VOLUNTEERING PROJECT

As we told you in the Invitation Package, the volunteering project in Barcelona consists in

teaching English to children and teenagers that are in risk of social exclusion and

otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity for meeting young foreign people and breaking

interpersonal barriers.

In the morning, from Monday to Friday, you will be divided into smaller groups and go to 4

different centres where you will teach English for about two hours. Before the lessons, you

will also have time to prepare the sessions and decide how to facilitate them.

The weekend before the lessons start we will explain you the main topics you have to teach

and help you preparing everything.

The youth centres you will go to are:

Espai 12@16:

It’s located in the neighbourhood of Poble Sec. The

teenagers are aged 16 to 20 years old and they are

willing to learn English.

Volunteers: Rui, Dhouha and Daryan

Casal Concòrdia:

This centre is located next to the previous one. The

students are mainly migrant girls aged 13 to 17 that

have failed their English exams in the high school and

need some help to improve their English level.

Volunteers: Emna and Sofia

Page 9: Welcome Package Go SCORP 2016

Servei Solidari:

You are going to work with four teenagers from the

project “Pont Jove”. They are ex-wards that enter this

project after turning 18 years old. Their situation often

leads to many social problems and they have a really

bad level of English. However, they are willing to learn

and the foundation professionals are looking forward

to welcome you.

Volunteers: Catarina and Cheng-Yueh

La Miraculosa:

This childhood centre is located in the neighbourhood

called l’Eixample. There are two groups of 10 children,

aged 8 to 14. English lessons will take place from

Monday to Thursday. During Fridays morning, we have

a special project for you that will be explained at the

right time. ;)

Volunteers: Rita, Ilari and Devar.

People going to each centre have been decided based on your motivations and the languages

you know, as we wanted to make sure that both you and the teenagers can take profit of

the project.

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use

to change the world.

TRAININGS

1. Peer to Peer Education

During this training you will learn what Peer to Peer Education

is, why is it that important and some basic tips that will be

very useful during your work in the youth centres.

2. Paediatric Psychology

Many of the children you will be working with have gone

through difficult experiences in their life, and it is very

important to have an idea on how to manage with some

behaviours or situations you may face during the volunteering

project. This training is aimed to give you the clues to

overcome this kind of problems.

3. Interculturality

Both SCORP and this project are about different

cultures and how we interact with each other,

always trying to understand our differences and

learning as much as we can from them.

4. Human Rights & Medicine

Well… This training doesn’t really need to be explained. We

are med students, we believe in equality and respect for

every human being, this training was made for all of us. ;)

Page 11: Welcome Package Go SCORP 2016

5. Advocacy

When trying to change de world some tools can be

really useful for us, and advocacy is one of them. We

want you to learn different ways to fight for the

things you believe in, and this can be the perfect

training for getting this aim.

6. Mental Health

One in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders in some point of their lives. Furthermore, nearly two-thirds of people with a known mental disorder are not following any kind of treatment, besides they don’t even ask for help from a health professional. So, why don’t ask for help? Stigma, discrimination… There is a long way to go, but we hope this training is going to give you some clues to take action.

7. Refugees and Migrants Rights

Over the world, about 60 million people are

refugees. This is the highest number reported

ever. Asylum seeking is a universal human

right and it is also recognized in the Spanish

Constitution. In 2014 in Spain, there was an

increased number of asylum seekers due to the

conflicts in Syria and Ukraine, even though the

numbers are still lower comparing to other

countries in Europe. However, the Spanish

government is showing lack of commitment

and responsibility, and we are not respecting

these people human rights.

We need to start working and advocating for their welcome and integration, and this is

why we want you to receive an specific training on it and to help us create a whole new

project, that will be presented by the end of Go SCORP. Ready to rock it?

