Alan’s BitAlan’s Bit
It is amazing that year after year we can celebrate the harvest of God’s goodness in
our world ... of course, that was what he promised. The problems arise when we apply
our selfishness as a human race to the issue of sharing and distribution. BUT we
should not blame God for that!
This year as a Church we will celebrate harvest at San Pedro, Sabinillas and Soto-
grande church services. Look at the Diary page for the dates and join us to say thank
you to God for his goodness. But words do not go far enough. As believers in God we
need to put our words into practice. We need to share our plenty with people in need.
Traditionally we bring gifts to these services and they are distributed to those in need.
In the last two years we have linked with Emaus in Estepona, Caritas in San Pedro and
a local church in Algeciras. We will do the same this year. If you would like to help bring
non-perishable foods or money to our services.
This year we are hoping to help Caritas in their attempt to establish a
‘soup kitchen’ project in San Pedro, similar to the Emaus project in
Estepona. We will be having a harvest appeal to raise money for
Church funds and for those in need. Look out for the details and
please give generously.
As a Christian all that I have has been given me by God, together
with this wonderful world. I can do no less than to give myself and
my possessions back to him in thanks. Alan

for Todayfor Today A CHAIR AND A PRAYER
A woman asked her local vicar to call by and see her bedridden mother. He did so and
found the woman lying in bed with her head propped up on two pillows. Beside the bed
was a simple dining chair.
“Who are you?” the woman asked. The minister told her and she said: “Would you
mind closing the door?”
A little puzzled, he did as she asked and then she continued: “I have never told anyone
this, not even my daughter, but all of my life I’ve never known how to pray. At church I
used to hear the priest talk about prayer, but it went right over my head. “So I aban-
doned any attempt at prayer...until one day, my best friend told me that prayer was
just a simple matter of having a conversation with Jesus. She suggested I sat with an
empty chair in front of me and try to see Jesus sitting on it because he promised “I will
be with you always”. Then she said to just speak to him in the same way we were do-
ing right then.
“So, I tried it and I’ve liked it so much that I do it a couple of hours every day. I’m care-
ful though. If my daughter saw me talking to an empty chair, she’d have a fit!”
The minister was moved by the story and encouraged the old woman to continue on
the journey. Then he prayed with her and left. Two nights later the daughter called to
tell the minister that her mother had died that afternoon. “Did she die in peace?” he
asked. “Yes, when I left the house about two o’clock, she called me over to her bed-
side, told me she loved me and kissed me on the cheek.
“When I got back from the store an hour later, I found her. But there was something
strange about her death. Apparently, just before mum died, she leaned over and
rested her head on the chair beside the bed. What do you make of that?”

From the Registers
The Chaplaincy has launched an initia-
tive to support local charities like Caritas
and Emaus. It involves a simple appeal
to hand over any small change about
the house. The theory is that everyone
has loose change that sits in odd cor-
ners which, if collected, could add up to
a sizeable amount and do a lot of good.
See page 17 for details.
Helping in small amounts
The Home Groups are starting again
after their summer break. There are at
present four of these at various loca-
tions in the chaplaincy; contact details
for all of them are listed on page 7.
The one at Lorenzo and Margarita’s
(636 863 270) convenes every other
Thursday in Alcaidesa. Meetings start
with a meal followed by Bible study and
prayers. The immediate schedule Oct 6
& 20 and Nov 3 & 17, (8pm).
In addition there is a Men’s Prayer group
which meets every other Saturday (952
808 605) at the Chaplaincy starting at
9.30am with breakfast and fellowship.
The immediate schedule is Oct 8 & 22
and Nov 5 & 19.

Meet … Meet … NikkiNikki Nikki van Wyk was born in Perth, Scotland. After
studying at Napier University she achieved a BA in
Commerce and worked at Bank of Scotland, Standard
Life and then BskyB, where she met husband-to-be,
Gerrit. Nikki has two daughters, Charlotte and Lau-
ren. She likes walking their two dogs and reading. “I
used to play classical guitar and this is something I
plan to take up again once I find the free time.”
Having only ever lived in “bonnie Scotland” before,
she moved to Spain to be with Gerrit who works in
Gibraltar. The couple joined the Costa del Sol West
chaplaincy after friends had mentioned there was a
Methodist service in Gibraltar. “We attended that and then learned that they came to
Sotogrande every second Sunday. So we came along and then realised that there was
a service here every Sunday and here we made friends and the rest is history.”
What do you miss most about the UK? What do you miss most about the UK? What do you miss most about the UK? What do you miss most about the UK? My Friends and family, also the convenience of
the UK; you need something you have a choice of about seven places to get it and so
much cheaper. I also miss the people, so many characters there.
What do you like most about Spain? What do you like most about Spain? What do you like most about Spain? What do you like most about Spain? Well, it has to be the weather. The pace of life
here is fantastic, not rushed like the UK. Here, there is always tomorrow.
What do you like least about Spain? What do you like least about Spain? What do you like least about Spain? What do you like least about Spain? The water, I miss a nice calcium-free cup of tea.
Which prominent person do you admire? Which prominent person do you admire? Which prominent person do you admire? Which prominent person do you admire? Joyce Myer, love her preaching, her attitude
and the fact she has come through some shocking times in her life and she chose the
right path and to draw strength from the right place.

