birds.

Arriving at the cliffs of Anacapa, one of eight Channel Is-lands created from volcanic eruptions, we showed our Great Outdoor prowess in mastering the 153 metal and concrete steps leading to the mile square mesa. Twelve miles out, these islets were once connected to the mainland. During those periods animals crossed the boundaries. But, oceans rising from Ice Age melt, caused these crossings to be submerged, and many of these species of animals adapted over the years to their isola-tion, and evolved into new creatures. These islets are home to 2000 varieties of plants and animals, 145 of which exist nowhere else on earth! These islets were also home to the Chumash Indians, until they were exploited by Spanish missionary conversion tactics.

A National Park guide talked us through a two mile trail around the mesa, with a most impressive stop at Inspira-tion Point, a marvelous vista of rocks, kelp forests and other islets. We also stopped to view a rookery of sea li-ons basking and barking below. The guide warned us to stay "two human lengths" from the unstable edge,.but it became obvious that some interpreted this safety warn-ing as being "pygmy lengths". We visited the on-site mu-seum housing historical photos and the brass and crystal light from the original lighthouse. Also on the island are facilities for the Ranger, water tanks so he has toilets that flush, and facilities for several groups doing research on plant and animal life. There is a small camping area, for those Garbo followers who "vant to be alone".

A few hours on the island, and an easy climb down the ladders, we then headed back to the marina. More playful porpoises helped take ones attention off the cool evening air. Our hardy group, ever prepared, donned woolen hats, jackets and sweaters to ease the transition from the delightful, almost sunny weather experienced during the day.

A stop for dinner on the way home, and we ended a per-fect day of sightseeing, hiking, new environments and education. A perfect Great Outdoor experience.

A hearty thanks to Tim Carey for planning and executing this wonderful outing.