SOCIAL PROGRAMME

2.07.2016

After your plane lands in Barcelona, we

will be taking you to the flat where you

will stay these two weeks, so that you

start familiarizing with it. After that, we

think that the best way to welcome you

and break the ice is to have the first

dinner together and playing a get-to-

know-your-colleagues game (such a

nice way to start these amazing

days!!). And for one night… we will be

cooking for you! (don’t get used to it :P )

3.07.2016

After your first morning, we will visit the

exteriors of the magnificient Castle of

Montjuïc and the MNAC (a VERY special

and beautiful museum). After that, we

think you should see by yourselves why

the Fountains of Montjuïc are said to be

MAGIC!!

4.07.2016

It’s going to be the first working day, so we have

decided to give you the possibility to relax during

the afternoon as you might be tired. However, if

you are that kind of person who’s always moving

around, we also offer you another option: the

labyrinth of Horta!! It is a 750 meters-long park

where you can enter easily, but when trying to go

out you won’t find it that simple. Dare to enter?

Page 13: Welcome Package Go SCORP 2016

5.07.2016

Tuesday afternoon, we will visit Gràcia, a town known by

the good vibes and proximity feeling it transmits. After that,

you will have the afternoon to prepare your very own made

plate for the International Food and Drinking Party, which

will be taking place in Gràcia too, continued by hours of fun

sharing traditions!!!

6.07.2016

During the afternoon we will get in the Gothic Town of Barcelona, the main historic heart,

full of untold stories and surrounded by a romantic aura which can impregnate your soul,

even making oneself fall in love with this area of our big city.

At night we will go to one of the biggest and

most famous discos in Barcelona: The

Razzmatazz Club. On Wednesdays the club

celebrates the Dirty Dancing Party, so be

prepared for the best music and partying…

Welcome to the Barcelonian night!

7.07.2016

To keep short distance with curiosity, we

think that a visit to Cosmocaixa’s museum

is the best way to have a great time enjoying

the peculiarities of SCIENCE! :) (don’t worry

it won’t be a boring exposition).

After that we will go to the Bunkers (where

there’s an incredible bird’s eye view of

Barcelona) and have a nice picnic there!

Page 14: Welcome Package Go SCORP 2016

14

8.07.2016

After a week of hard work, we think you

deserve an unbelievable night. That’s

why we thought that Opium, the disco

club in front of the beach and one of the

most cosmopolitan places, was probably a

good idea.

9-10.07.2016: Special Weekend

We want to keep some surprises for the weekend, but we can tell you that we are not going

to stay in Barcelona. On Saturday morning we’ll take a bus to a little town called Santa

Coloma de Queralt. It is located in the southern part of Catalonia, and it’s known for its

beautiful landscapes (next to some amazing windmills) and its traditions. We will be sleeping

in a house in the historic centre, and spend our time relaxing and visiting the most beautiful

places of the area.

To know the rest of the planning, you will have to wait until the weekend!

11.07.2016:

Are you fan of football? Of course, who doesn’t

know Barça is the best football team in the

world? Just kidding! If you support football you

will have the opportunity to visit the Camp Nou

and if you’re not, don’t worry! Illa Diagonal is

waiting for you for some shopping! If you enjoy

both, you can also do both!

Page 15: Welcome Package Go SCORP 2016

12.07.2016:

Get super ready for the MEGA TOUR!!! In this

amazing walk you will be amazed by the nature of

Barcelona city. We’re only saying that you must

wear comfortable shoes because the sights are

marvelous and it will have a very special ending if

you are not very tired. But...it is a secret!

13.07.2016:

We know you were waiting for this moment… So, the time

has come! Today we’re going to visit the Sagrada Família

and we will have a chilly night at home, but plenty of nice

activities if you still have energy!

14.07.2016:

That night we will go to the Ovella Negra or maybe

to some bars in Les Rambles. Maybe an ice cream

can be a good option too! Yummy!

15.07.2016:

And finally… last but not least, we will go to

Tibidabo and have loads of fun and pictures there.

Then of course, we have prepared a special closing

ceremony for you. We don’t want you to leave! :(

I wrote every day between the ages of 12 and 20 when I stopped because I

went to Barcelona, where life was too exciting to write.