Asked what he had learned in Sunday
School a little boy said: “Well, our teacher
told us God sent Moses behind enemy lines
to rescue the Israelites and when he got to
the Red Sea, he built a pontoon bridge and
after they’d walked over it he radioed for
an air-strike to blow it up and all the Isra-
elites were saved.”
“Bobby, is that really what your teacher
taught you?” his mother asked. “No,
mum,” he replied, “ but you’d never be-
lieve what the teacher really told us!”
The way they tell it A young boy suddenly announced to his
mother: “I’ve decided to become a vicar
when I grow up.”
When asked why, he replied: “Well, I have
to go to church on Sunday anyway, and I
reckon it will be more fun to stand up and
yell than to sit and listen.”
A priest told his congregation: “The good
news is we have enough money to start our
church building project. The bad news is
it’s still in your pockets.”

When I say... “I am a Christian” I still feel the sting of pain,
I have my share of heartaches, so I call upon His name.
When I say... “I am a Christian” I’m not holier than thou,
I’m just a simple sinner who received God’s grace – somehow.

JESUS IN THE COMMUNITY
HE UPSET THE BANKERS. He wasn’t afraid of them! Not like our
leaders today. The bankers of his day sat at tables in the temple
courts exchanging money (at exorbitant rates)... ‘He made a whip out of
cords and drove them from the temple area, scattering the coins of the
money changers, and overturned their tables’ [John2.15]
HE TOLD PEOPLE NOT TO EVADE PAYING THEIR TAXES…‘Give to Caesar
what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s [Matthew 22.21]
HE CONDEMNED CHILD ABUSERS…‘If anyone causes one of these little
ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large
millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea’ [Matthew 18.5]
HE PRAISED THE GIVING OF THE POOR WIDOW… ‘Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple
collection. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small coins. He said: “This poor widow has put in
more than all the others. They gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all
she had to live on” ’ [Luke 21. 2-4] AND HE SAID... ‘It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a
needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God’ [Mark 10.25]
HE PRAISED WORKERS FOR PEACE… ‘Blessed are the peacemakers for the will be called sons of
God’ [Matthew 5.9]
HE JUDGED THOSE WHO CONDEMNED A WOMAN CAUGHT COMMITTING ADULTERY… ‘If anyone of you
is without sin let him be the first to throw a stone at her’ [John 8.7]
HE SPOKE AGAINST LUST… ‘I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already commit-
ted adultery with her in his heart’ [Matthew 5.28]
AFTER THE STORY OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN, HE SAID… ‘Go and do the same’ [John 19.37]
JESUS SAID TO THE FISHERMEN, SIMON AND ANDREW… ‘Come, follow me’ [Mark1.17]

At San Pedro the children have been learning about the power of prayer.
The children heard stories from the bible, including the story from Kings
1, 17 of Elijah going to the widow’s home. In the story the widow is wor-
ried that she has only enough grain meal and oil for her and her son, but
Elijah tells her to have faith. She makes bread and the oil and meal bar-
rels never empty. Baby dolls toy milk and juice bottles were used to
great effect showing how just like in the story they appeared to empty
and refill on their own. This learning gave greater emphasis to the
weekly prayer time. A box is left in the entrance hall for church members
to leave notes for those they wish the Sunday School children to pray for.

During summer Sotogrande Sunday school
has been looking at 'Showing God's
Love'. We looked at showing God's love in our
family and the story of Joseph and his technicol-
oured coat. We played a game with everyone
tried to dress each other with their hands tied
together.
We also looked at showing God's love by
making and keeping promises. We
discovered how God kept his promises to
Noah. We also looked at showing God's
love by caring for people. We played a
game where we blindfolded each other
and by voice guided each other across
the porch of the Sunday School.
Our special thanks to Debbie, Caroline and Nikki
who have been helping run the
Sunday school during the Summer.

The ‘Big church’ is visible from the A7
autovia. Exit the A7 at Km 130 and take
the coast-side service road heading
northeast. This brings you to a round-
about . Take the first exit (right). Pass
the security point barriers and go
straight on for about 200m. On the right-
hand side there is the first of a series of
white-on-blue signs to the
‘IIIIGLESIAGLESIAGLESIAGLESIA’. Follow these through
a large housing development
to reach the church and its
large car park.
Join us for coffee after the
service at the back of the
church
Services at Sotogrande are
held in La Iglesia de Nues-
tra Sra. de la Merced (the
‘Big church’). Many mem-
bers of the congregation
participate in both Method-
ist and Anglican services.
