Highlights

1. We have a highly trained and caring staff, dedicated to helping students learn and grow. Students are encouraged to develop a sense of worth, responsibility, self- respect, and respect for others. Our student support services include: a social worker who is our Family School Liaison Worker and our First Nation Metis Inuit social worker, Emotional Behavioral Team, Braided Journeys and access to a Mental Health Therapist through the Regional Collaborative Service Delivery (RCSD).

2. Our complementary program has a wide variety of exciting courses designed to enhance our students’ experience.

3. Our school continues to be a leader in technology: We have 2 computer labs, smart board technology in every classroom, 7 Chromebook carts for classroom use, and document cameras. All teachers have Google classrooms where students can access information 24/7. Students have access to an extensive array of research and performance software. Assistive learning technology, on-line video resources, and high-speed internet complement our instruction. We continue to work with our students on digital citizenship, and awareness of limitations and safe online practices.

4. Tiger Pride is at the heart of our school spirit. Students and staff come together to celebrate through a variety of special events, sports and religious activities.

5. The Learning C o m m o n s /Library is a fabulous location that encourages students to select from a wide variety of reading resources. Students can choose from either English or French resources and can also access this center at lunch.

6. Students have access to a well-equipped fitness center that is supervised by teachers during physical education classes.

7. We have an excellent interschool sports program: volleyball, basketball, badminton, soccer, cross-country running, slo-pitch, curling, and track and field for both boys and girls. We offer a junior and a senior team in volleyball and basketball.

8. Our lunch hour intramural program is outstanding. Students are given the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sport activities.

9. We are blessed with a caring community that actively supports school policies, programs, and activities, and a School Council, which provides a valuable liaison between the school and our parent community.

A Parent’s Guide to the School/Home Partnership

The following are guidelines to help parents work in partnership with the school to guide the students

toward a more active, accountable, and responsible role in their own learning.

• It is imperative to sign up for PowerSchool; an online source that informs you of your son/daughter’s attendance, assignments, and marks.

• Support your child in their quest for personal excellence in all school activities.

• Inform the school of any health or learning problems your child may have.

• Send your child to school well rested and fed to help your child achieve their learning potential.

• Read the course outlines and evaluation information posted on PowerSchool for each class.

• Read the school newsletter that is on our website or a hard copy can be provided. Newsletters will also be emailed out to all parents.

• Review your child’s notebooks, assignments, and tests regularly.

• Ensure that your child has an assigned study time and space. One hour per day of study and review is recommended.

• Notify the school if your child is going to be absent. Students are expected to contact their homework buddy on each day of absence.

• Attend Celebration of Learning.

Programs At École St. Cecilia

1. Outstanding English Language Program

The academic program follows the requirements set by Alberta Education for grades 7-9 and is taught in

the English language. We offer a variety of complementary courses that enhance students’ learning as

well as provide students with practical knowledge and skills that will assist them in their daily lives and

help prepare them for High School.

2. French Immersion Program

Entry into this program is at the primary school level. École St. Cecilia Junior High is a continuation of

the elementary program. This program is designed to teach French to Anglophones where functional

bilingualism is the desired goal. In Immersion programs the student "lives" a significant part of the

school experience in the second language. Sixty-five percent (65%) of the program is taught in the

French language.

3. Division Accelerated Math and Science Focus Program

Entry into this program is at the junior high school level. The Accelerated Program is specifically

designed for students who are academically capable of completing grade seven, eight and nine

Mathematics and/or Science in two years rather than the traditional three years. It provides students

with the opportunity to pursue Math 10 Common and/or Science 10 in their Grade 9 Junior High school

year and earn high school credits. Course requirements are rigorous, and students are commonly

required to spend more time working outside of class than those students in the regular program.

4. Jean Forest All-Girls Leadership Academy

The Jean Forest All Girls Leadership Academy is an innovative, single gender Catholic school program for

junior high girls in Edmonton Catholic Schools. Entry into this program is at the junior high school level.

