Mission: We the people of the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, seek to be an example of the presence of God through our Christian Catholic worship, education, service and stewardship of all God’s gifts. We celebrate our diversity of age, culture, language, and view points as a sign of God’s all powerful and ever-present love in our community of faith. We strive to witness the gospel of Jesus Christ to evangelize and to respond in love, as well as compassion to our community in Honolulu, to be a welcoming place to all who seek the grace, fellowship, and love of God. Deacon Francis Leasiolagi Welcome To Co-Cathedral of Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus June 2, 2019 The Ascension of the Lord ACTS 1:1-11 / EPH 1:17-23 / LK 24:46-53 The Feast of the Ascension – June 2, 2019 The Feast of the Ascension is a kind of liminal moment in the Easter season. It is a time between times; a moment when we have left one place in our journey but have not yet arrived at a second. Although the readings describe the ascension fit well into the unfolding story of redemption, the feast celebrates one aspect of the resurrection itself, namely, the exaltation of Jesus. The readings help us through this paradox. They allow us to focus on this theological point while we commemorate a turning point in the life of the Church. We do this by considering the enthronement of Christ in the heavens and the new body of Christ on earth. The Enthronement of Christ Many of the Easter accounts have directed our attention to the appearances of Jesus, which were intended to strengthen the Christians’ belief in his bodily resurrection. The emphasis was frequently on certain physical characteristics: he ate food, he invited Thomas to touch him. In many of these accounts Jesus seems to have been saying “I am the same one who walked with you before. This is the same body that you have always known.” Today we stand awestruck, watching Jesus ascend into the clouds of heaven, there to be enthroned at the right hand of God. Today is a day to be overwhelmed by the reality of the divinity of the one we have known in his humanity. Amidst shouts of joy and exaltation Christ is enthroned in heaven in both his divinity and his glorified humanity. Like the conquering creator-God, he has overcome his enemy (death) and now reigns over his new creation (Church). For our part, we live between the time of his departure and the time of his return. Today we rejoice in one aspect of his mystery, his triumphant ascension; soon we will celebrate the second, the coming of the Holy Spirit. Even though he has left us physically, we do not live without him as we wait. He is present with us in a new way, in a new body, in the Church. The New Body of Christ Christ who ascended into heaven in his body, carries on what he began on earth through his new body, the community of believers. He teaches through its apostles and evangelists. He ministers through its prophets and pastors, In and through the Church, Jesus continues to heal and to comfort; to forgive and to include. We have not been left alone; we have his power, the same power with which he performed marvels when he walked the earth. We have not been left alone; we have each other. Together we make up the new body of Christ. Together we await the fullness of this body. It is this new body that stands in between the times—secure in what we have, confident regarding what we will be given. Clergy Team Pastor Fr. Pentecost (“the fiftieth day”) is a Christian holiday commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles on the fiftieth day after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Apostles began to speak in many languages and have received other spiritual gifts. The event was foretold by Jesus before his Ascension.

In Christian tradition Pentecost is a moveable feast observed exactly seven weeks after Easter Day, i.e. 50 days after Easter (inclusive, 49 + Easter). It always falls on the seventh Sunday after Easter Day. In Eastern churches the date of Pentecost is calculated in the same manner but it usually differs due to the use of the Julian calendar instead of the Gregorian. Pentecost is a holy day of obligation in the Catholic Church.

Leo’s sermonsScholars believe that Pope Leo I’s Sermons 75–77 were given on Pentecost Sunday. In these sermons, dating to the 5th century, Leo discusses Macedonianism, which the Catholic Church denounced as heresy because it considered the Holy Spirit inferior to the Father and Son, thereby undermining the Trinity. He also denounces Manichean doctrine on the Holy Spirit, which taught that the Holy Spirit was present in Mani. Leo discusses other Catholic doctrine pertaining to the Holy Spirit, especially emphasizing the Spirit’s relationship to the Father and Son of the Trinity and the Catholic Church. He draws an analogy between Jewish practices and the Christian feast day: “As once to the Hebrew people, freed from Egypt, the law was given on Mt. Sinai on the fiftieth day after the sacrifice of the lamb, so after the Passion of the Christ when the true Lamb of God was killed, on the fiftieth day from his Resurrection, the Holy Spirit came down on the apostles and the community of believers.”[37] Leo calls this the Second Covenant and says that it is “established by the same Spirit who has set up the first”. He describes the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples on Pentecost as the fulfillment of a “long-awaited promise”.[37]

Bishop Larry Silva has appointed Fr. Gregorio Honorio, Jr. as the Diocesan Vicar for Clergy effective July 1, 2019.

Fr. Greg was ordained on Feb 10, 1995 in the Philippines. In 2000, he served in the Diocese of Ilagan, Philippines. He then served in the Diocese of Armidale-New South Wales, Australia and the Diocese of San Bernardino, California before coming to Hawaii. His first assignment was at St. Joseph Parish in Waipahu. He served as its pastor from 2008 to 2012. In 2013, Fr. Greg was appointed as Administrator of the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa. He was incardinated into the Diocese of Honolulu and eventually installed as pastor of

Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa on March 17, 2016. During these years, he has actively promoted and encouraged all of us to a life of Stewardship. His own life reflects God’s call to serve, not to be served. Let’s continue to pray for Fr. Greg as he embarks on his new role in the Diocese of Honolulu.

Fr. Greg will preside in all our Sunday (Saturday vigil) Masses on the weekend of June 29/30, 2019, which will mark his last official day in our parish. To celebrate his years of faithful service and leadership to our church and school, we will have a Thanksgiving dinner and program on June 28, 2019 (Friday) at 6:00PM, in the parish hall. Everyone is invited.

The Bishop has appointed Fr. Manuel (Manny) Hewe as the Pastor of Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, effective July 1, 2019.

Fr. Manny was ordained as a priest in 1997 (in the Philippines) and is the outgoing Diocesan Vicar for Clergy. He served as pastor at St. John Apostle and Evangelist Catholic Church from July 2007 to June 2011.

Fr. Manny will be formally installed as our pastor on July 7, 2019 (Sunday) at the 10:30AM Mass, to be presided by Bishop Larry Silva.

A lunch fellowship will follow after the Mass in the Parish Hall. We invite all ministry members as well as our parish family to welcome him on this day.

7th SUNDAY OF EASTER

Stewardship is based on the spiritual principles of the Old Testament and the teachings of Jesus. As Catholics, realizing all that we have is a gift from God, we are encouraged to reflect on our blessings, enhance them and share them with others. By giving of ourselves and helping those around us, we are practicing Christian stewardship.
