Welcome to APUSH!
TC Central--2014/15K. Brunink
Historical Perspectives
0Respond to the following prompts…you should choose a side and provide evidence for your argument.
0Share and discuss your argument with someone next to you.
Should we celebrate Columbus Day?
The United States has traditionally practiced isolationism for the majority
of our history.
Many American voices are often ignored in American History Courses.
What is the most important reason to learn about history?
Introductions0Ms. Brunink02nd year teaching @ Central0Taught/lived in CO beforehand0Grew up in Northern MI0B.A.—Psychology/International Development0M.A.—Secondary ED—Social Studies, emphasis in
political science, minor in history. 0Questions?
Your turn…
0Name0Something about you0Why are you taking APUSH? 0Favorite historical moment? 0Something you really want to know more
about.
Course Expectations
Advanced Placement is not for you if…
0You are allergic to hard work0You’d rather whine than win0You miss a lot of school days0You are already overloaded with after school
job, sports, activities, social life, etc.
Advanced Placement is for you if…
0You are competitive0You are not afraid of hard work0You are willing to learn how to manage your work
load and schedule0You want to possibly earn college credit0You want to be ready to conquer college0You want to improve your ACT test scores
What you’ll need…
NOT
Classroom stuff…0This is a college course…but you are high school
students. I try to balance those two realities as much as possible.
0The APUSH course has just been revised considerably…I request that you are patient and flexible. I promise to work hard to make this a positive experience for you.
0Be considerate of each other’s views 0Don’t be a downer
Food in the classroom…0Your brain needs food…you
should eat when you need to.0 I do not like cleaning up after
people who will soon be attending college, working, voting, driving, etc…
0Please don’t make my room smell like fast food (especially Taco Bell.) That’s gross.
0Red Bull for breakfast is bad for you.
Attendance 0 Be here0 “Did I miss anything” :/0 CHECK WEBSITE! 0 If you miss a class, all
work/tests are due to be made up the following day unless prearranged with me.
0 I get irritated quickly if you are repeatedly absent test/quiz days. Irritated Ms. Brunink=harder tests and quizzes for everyone.
Cheating and Plaigarism
0 Don’t.0 It reflects poor character
and establishes a bad habit…you are in the process of forming life habits so choose wisely.
0 You are all better than that.0 Consequences are serious
in this class. 0 It makes me very sad…
seriously I loose sleep.
Don’t be a social loafer. Bring something to the table…again good v. bad habits.
0 Identify with one of the following…0 Yes! Groupwork. I don’t
have to do anything. 0 Ugh! Groupwork. I’m
going to do everything. 0 Yes! I love working with
others. 0 Ugh! I don’t like other
humans.
Late Policy—excuse vs. reason• Do your homework…if
you didn’t just own up…Excuses make you sound silly.
• However, I am flexible…advocate for yourself…talk to me in advance and we will 99% of the time be able to work something out…as long as you haven’t already burnt bridges with excuses.
• 10%/ day deduction…50% deduction after two days.
Extra credit…a strange drug for HS students
Cell Phones—love and hate
0 I struggle with this classroom policy…to the point that I’ve researched the topic considerably over the summer.
0Let’s chat about what will work for all of us.
Pay Attention when Others are Talking…

0Questions about course, expectations, etc…?
History is Controversial
Oftentimes Ugly
Controversy in the Study of History
In this class we will discuss some topics and ideas about which you may disagree, no matter what your religion or background may be. When that happens, try to remember that while you do have to learn this information, you do not have to take it to heart, nor do you have to believe the information. Topics like race and religion are integral to History, but we must all try to be sensitive to the individual views of others. This does not mean we cannot discuss these issues, but it does mean that we will always try to approach these issues with respect. You will probably encounter beliefs and ideas that seem strange to you, and my goal is to approach these ideas academically. If you are really troubled by a topic, come talk to me and we will try to figure something out. In my class I hope you will learn critical thinking. My job is not to teach you what to believe, but to give you the tools to find the answers for yourself. Hopefully, you will become a critical consumer of information.
