WILSON HEALTH EARNS AN ‘A’ FOR PATIENT SAFETY New Hospital Safety Scores, which assign A, B, C, D and F letter grades to hospitals nationwide and pro-vide the most complete picture of patient safety in the U.S. health care system, were announced today by The Leapfrog Group, a national patient safety watch-dog. Wilson Health was one of 798 hospitals to receive an A, ranking among the safest hospitals in the U.S. “We are very proud of our ‘A’ grade,” said Linda Maurer, Chief Nursing Officer, Wilson Health. “Provid-ing effective, safe patient care is central to everything we do. We are continually collecting and reporting patient safety information to measure our progress and set goals. Our ‘A’ grade is a direct reflection of our continued dedication to our patients.”“Avoidable deaths in hospitals should be the number one concern of our health care leaders. Hospitals that earn an ‘A’ from Leapfrog are leaders in saving lives, and we commend them and urge their continued vigilance,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group.Developed under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D and F grades to more than 2,500 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public

The medical care she provides is exceptional.”Inskeep began her career at Wilson Health 18 years ago when she joined Wilson as a tech in the home health and hospice department. She joined the Cath Lab team at Wilson in 2013, where she works today. Inskeep graduated from Edison Community College in Piqua, Ohio, with her Associate’s degree in Nursing.

Doris Knapke, the lactation consultant at the Family Birth Center, hosts a Mother’s Support Group that meets once a month on Fridays. She has organized this support group for sev- eral years. The Mother’s Support Group is a great service that provides support to the women and children in this community. The Support Group is open to anyone who is interested, not just breastfeeding mothers. At most of the support groups, Doris provides information on topics of interest for attending mothers and she even had a picnic at the park this past fall, so that the active toddlers could play. Doris has a lot of regular members in this group and the women have developed supportive friendships over the years. Doris has seen sev-eral of their families grow in numbers, too. In honor of Mother’s Day, this May Doris surprised the group with free massages! She felt that it was something that none of the mothers would have done for them-selves, but they all deserved to be pampered even if for a short amount of time. She arranged for Nancy Schwartz, the Administrative Coordinator at the Family Birth Center, who is also a licensed massage therapist, to give the mas-sages to the mothers. The group meets in the Profession-al Building classrooms, so she arranged for some private space in the Education Department across the hallway for the massages. There were 11 mothers and 17 children at the support group and Nancy was able to give each mother a relaxing massage, while Doris kept the children entertained by making a Mother’s Day craft as a special gift for their Moms. Doris also had fun snacks that the kids were able to make, then eat.Thank you, Doris, for making our patients feel extra special this Mother’s Day!

SPOTLIGHT ON JANA SCHNIPPEL The Albert E. Dyckes Healthcare Worker of the Year Award is given each year to one Ohio caregiver who personifies a leader who gives back to the community, routinely goes beyond the call of duty and has overcome odds to succeed. All nomi-nees will be honored at the June OHA Recognition Ban-quet in Columbus. Jana Schnippel, Family Birth Center director, is the 2016 Wilson Health nominee for the Ohio Hospital Association’s (OHA) Albert E. Dykes Healthcare Worker of the Year Award. Jana has made a positive impact on countless moms and babies over her 12 years at Wilson Health. Averaging close to 900 deliveries per year, Jana has created a birthing experi-ence attractive to families throughout the region. Jana’s positive, caring attitude trickles down to her staff and patients. As one of her co-workers put it, “Jana is a great leader who doesn’t dictate, but rather provides the tools and education to guide others and help them grow.”Jana has developed a very active shared governance model in the Birth Center, as well as a very in-depth education/competency program for the staff. She is passionate about providing safe, quality care to mothers and babies and encourages her staff to treat each patient with respect and compassion. Jana embraces change and has led initiatives such as the Calming First Bath, Kangaroo Care, OHA’s Safe Sleep program and the Imagination Library to support early literacy. She also helped Wilson obtain the Healthy Ohio Breastfeeding Friendly Employer award. Jana has been instrumental in the implementation of LEAN process improvements in the Birth Center. Under her leadership Wilson’s Family Birth Center proudly deliv-ered its 10,000th baby in October of 2015. Jana’s drive comes from her faith that we are all here to serve a higher purpose than our own. The Patient Experience scores from Jana’s department regularly rank in the 90th percentile in the country.Jana and her husband have four beautiful children and reside in Botkins. Congratulations on this great achievement, Jana!
