CHURCH ETIQUETTE

The sanctuary of a Catholic Church is a sacred space dedi-

cated to the worship of God. It is a place of prayer where

people speak to their God and God speaks to God’s people. It

is a place for personal and communal prayer. A church is

not a theater, not a stadium, not an auditorium; it is God’s

House. Therefore, those who enter it must conduct them-

selves appropriately. Over the next few weeks, we will dis-

cuss in this space the various ways of respecting and rever-

encing the House of God. It is always good to review occa-

sionally some of the habits we are expected to practice when

the Lord invites us to join one another around His Table.

My dear Parishioners,

Ever since the year 2000, this Second Sunday of Easter has

also been called “Divine Mercy Sunday.” Pope St. John Paul

II declared it such on April 30th of that year, the day he can-

onized St. Faustina, a Polish Sister who had received a num-

ber of revelations from Christ. In one beautiful revelation,

the Risen Christ appeared to Faustina with two rays of light

shining from his heart one representing his blood and the

other, the water that flowed from his side when it was

pierced on the cross. In the Gospel of John, which the

Church uses throughout the Easter season, the blood symbol-

izes the gift of the Eucharist and the water, Baptism and the

gift of the Spirit. A beautiful painting of this image, which

usually hangs in the former baptismal chapel, is displayed in

our Sanctuary this Sunday.

The Church has celebrated Divine Mercy long before the

year 2000; it is evident in practically every prayer we offer

especially during Mass. Sacred Scripture is replete with sto-

ries of God’s unending mercy toward the human family. The

greatest need of humanity is for mercy — God’s mercy, cer-

tainly, but also for the mercy we extend to one another. To-

day comes as a powerful reminder of our responsibility as

recipients of God’s mercy to be ministers of mercy our-

selves. What a wonderful world it would be if all of us took

our responsibility seriously! No better time to start than in

this Jubilee Year of Mercy when we are called to “Be Merci-

ful as Your Heavenly Father.” — Fr. Jerome, C.P.

Thank you… On behalf of my sister in law Angela, my

nephew Aron, my sibling’s and me, I wish

to express my heart felt appreciation for the

many acts of kindness, love, and support

shown by our parish family here at Saint Paul of

the Cross over the loss of my brother Herschel.

It is comforting to know he was loved

and respected by so many. Words cannot express how it was

to walk into a packed church and feel and see the love and

support. My brother strove to bring people together in life; it

was a tribute to him to see his success. “Blessed are the peace

makers…” Much love to you all.