This program emphasizes faith, tradition, leadership, and academic excellence. Girls registered in this

program will be empowered, globally minded inquirers who will develop principles of learning to sustain

their personal growth.


French Immersion

WHY FRENCH IMMERSION AT ÉCOLE ST. CECILIA JUNIOR HIGH?

Our French immersion students are involved in many activities throughout

the school year. Some activities are designed to enhance their appreciation for

the French Language. A few examples are:

POURQUOI LA VISITE AU QUÉBEC? WHY DO OUR STUDENTS VISIT QUÉBEC?

French Cultural trip to ‘’la belle province de Québec’’ for Grade 8-9 students is a fantastic experience where

students are immersed in French culture through dance, drama, film, academic studies, athletic activities, and

spiritual dimensions.

Highlights of the trip include attending a cabane à sucre (sugar shack), visiting Montréal, touring historical sites

of Quebec City, activities with friends, a visit to the majestic Montmorency Falls and participating in Carnaval.

During their stay, students stay in hotels that are near points of interests. École St. Cecilia students gain

exceptional education and cultural experiences for lifelong memories while enriching their confidence in speaking

French.

Notre carnaval d'hiver à École St. Cecilia - Our Annual Winter Carnaval

• Our annual winter Carnaval is a fun way for students and staff to enjoy winter activities.

• The activities included are our own sugar shack where we pour maple syrup on snow, snowshoe

races, tug of war, learning to make music with wooden spoons, folk dance and cultural songs just

to name a few.

Science Olympiques – L’expo de science

Do you like experimenting and inventing things? A team of students participated in the APEGA Science

Olympics facing challenges as a team. During the day they successfully complete challenges such as building a

prosthetic leg from limited materials. The science expo is just one of many ways that students can celebrate and

extend their learning in a French immersion environment.

Fieldtrips to Cultural Destinations

Part of the French Immersion programming is to connect students to the greater French community within

Edmonton and Alberta. Over the years, students have visited French cultural destinations such as the Facultè St.

Jean, La Citè Francophone, as well attending concerts, and local restaurants such as La Creperie. These fieldtrips

are great opportunities for students to extend their knowledge of French Language and Culture as well as a way

for students to apply and use their language skills within authentic environments. The field trips allow students to

further develop their language skills to become more confident to pursue future career opportunities, studies and

travel.


Accelerated Math & Science Program at École St. Cecilia Junior High

WHY ACCELERATED MATH AND SCIENCE AT ÉCOLE ST. CECILIA JUNIOR HIGH?

Entry into this program is at the junior high school level. The Accelerated Program is specifically designed for

students who are academically capable of completing grade seven, eight and nine Mathematics and/or Science in

two years rather than the traditional three years. It provides students with the opportunity to pursue Math 10

ADMISSION CRITERIA

1. Prospective students must achieve an excellent* score on the Entrance Exam(s) based on the Grade 6 Learner outcomes and those outcomes extending into the Grade 7 Math and/or Science curriculum learner outcomes.

2. The student will have demonstrated overall “Exemplary” achievement in Math and/or Science in grade six according to the most recent report card.

3. The student’s past report cards will indicate not only academic ability, but also strong organization and work habits.

4. Potential students require a mature, positive attitude, exemplary classroom behavior and the ability to work independently

The Learning Team Coordinators, Accelerated Math/Science teachers and the school administration will review

each student’s application. Based on the ADMISSION CRITERIA, the top students will be chosen for the program.

The primary determining factor is the Entrance Exam.

CONTINUATION IN THE PROGRAM(S)

Student performance and program recommendations will be reviewed and made at each reporting period. To

ensure a student meets the Program of Studies learning requirements, any decision to have a student discontinue

in the program will be made at the end of the school year.

