Super Organized Binder

• Students should bring S.O.S. binders to and from school each day.

• All homework should be written in the agenda/planner

• Please use the zipper pouch for any money or notes to me. Please make sure all money is bagged and labeled!

• Students are responsible for checking binders and taking care of the contents inside.

• Please remind students to empty binders throughout the week.

Balanced Literacy

• Integrate reading, writing, and word study.

• Whole group mini-lesson and small group instruction.

• Students will rotate through various literacy activities (Daily 5): read to self, read to someone, listen to reading, word work, work on writing

• During small group instruction we will also focus on the word study skills.

Word Study

• Word Journeys

• Differentiated- Students are working on skills that they need

• Weekly Activities: word sorts, chunk-chunk-blend, word building, word hunts, rhyming

• There will be no homework or spelling tests to study for

• Heavy use of manipulatives

– Moving students through the concrete, representational, and abstract stages of

learning

• Math Homework will usually come home Monday-Thursday (check the planner)

Science and Social Studies

We will be focusing on only one of these units at a time.

First quarter we will be learning about:

– Science: Investigations, Habitats

– S.S: Civics, Maps & Globes, Citizenship

*Students will be assessed by projects/tests.

*Study guides will be sent home for some units.

Homework

• Read at least 20 minutes each night

• Math worksheet

• Review science/social studies study guide

(when sent home)

• No homework will be given over the weekends

Celebrations

• Due to food allergies, students are not allowed to bring in edible birthday treats for birthdays. You may, however, eat lunch with your child (12:30-1:00)

• I would love to buy your child ice cream at the cafeteria for their birthday! Please let me know if you would prefer I not do this for your child and I will come up with an alternative

• Birthday party invitations are not allowed to be passed out at school per school policy. Refer to the PTO directory or our classroom directory for invites to be sent out.

– October 10th! – Half funded by STEM grant for Space Week!

• VA Living Museum – November

• Jamestown – May

Information will be sent home.

Miscellaneous

• Lunch Money

– Track your child’s account and make payments by registering at www.myschoolbucks.net

– If you would only like your child to get breakfast or a snack at school on certain days, you may send in a note to put a block on the account

• Bi-Weekly Newsletters • Monthly Scholastic Book Orders • Acceptable Use Policy

– If you checked no to the school website, I cannot use your child’s picture in my newsletters or Dojo as they are posted online. If you notice your child is covered or blocked out, that is why. If you would like to switch your stance on this let me know and I can send home another form!
