LORI AJLOUNY2017-20 - WSU graduate with over 30 years in education, Ajlouny is also a Groves alumnae. A longtime resident of Birmingham, she lives with her husband, Mick

Pilles, and their four children. She has served on a variety of committees, including Diversity Committee, curriculum committees, SALT, School Improvement Committee, District Math and Social Studies committees and Strategic Planning Committee. She and her family enjoy traveling and spending quality time together.

AMY HOCHKAMMER 2019-25 - BA - Lawrence University. Amy is retired from Morgan Stanley after spending more than 20 years in the finance industry. She is an enthusiastic volunteer and her experience extends

throughout BPS and the community. She served as President of the BPS PTA Council, President of Seaholm High School PTA, and as Chair of the Birmingham Family YMCA Board of Managers.

BRIAN JENNINGS2017-20 - Attended Ferris State University and EMU. A licensed builder, Jennings runs his own building and development company.

Board of Education Jennings has served as the assistant football coach for Seaholm High School, is a former vice-president of the Quarton PTA and currently serves as a Bloomfield Hills Delegate. He and his wife, Nadine, have been married

for 24 years and have four children.

NICOLE MCKINNEY 2019-25 - BA inM a n a g e m e n t a n d O r g a n i z a t i o n a l Development and MA in Business Administration. She is a graduate of the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Leadership Detroit Class. McKinney is a work-based learning director at United Way for Southeastern Michigan. She served on the Greenfield PTA as Legislative Chair and has one son in Birmingham Public Schools.

JENNIFER RASS 2019-25 - EMU graduate, Rass has more than 25 y e a r s o f C o r p o r a t e Communications, Public Relations and Business Operations experience. She is a past PTA President,

Reflections chair and room parent. She also serves as a Birmingham Education Foundation trustee, Board Member and Walk Chair for Juvenile

Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). She lives in Beverly Hills with her husband and two children.

KIMBERLY WHITMAN 2017-22 - U-M graduate and CPA, Whitman has spent her entire career in the professional services industry. Having served in both CPA and Human Resources capacit ies , Whitman brings a unique perspective to the Board. She has been an active school volunteer, serving as a trustee of the Birmingham Education Foundation and a PTA officer. Kimberly has served the board as Treasurer and currently serves as President. She and her husband, Alan, have two children in the district.

ADRIENNE YOUNG 2017-22 - University of Chicago Law School graduate, Young serves the state as an appellate defense attorney at the State Appellate Defender Office. Young has also

served as a clerk on the Michigan Supreme Court. She received her B.A. in Sociology and Political Science from U-M and went on to join Teach For America and earned her Master of Education in Special Education while teaching. Young and her husband, Jeffrey Bozell, spend their free time with their growing family.

Greetings We are pleased to welcome you to a meeting of the Birmingham Public Schools Board of Education. Your attendance shows you care about education and take an interest in your local schools. We ask visitors to please sign the attendance sheet. Your presence will be noted in the official minutes of the meeting. This brochure is provided to guide you through the meeting and help you communicate with the board. Thank you for joining us.

On the agenda Agendas are provided at the board meeting. Agendas may be picked up in advance at the Birmingham Education and Administration Center on the day of the meeting. Agendas are also posted on the BPS website (www.birmingham.k12.mi.us) the Friday before the board meeting.

How we are elected The board consists of seven school district residents who serve overlapping terms of four years each. Any registered

voter who lives in the BPS district may vote in school elections. Trustees serve without compensation except for reimbursement of expenses.

Public input The board values this opportunity to listen to the concerns of parents, students and other community members. All regular meetings of the Board of Education include public comments. If you wish to speak at a board meeting, please fill out a Request to Comment card and hand it to the board assistant before the public comments section of the meeting is concluded. Please limit your remarks to three minutes. You may speak without submitting a card by raising your hand. If you prefer, you may express your concerns by letter. Please include all essential information. Each trustee receives a copy of every letter. You may also call 248-203-3004 to leave a voice mail message for board members. The telephone message is transcribed and delivered to all trustees.

What we do As trustees of the BPS district, we are responsible for setting educational policies consistent with state and federal laws governing public education. As representatives of the electorate, we provide programs which meet the

educational objectives of the community. In addition, we are responsible for the district’s resources. We also serve as a board of appeals. Individually and as a board, we work as concerned citizens for the improvement of public schools. A quorum of four board members is needed to conduct official school district business. The superintendent and administrative staff are present at board meetings to provide reports and background information. Minutes are recorded at every meeting. Proposed minutes are available within eight business days after the meeting. Approved minutes are available within five days after the meeting in which the board approves them and are posted on our website.

Our meetings Study Sessions are generally held the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 a.m. and Board meetings the third Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Evergreen Room of the BPS Education and Administration Center. When a special meeting is necessary, public notice is given at least eighteen hours prior to the meeting.

Meetings of the board are open to the public except those specifically exempted by law. By law, closed sessions may be called to discuss certain personnel actions, student discipline cases, contract negotiations, some property transactions and for consultation with attorneys on pending litigation. Meetings are televised on Channel 17 and available to view on the BPS website.
