Black Health Matters MARCH 2018 Welcome, Shane Hervey! We are committed to supporting and encouraging young black doctors and medical students however we can. Earlier this year we had the opportunity to put that commitment into practice by inviting Shane Hervey, a first year medical student at OHSU, to do his clinical preceptorship here at NxNE. Raised and educated in both Portland and Orange County, Shane calls himself a California-Oregon hybrid. After graduating from the University of Oregon in 2015, he moved back to California to be close to family and to test his commitment to becoming a physi- cian, as he says, “to be sure that this was a commitment I was willing to make, not only for me but for my future patients.” He spent a year in California scribing in an emergency department, working as a physical therapy aide at an outpatient clinic and assuming a leadership role in Orange County’s first ever needle exchange pro- gram. This work confirmed his commitment to becom- ing a physician, and he was thrilled to be accepted to OHSU School of Medicine. During his first week back in Portland and with his white coat ceremony (the offi- cial “welcome” into medical school) looming, Shane realized he needed a haircut and stopped by Terrell Brandon’s Barbershop on Alberta. On his way out the door he saw a basket of NxNE’s “Black Health Matters” buttons on the front counter. He did a quick Google search, walked a few blocks down the street and the next thing he knew he was walking through our front door and getting a warm NxNE greeting from Marlet and Dr. Jill. When it came time to choose a preceptor- ship location, Shane knew without a doubt he wanted to be here at NxNE. He says, “Just like the rest of the country, Portland’s African American community is overlooked when it comes to healthcare. As a black man in medicine, I wanted to be able to interact with my people. I also knew that the environment at NxNE would be ideal for an early medical student like myself to be both challenged and nurtured. Monday afternoons at NxNE are easily one of the best parts of my week. Dr. Jill has been an incredible teacher and mentor, and several of her patients have told me that I’m learning from the best physician that they’ve ever had. One thing that still surprises me is how often patients share about the negative experiences they’ve had with other clin- ics or providers. It’s so frustrating to hear about how patients are not treated with the respect they deserve. In contrast, it is beautiful to see the NxNE staff greet patients with a hug while providing effective, efficient and compassionate healthcare.” As for what’s next, Shane says, “Whether I end up as a surgeon, family medicine or emergency room physi- cian, I know that I want to work with the underserved, mentor underrepresented youth in their pursuit of med- icine, and get involved with health policy to combat the systemic flaws that are causing the inequitable distribution of healthcare across the country. I’m truly blessed and very thankful to Dr. Jill, the NxNE family, my mom, Jon, Kelley, my friends, family, teachers and mentors; I wouldn’t be here without all their support.” Shane Hervey with NxNE Board Chair Charlene McGee “I’m so glad North by Northeast stayed in my neighborhood. There’s hope on this corner.” - a patient

Black Health Matters

MARCH2018

Welcome, Shane Hervey!

After graduating from the University of Oregon in 2015, he moved back to California to be close to family and to test his commitment to becoming a physi-cian, as he says, “to be sure that this was a commitment I was willing to make, not only for me but for my future patients.” He spent a year in California scribing in an emergency department, working as a physical therapy aide at an outpatient clinic and assuming a leadership role in Orange County’s first ever needle exchange pro-gram. This work confirmed his commitment to becom-ing a physician, and he was thrilled to be accepted to OHSU School of Medicine. During his first week back in Portland and with his white coat ceremony (the offi-cial “welcome” into medical school) looming, Shane

realized he needed a haircut and stopped by Terrell Brandon’s Barbershop on Alberta. On his way out the door he saw a basket of NxNE’s “Black Health Matters” buttons on the front counter. He did a quick Google search, walked a few blocks down the street and the next thing he knew he was walking through our front door and getting a warm NxNE greeting from Marlet and Dr. Jill. When it came time to choose a preceptor-ship location, Shane knew without a doubt he wanted to be here at NxNE. Dr. Jill has been an incredible teacher and mentor, and several of her patients have told me that I’m learning from the best physician that they’ve ever had. A New Cuts & ChecksTM Partnership We’ve long been fans of Jamaal and Christina Lane, and their Champions Barbershop, one of the first partner barbershops in our Cuts & ChecksTM program. When Christina & Jamaal made their dream of opening a barbering school a real-ity last year, we started talking about how we could take our partnership to the next level...and so was born the Cuts & ChecksTM Scholarship for Student Barbers program, the first partnership of its kind in the country! Our goal is to help revive the historical connection between barbering and health by training professional barbers who will incorporate awareness of community health issues into their practice. Thanks to funding from Kaiser Permanente, two Champions Barbering Institute students will receive generous scholarships toward their tuition and fees, a portable blood pressure machine, and community health training from NxNE staff during their 10-month barbering training. Thank you to Champions Barbering Institute and Kaiser Permanente for their outstanding partnership in developing this innovative program. If you would like to contribute to the Cuts and ChecksTM scholarship fund, please contact Suzy Jeffreys at [email protected] or make a note on your donation envelope.

We had so much fun and success at last year’s Community Supper, we’re doing it again! Please join us on Saturday, June 2, for a celebration on the Columbia River, where we’ll gather with friends, share a delicious meal and have a ton of fun – all for the benefit of advancing health equity in our community.

Terrance “Cool Nutz” Scott will be our emcee for the evening, so you know we’re going to have a good time! The night will begin with a cocktail hour, where you’ll have the chance to purchase raffle tickets, mystery boxes filled with gift certificates, and wine from the wine wall. During dinner, you’ll hear stories about North by Northeast’s work and impact, and be able to participate in a live auction. When we are full, happy and inspired, we’ll end the night with mingling, dancing and music from Andrew Clay and Ocean 503.

This event is all about celebrating our community, and we want everyone to be a part of the fun, so we’re offering special tickets for our clients, along with a shuttle service. To learn more, contact Suzy Jeffreys at [email protected] or 503 946-6380.

We sold out last year, so buy your ticket soon. We hope to see you all there!
