    August 2011

    Dear Families,

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome each of you and your families to Sonora Elemen-tary School. As SSS board members, it is among our responsibilities to talk with you about our or-

ganization, welcome you as a member, and very importantly, encourage you to get involved in yourschool. But first, since this may be the first time at Sonora Elementary, for many of you, it is impor-tant for us to explain what SSS is all about.

What is the SSS and who can be a Member?

SSS is a non-profit organization comprised of parents, teachers, and community members thatstrive to enhance childrens educational experiences. SSS is not part of National PTA organizationand therefore we do not have to pay annual dues. All of the funds raised annually are done sothrough various fundraising events. Every year, we have a pledge drive at the beginning of theschool year to kick off the year. Signing up does not mean you automatically sign up to volunteer, it

just means you support our group and believe in what were doing. Our group is not all aboutfundraising, we are however all about uniting families and having fun, while supporting our schooland community. You will see our membership tables at all of the Back-to-School nights this Septem-ber. We realize not everyone can volunteer so everyone has an option of signing up for three volun-teer hours (for the year), or donating $30, or both! Please join our team for 2011-20112 and help usachieve our goals!

    SSS Programs & Fundraising

Our primary objective as SSS is to provide our school with funds, programs, resources and servicesthat will enrich and maximize the education of every child. To meet this important objective, and af-ford services that are no longer covered by our school budgets, we must fundraise. Though it may

not be our favorite responsibility, it is a necessary one. Our school community must raise money ifwe want to provide our children with the storytellers, story and puppet crafters, author readings, concerts, nature talks, grade and curriculum based assemblies and other hands-on, interactive ex-periences and presentations that we have in the past. Our school is excited about several new pro-grams for this coming school year! Our Welcome brochure details all of the programs we sponsorand support and the enclosed calendar mentions tentatively scheduled events.

We will hold our annual Fall Book Fair, will continue collecting Box Tops, Labels for Education, MyCoke Rewards, and will continue our Grocery Bucks for Bobcats program (Safeway E-Scrip/Save-Mart Shares/PriceCo) which help support many unique events/experiences, a free Ice Cream social, and other free student and family events are also to come.

Become a VolunteerWhy YOU should get involved!

As you can see, we are a busy group. This is where you can come in! We need your help, and sodo your children. Over 500 independent studies on parent involvement show that when parents getinvolved in their childrens education grades go up, test scores improve, children are more likely toattend better schools after high school, they have fewer discipline problems and theyre less likely touse drugs and alcohol. So get involved TODAY!

A volunteer table will also be set up at each of the Back-to-School nights. Stop by to see all of our

volunteer opportunities! Volunteering doesnt have to mean a huge time commitment. We understand

it is increasingly more difficult to find time to give, but please, whatever your time schedule allows, we

have need of you. We even have tasks that can be performed in the evenings, during the day or that

dont even involve coming to the school at all.

    SSS is going Green

We will be sending more emails and posting information on our organizations website and Facebook

page. If you are new to our school, or have not received our emails, please complete our registrationform with all your information. Your name will be added to our distribution list. If you do not have ac-

cess to email, we will continue to provide newsletters on a monthly basis. Also, our PTO website

www.supportsonoraschool.org is a great resource. By September you will see contact information

for our SSS board, a tentative calendar of events, parenting resources, and other useful information.

    Check it out!

    In conclusion

Our parent group is certainly about more than bake sales! Were about men and women working to-

gether toward a common goal. That goal, simply stated, is creating a better school and a better edu-

cational experience for our children. We strive to create an atmosphere where teachers, administrators, and support staff can do their best work and so can our children. There is so much

more that can be done and we need your help. We invite you to join us for our first meeting Thurs-

day, September 1 at the school library at 5:30 PM. We look forward to meeting you!

On behalf of SSS we would once again like to extend a warm welcome and best wishes for a suc-

cessful school year! Please contact any of us with questions or comments. Enjoy the rest of your

    summer!

    Your child benefits.

When parents get connected to the school, children dobetter. Research shows children whose parents are

involved get better grades, do better on tests, and

have fewer discipline problems at school.

We make a difference. Our mission is to create the kind of school community

where teachers and administrators can do their best

workand so can our children. We provide support

for teachers in and out of the classroom. We provide

resources they need. We help create learning opportu-nities for children. And we try to build the kind of sup-

portive, caring atmosphere that makes school fun.

We pledge to honoryour time constraints.People are often reluctant to participate because

theyre afraid theyll get pulled into a black hole of

never-ending time commitment. That wont happen

here. An hour or two a semester really makes a differ-

ence. And we wont push you to commit more thanyou want to or are able to.

We have fun.Volunteer work shouldnt be drudgery. We accomplish

a lot, and not everything we do is easy. But we know

were not balancing the national debt, either. We dont

take ourselves too seriously, and we try to enjoy our-

selves along the way whenever possible.

Meet nice peoplewho share your concerns. We all have a common bond. We care about creating

the best possible educational experience for our chil-

dren. We are neighbors and peers who share many of

the same experiences. And many friendships have

developed as a result of those connections.

Theres a lot to be done.

These days, schools are asked to do more with less. Our help is needed more than ever to fill the gaps.

We can match jobs toyour interests and abilities. The work we do covers a broad spectrum: filing and

photocopying, planning and executing events, writing

and editing, working directly with children, managing

a budget and cash flow, and lots more. We encour-

age creative ideas, and were thrilled to have peopletake on tasks that meet their skills and interests.

Were welcoming. To us, there are no outsiders. We are people who

have come together to work toward common goals.

We couldnt be happier to have you join us in work-

    ing toward those goals.

Were about parent involvement, not fundraising. In these times of tight budgets, parent groups every-

where are having to fill in the gaps, and so are we.

But our number one goal is to get more parents con-

nected to the school. Thats because more than 300

independent research studies show that building

parent involvement in education is the number one

thing we can do to create a great school and

    improve student performance.

This work is very rewarding. Its seeing the bright light of learning sparkle in a

childs eye. Its seeing the smile that shows were

making school a little more funand a child feel a

little more comfortable in a learning environment. Its

learning that test scores have risen and knowing we

played a role. There are lots of rewards, both big and

small, for those who get involved. Wont you join us?