JEAN FOREST ALL-GIRLS LEDERSHIP ACCADEMY PHILOSOPHY

The faculty at Jean Forest Junior High Leadership Academy is committed to

educating each child intellectually, spiritually, socially, emotionally, and physically

by providing a variety of experiences as a foundation for learning. Parents are invited

COMPLEMENTARY COURSES FOR JUNIOR HIGH

Students in junior high school enjoy having some choice in terms of the complementary courses they take.

Complementary courses offered at École St. Cecilia School include courses in Fine and Performing arts and

Career and Technology Foundations (CTF).

At École St. Cecilia, instrumental music is a full year program. All other complementary courses are offered in

semesters that correspond with the reporting periods. This provides students with a choice in their elective

courses.

Descriptions of complementary courses that could be offered in the next school year are listed below.

Courses are offered based on demand, so only those courses in high demand will be offered in a given year.

For example, if a significant number of students requested art as a complementary course, it would be

offered, and we might even add additional classes in order to meet the demand. Conversely, if very few

students wanted to take a particular course, we would not offer it in a given year.

Fine & Performing Arts

Music Program

We are proud to honor St. Cecilia who is the patron saint of music through our diverse and innovative music program. We believe that studying music at the junior high level can open doors to the world for our students, unites students of all backgrounds, and provides a sense of community. The St. Cecilia music program allows students to positively express themselves in a safe learning environment while contributing and serving the greater good of the community.

The music program at École St. Cecilia is a three year program based on three strands of music

education:

• Instrumental music

• Choral music

• Guitar Program

Students will discover music through any three of the music options listed.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Instrumental Music is a three-year program. It is not necessary to have an extensive musical background to

register in music. The classes consist of instruction in instrument playing, theory, and history of music.

Extracurricular opportunities such as ensembles, composing, and computer-assisted music and choir are also

available. Regular practice at home is expected, as this will enhance proficiency. Music students are charged for

instrument rentals and the purchase of a mouthpiece. Certain instruments may require accessories (reeds, etc.)

that are necessary for its performance.

CHORAL MUSIC

In choral music, students develop vocal, aural, theoretical, interpretive and synthesis skills for musical

performances. Choral music is open to all students who want to explore their singing voice. This class focuses on

breath support, singing in harmony, singing in tune, and expanding the vocal range. Students rehearse and

perform various musical selections within various contexts: school celebrations, concerts, and community

events. This class is offered for one semester.

GENERAL MUSIC (GUITAR PROGRAM FOCUS)

Students develop competencies in playing a variety of traditional and contemporary music by applying these

skills through guitar. In addition, the guitar program focus is a one-semester course covering the basics of the

instrument and an application of essential music fundamentals. Students will learn the basics of playing guitar

at a beginning level through studying music notation, chord symbols, and peer modeling. A brief history of the

guitar along with a study of its respective musical styles will also be covered in this course.

DRAMA

The primary objectives for dramatic studies are to enhance student confidence and imagination through active

expression. Students explore various forms of drama through simple games and exercises and are introduced to

elements such as improvisational theater, stage plays, characterization, comedy-theater, and staging. Whenever


possible, fieldtrips and performance opportunities are planning so that students have exposure to community

theatre performances.

ART

Students will learn the basic composition of art and use the elements and principles of art (line, color, value,

space, shape, texture, form, pattern, unity, variety, emphasis, proportion, rhythm and movement and balance) to

express themselves in their artwork. Appreciation of various art forms and techniques of art criticism will also be

studied. Class projects include: Perspective drawing, contour drawing, and working in various media such as

pastel, watercolor, and acrylic.

CAREER & TECHNOLOGY FOUNDATIONS (CTF)

As a part of our complementary program, career and technology foundations

provides students with opportunities to acquire competencies that can be

applied now and in the future as they make the transition into adult roles in

the family, community, workplace, and/or further education.

