Key insights on diversity

• Teams and organizations whose members are heterogeneous in meaningful ways have a higher potential for innovation than homogeneous teams

• More women among scientific decision makers would enhance the robustness of the decisions made due to an increase in the diversity of viewpoints.

• Where creativity is required and where the problems are complex enough, diversity is typically beneficial.

• Diversity in the scientific system and in the R&I marketplace offers an competitive advantage for strengthening the scientific endeavour through more effective deployment of the female human capital.

• Diversity assists in the development of new economic opportunities by widening the experiences and expertise brought to creating innovation and to identifying and understanding new markets.

Gender Equality in NCCR: Ambitions I

High standard gender equality

• Autonomy

• Innovative and field-specific gender equality strategy and action plan

• Review process

• Networking among NCCR - joint workshops, NCCR gender platform meeting 2015, Gender in Physics Day 2017, etc.

Page 13: Welcome []SNSF Welcome NCCR MUST/RESOLV Gender and Science Meeting 13-14 September, ETH Zürich Angelika Kalt, Director SNSF 18.09.17 1 Knowledge is the key to the future.

SNSF

Gender Equality in NCCR: Ambitions II

Long-lasting structures

• Up to 3 x 4-years funding by SNSF

• Research capacities - NCCR SYNAPSY: 6 new women professors in 3

years

• Educational and training structures - NCCR MUST and NCCR Bioinspired

Materials with awards / fellowship programs for women

• Transdisciplinary co-operations - NCCR MUST women scientist network

SNSF

Gender Equality in NCCR: Ambitions III

Broader impact beyond NCCR

• Towards home institutions - NCCR MUST women professors forum, Women in science networks (Lac Lémanique)

• Towards scientific community - NCCR Planet S raising awareness in academia measures

• Towards society

• Feedback towards the SNSF

Evaluation of NCCRs

Gender equality = 1 of multiple criteria for the competitive distribution of funds

Criteria: Quality of research, strategies (KTT, education & training, equal opportunity, communication), leadership, structural impact

Selection process: two-stage, the gender dimensions are considered in both stages

Evaluation of running NCCRs: gender dimensions play a role at all stages

SNSF

Gender Equality in NCCRs - dimensions

• Gender-supporting structures (work-life balance)

• Gender awareness (e.g. female role models, mentoring)

• Gender balanced allocations of resources (e.g. grants for female researchers)

• Gender balanced organisation (e.g. gender balanced decision making)

Exerpt from the presentation by Dr. Anna Garry, NCCR MUST, ETH Zürich at the Gender in Physics Day, Geneva,26 January 2017

What did MUST do?• Consulted the gender experts at ETH Zürich and University

of Zürich

• International research findings on gender for Physics and Chemistry

• Consulted our women scientists on their career needs and challenges

• Identified a key debate: “fix the women” versus “change the institutions”
