SERMON NOTES

The Beginning of the End Galatians 5:2-12

You must choose: ______ _____ __________ or _______ _____.

Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. Romans 10:1-4 (ESV)

______ is the answer.

Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. Romans 13:8-10 (ESV)

Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” Luke 7:47 (ESV)

And [Jesus] said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37-40 (ESV)

________ ____________ is critically important!

Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. Matthew 18:6 (ESV)

Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. James 3:1 (ESV)

________ __________ by ______________ and ______________.

We preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles. 1 Corinthians 1:23 (ESV)

Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 2 Timothy 4:2-4 (ESV)

Next Week: Galatians 5:13-26

CONNECT QUESTIONS

Breaking Ground

1. Our parents, friends, teachers, and mentors gave us words and stories of wisdom in order to help us live well as we grew up. What are some words or stories of wisdom that have shaped the way you act today?

2. What has stuck? During the past 7 weeks of studying Galatians, what have you heard or learned that stuck with you, impacted your thoughts, actions or behaviors? What is stuck? What gives you pause, more questions than not, or just doesn’t make sense?

Digging Deeper

1. Read Galatians 5:2-12. Underline a statement that speaks to you. What do you think or feel about that statement? Does it affirm, convict, encourage or challenge you? Explain.

2. In Galatians 5:2-6, Paul passionately reminds the Galatians that they should not trust in salvation based on outward religious acts like circumcision. How do some Christians today misplace the base of their salvation? Do you do this in any way?

3. In Galatians 5:6, Paul states, “The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.” Is faith something that you have, a noun? Or, is faith something you do, a verb? Read Hebrews 11:2-39, often labeled as the “Hall of Fame of the Faithful.” Select one of the faithful individuals named; reflect on their actions. Identify characteristics of faith expressed through love. What, if anything, keeps those characteristics from being present in your life?

4. Read Galatians 5:7-12. Paul uses the analogy of running a good race. Think of a time when you ran, walked, or watched a race. Read 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, 1 Timothy 6:12, 2 Timothy 4:7. What are key components of running a “good” race or fighting a “good” fight? What words best describe your race?

Get Growing

1. Identify one “random act of kindness” that you can do this week as an example of living your faith in love. Just do it!

2. As you reflect on your spiritual journey, list 1 or 2 specific actions you need to take to move closer to describing your journey as “running a good race?”

We’re glad you are here today! Please fill out a Communication Card (located in the folders in front of you) and place it in the offering plate later in the service.

This card helps us get to know you and minister to you. Visit our Welcome Table in the back foyer for church information.

The Prayer Request Book and Bibles are located

at the back of the sanctuary.
