14

PET Bottle needs just 17% energy to produce when compared to Glass Container

Glass manufacturing : ~ 1600C

Made from Soda Ash, Dolomite, Limestone, Silica Sand , cullets etc.

Sand Mining : Hazardous Silicosis : thousands infected every year

PET Bottle production is ~ 275C

Made from PET resin

Safe and Clean Process

Honorable Supreme Court recently banned PetCoke as fuel Glass Bottle producers used it widely 15

PET Bottles help cut Emissions from transport by ~30% when compared to Glass

PET Bottle of 180 mL weighs just ~ 8% of a similar glass bottle

~ 30% more litres of Liquor can be transported in same truck in the case of PET

This helps cut Diesel Emissions , which aggravate presence of particles in Air

Savings in transport costs add to bottom line and help make switching from glass to PET sustainable

16

PET helps cut down Deforestation

A higher Ply Corrugated Box is required for Glass Bottle

Partitions required to avoid breaking of glass by impact

Cardboard needs Paper:For every 1 MT paper, 17 Trees are cutFor every 1 MT paper, 25,000 litres of water is required

A lesser ply corrugated box is fine with PET Bottles

Partitions not required as PET is unbreakable

Final product can be shrink-packed to save secondary packaging cost (though not a prevalent practice)

17

PET helps free up space for value added activities

- Same amount of liquor can be stored in a space about 30% less in area when packed in PET

- This reduces warehouse costs

- It frees up space for other value added work

18

PET helps avoid wastage of most precious resource : WATER

PET helps cut down water consumption for washing bottles drastically With air-washing / clean room / In-house Blowing , water use for washing can be stopped 19

Indian Sugarcane Production = 356 mn MT

Water requirement per MT of Sugarcane = 88,000 litres (source: ISMA)

Total Sugarcane crop water requirement = 31 bn litres

1 case of liquor packed in glass bottle requires average 20 litres water for washing

For every 50 mn cases of liquor switched from glass to PET, 1 bn litre water is saved annually

Liquor in PET bottles 250 mn cases. 5 bn litre water saved

PET helps in efficient use of Water usage

20

Size of Market ( Country Liquor & IMFL) : 50 lac cases per month

Water required for washing per case for Glass Bottles : 20 litres

Water required per annum for washing : 20 L x 50 lac x 12 months = 120 cr litres

Water requirement per Kg of Sugarcane Plant Crop = 88 L(source: ISMA)

120 cr L water meets needs of 136 MMT of sugarcane cultivationIn case of PET , water

requirement can be cut down drastically

All India Sugarcane Production (2014-15) : 356 mn TonnePET bottles can be air-washed / PET

can also be supplied from plants with Clean Room eliminating water

needs totally for washing

23

Frosted PET Bottle Opportunity for Vodka packing

Frosting of Glass Bottles is generally done by third party thus requiring multiple handling points and increased breakages

Frosted glass Bottles are one time use and hence Glass Frosting is expensive

Various suppliers of FDA have approved Frost Master batch in case of PET now Clariant , Polyone , others

This can cut down cost and add value to the White Spirit packed

24

Handling Glass is an occupational hazard

Noise levels can be cut down by half while bottling in PET

Helps protect auditory system of workers

Breaking of glass bottles while handling causes injuries to workers

Sometimes, the injuries can get lethal

Silicosis is dreaded disease which reduces capability to breathe

~ 30 lac Indian population is affected due to handling of silica sands

Silica sand is key ingredient for glass bottle25

TERI findings on Post Consumer Carton recycling

26

Lack of identifiable technology for layer separation

No proper collection/recycling units. People find it an easy way to let the packs get dumped/burnt

Currently ~30% of PCCs recycled in South East Asia

Leftovers in cartons attracts rodents (rats) and spoils the stored paper waste

Paper waste + cartons take 2-3 hours for processing. Only paper waste takes 15-20 min

Source - PCC recycling report by TERI, 2011

PCCs constitute ~7.37% of total waste paper collected

The average profit made by the kabadiwalas in collecting PCCS ranges between 0.5 to 0.7 Rs/kg

PCCs are sold to large scale paper waste dealers at the rate of 6 rupees a kilo

Multilayer paper carton has 5 to 7 layers. (Paper -75% & polyethylene, aluminium-25% by weight )

Separating layers of plastic , paper and aluminum is challenging and expensive

Cradle to Grave : Glass & Paper Cartons

Recycling Rates : 45 % Glass , 31% Brick cartons, , 90% PET : PET PROMOTES CIRCULAR ECONOMY 27

PET Recycling : A Boon for circular economy

28

PET for Sustainability

29

Over 90% of our packaging (by weight) is made from glass, the report reads. However, we are increasing the use ofalternative materials and formats as part of our innovation agenda. PET bottles, plastic closures, Tetra Pak cartons, multilayer pouches, sachets and other small formats all use plastics, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) andpolypropylene (PP).

Using PET instead of glass can provide sustainability benefits, for example by reducing the weight of packaging andassociated carbon emissions from transport.

India recycles close to 700 KT of PET

RIL recycles ~ 50 KT per annum

34

Environment Benefits PET

35

1. The Life Cycle Energy and GHG emissions are the least in PET compared to alternates.

2. PET bottle weights have come down by 58% from 1989-2009 compared to Glass by

11 % from 2000-2012 with potential of breakage.

3. Glass packaging requires 12 times more packaging by weight compared to PET

4. In India, about 40% of perishables are lost during transit. PET/Plastics help to reduce

these transit losses.

Due to reverse logistics of glass bottles, the actual transportation GHG footprints would be higher in India
