K-State Online

• You can see how many points you received on each assignment on K-State online.

• We take all the curves into account at the end of the semester; these will not be shown in KSOL.

What you need for lecture

• iClicker

• Notebook

• Math Journal

• Writing implement

• Brain

• A power switch on your phone.

=

• a = b

• a is identical in value to b

• Anywhere I see an ‘a’ I can replace it with a ‘(b)’ and vice versa

• Ex: a+6=b/7

7(a+6)-3b/7=b/14

!Ex (not example):

2+7=9*2=18

This is bad because it says that 2+7 is identical in value to 9*2 or that anywhere I see a 2+7, I can write a (9*2), which is not true.

f(x)

“eff of eks”

The result of doing f to x

If you have an “input” value x, and you “do f” to it, the value you get out is called f(x)

)(xfxf

)2(2 ff

function

A rule that assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element from the range

Something that you do to a number. When you do something to a number, the result is one number. You don’t get multiple results.

Ex: f(x)=2x-7

f(3.1)

Imagine x=3.1, use meaning of =

f(3.1)=2*(3.1)-7

Page 14: WELCOME!!! Studio College Algebra Fall 2010

function

!Ex:

This gives more than one “result” when you “plug in” a value for x.

Given the function f(x)=x2 -2Mx, where M is some parameter, find f(3).

A) 3

B) 3M

C) 9-6M

D) 6-9M

E) None of the above.

Page 16: WELCOME!!! Studio College Algebra Fall 2010

solution

• f(x)=x^2-2Mx

• x=3

• f(3)=3^2-2M3

• f(3)=9-6M

Page 17: WELCOME!!! Studio College Algebra Fall 2010

Domain

• All numbers that it makes sense to use as an input

• Ex: g(k)=k^2+7– Domain is all real numbers

• Ex:– In order for this to make sense

so the domain is

Page 18: WELCOME!!! Studio College Algebra Fall 2010

Range

• All the numbers that it makes sense to get as a result of doing the function (as outputs)

• Ex:

3)( :is range The

Line

• f(x)=mx+b

• Y-intercept is f(0)=m*0+b=b.

slope

• Fancy way of saying that if you change x by any amount, the change in y is always m times as big as the change in x.

Find the slope of the line connecting the points (2,3) and (4,8).
