U-NITES! EVENT ORIENTATION AMBASSADOR EVENT WELCOME BACK FESTIVAL GRADUATION
Welcome Clemson Families,
Congratulations on your student being accepted to Clemson University. By choosing to attend Clemson University, you are now a member of the Parents Council, and we are equally excited to welcome you into the Clemson Family. I use the word family because that is something you will hear time and again when speaking with others about our University. I trust you and your student will come to enjoy Clemson as an integral part of your lives, just as my wife and I have. Clemson students are consistently ranked as some of the happiest students in the country, which is in part because of the family support we strive to provide through fellow students, faculty, staff and alumni.
The Parents Council is funded by and operates under the Clemson University Division of Student Affairs. Being involved in the Parents Council offers numerous volunteer opportunities throughout the year including Fall Family Weekend, Spring Family Reunion, Move-In Day, High School Outreach, the Letter Writing Campaign, an Advisory Board and more.
Our students’ families are what makes Clemson so great. Personally, we have enjoyed the opportunities Parents Council has provided us to engage with the Clemson community. We hope your experience and that of your student will be as rewarding as it has been for our daughter and ourselves.
Please visit clemson.edu/parents for more information on how to become more involved.
We look forward to meeting you!

MONTH TIPS• Have you purchased your tickets
for Fall Family Weekend 2017 yet? It is right around the corner! Be sure to get your tickets at clemson.edu/parents.
• Families can have a significant influence on their student’s decisions when it comes to alcohol use. Take the initiative to have open communication with your student about friends, roommates and weekend activities. It is important to continue these conversations throughout the school year. For help talking with your student about alcohol, visit clemson.edu/alcohol.
• Making new friends in college is exciting! Be sure to encourage your student to attend the Kick-Off Clemson events to meet new people. There are a variety of events to connect with other students, clubs, organizations and the local community. Check out the schedule by downloading the “Clemson Events” app and the Kick-Off Clemson Guide at guidebook.com/app/clemson.
• Clemson provides free evening transit service on campus seven days a week from 6 p.m.–6 a.m. Your student can request the Tiger Transit service by calling 864-656-3333 or through the “my.Clemson” app.

• Academics look very different from high school to college. There are
fewer assignments, which may impact grades. Remind your student of the resources they can use throughout the semester such as those provided by the Academic Success Center.
• When students begin college, they are adjusting to their new freedom and schedules. You may see a change in how often they communicate as they begin to find their place at Clemson.
• Getting comfortable in a new setting takes time. Encourage your student to get out and explore campus,
meet new people and exercise their independence.
• Cooper Library is open 24 hours a day beginning at 10 a.m. on Sunday. We close on Friday at 8 p.m. Saturday hours are 10 a.m.–8 p.m. Students can check out a study room or use one of our other comfortable study spaces.

MONTH TIPS• Flu season begins as early as October. Encourage your student to get the flu vaccine now, as it takes about two weeks to build up
immunity. Flu shots are available at Redfern Health Center.
• Around this time of year, relationships can cause increased anxiety. The “honeymoon” stage of roommates or friendships may be over, and students may find themselves in some disagreements. Encourage your student to work with their Resident Assistant (RA) if they get into an uncomfortable roommate situation.
• Be alert to emotional changes in your student that may reflect signs of depression or anxiety. Many things could cause these changes, and for some, they may lead to increased alcohol and/or drug use. Learn more about mental health by visiting clemson.edu/studenthealth and be willing to talk with your student.
• Become familiar with the academic calendar and use it to guide conversation with your student.
Ask them now about their classes. October is midterm month, and they should have a good gauge on how they are doing with their studies.

MONTH TIPS• As course registration begins for
spring semester, ask your student if they are considering a Creative Inquiry course or studying abroad. These are great opportunities for your student to enhance their
college experience.
• Going home for the break is always an exciting time for students to reconnect with family and friends. Be sure to talk through your expectations of one another to
deviate any potential issues as the Thanksgiving and Winter Break are coming up.
• Talk to your student about their plans for future semesters in terms of classes, study abroad, and co-op
and internship opportunities. Ask them if they are thinking about changing their major or adding a minor to their studies. A semester or summer abroad can often be part of your tuition payments and not require extra payments.
• We are embarking on finals time. Encourage your student to prepare well and avoid the temptation of misusing prescription drugs with the impression it will help them concentrate. Remind your student to get enough sleep, exercise, eat well and prioritize tasks. To learn more, visit clemson.edu/healthy-campus.

• When leaving for home, it is crucial that students unplug all appliances, turn off lights and lock the door to their residence hall room or home.
• Your student’s final grades are out. December will be a great time to
encourage your student to reevaluate their study and time management
habits or to seek extra help in the Academic Success Center in the
upcoming semester, if needed.
• College provides a great opportunity to meet and work with all different types of people. Encourage
your student to explore diverse relationships and promote an open

to secure aid for the next academic year. It is recommended to complete the FAFSA soon after January 1 to ensure the maximum award. The
priority deadline is March 1.
• There are a variety of spring break opportunities available to Clemson students. If your student is looking for a unique experience, have them check out one of the Alternative
Break Projects across the United States or a trip with Clemson
Outdoor Recreation and Education (CORE).
• The Academic Success Center offers great workshops to help students start off strong at the beginning of the semester — the list of options can be found on their website!

belongings if their new lease does not begin when their current one ends.

point ratio (MCGPR) requirements for enrollment are based on a student’s credit load. Consult the Undergraduate Announcements for MCGPR requirements.
• Students may have feelings of anxiety attached to the idea of going home for the summer and losing their new-found sense of freedom. It is important to have discussions about what life will be like back in the house and set clear expectations. Will they have the same rules as before? Will they need to check in when going somewhere?
• If your student loves the outdoors, have them check out some CORE recreation trips!

they thought they might need, i.e. magazine subscriptions, Netflix, etc. Discuss what could be eliminated and where budgets might be cut.
• Try not to take it personally if your student misses Clemson. Just as they missed you when they came to college, they will also miss their new friends while they are home. Don’t be surprised if you get visitors over the summer or if your student wants to visit a friend.

• While it is quiet, it is a good time to look over your student’s housing contracts for the fall. Become familiar with when your student can
move in, what they can and cannot bring, when payments are due, etc.
• Car issues can be challenging for students. This is a great time to get their vehicle serviced for oil changes, tire rotations and overall safety