Studies in CTF help students to:

• Develop skills that can be applied in their daily lives, now and in

the future

• Refine career-planning skills

• Develop technology-related skills

• Enhance employability skills

• Apply and reinforce learning developed in other subject areas.

The introductory courses offered at École St. Cecilia will include a variety of assignments and projects. They do

not require any prerequisite courses and are designed to teach students the basics in a wide selection of

electronic tools and software

COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY: MEDIA DESIGN & DIGITAL MAKER SPACE

Students discover and develop skills for relaying information effectively using various forms of media, including

animation, print, photography, audio/visual, and technology including robotics.


ROBOTICS

Students apply the fundamentals of robotics systems and basic robotics functions.

MEDIA DESIGN AND COMMUNICATION ARTS

The MDC cluster of courses is designed to provide students with the flexibility to adapt to various situations

relating to design and communication.

Modules that could be offered:

VISUAL COMPOSITION

Students learn to employ fundamental elements and principles of design for various media and gain foundational

knowledge as well as a multidisciplinary experience in preparation for other Communication Technology

courses.

AUDIO/VIDEO

Students acquire basic production skills, including planning, recording and editing, through the production of

simple audio and/or video project using basic equipment and techniques.

ANIMATION

Students are introduced to a variety of animation techniques and produce a simple animation; the focus is on

basic skills, including planning, key-framing, stage set-up, and production used to create a moving picture.

CONSTRUCTION

Within the construction course, students develop skills in the use of tools and materials used in construction

processes, and safely transform common wood materials into useful

products as well as learn various skills within the trade.

Modules that could be offered include:

BASIC TOOLS AND MATERIALS

Students develop basic hand tool and production skills to transform,

safely, common building materials into useful products.

SOLID STOCK CONSTRUCTION

Students develop basic hand and power tool skills to build a product made from solid wood.

FABRICATION TOOLS & MATERIALS

Students develop knowledge and skills in the use of basic hand tools and materials used in fabrication processes,

and safely transform common metals into useful products.

FOODS

The foods program allows students to examine the role of food, nutrition and following the Canadian food guide,

meal planning, economics, food preparation and safety which help students understand the various skills in the

culinary arts trade. The foods program is designed to provide students with foundational skills in the kitchen


that progress to more difficult tasks and challenges such as executing main courses, planning meals, and

designing menus.

Food modules that could be offered:

FOOD BASICS (Prerequisite for all Foods modules)

Students learn to make wise food choices and to understand recipes, equipment, care in handling food, and the

importance of safe and efficient work habits.

FOOD & NUTRITION BASICS

Students learn which foods are crucial to wellness, how such foods affect current performance and future health,

and discover how to choose and prepare nutritious, tasty foods.

CANADIAN HERITAGE FOODS

Students become aware of how food in Canada today reflects the country’s history and origins by examining food

patterns and customs, and by analyzing and preparing ethnic foods.

CONTEMPORARY BAKING

Students develop and demonstrate an understanding of traditional and

contemporary baking focusing on basic measuring techniques, preparation

methods, role of ingredients and the proper use of equipment for baked goods.

SNACKS & APPETIZERS

Students apply the importance of snacking to the way we eat by making nutritious, as well as delicious, snacks

and appetizers.

FASHION STUDIES

In this course, students design, manufacture and market clothing/textile products as well as study the history,

sociology, and economics of clothing and textile arts. Students learn how to complete basic hand sewn projects,

basic stitches, sewing safety, effectively using a sewing machine, following patterns, and planning designs and

projects.

ENVIRONMENT STEWARDSHIP

In this course, students examine the management and conservation of the environment and propose actions that

foster the stainable development and use of resources. Students learn about plants and animals and how they

exist within our ecosystem as well as the human connection to the land and animals. Possible themes and

projects may include:

• Recycling and Waste management within the school

RECREATION LEADERSHIP (GRADE 9 FOCUS)

The recreation leadership course is focused on providing students with opportunities to develop skills of

coaching, fitness leadership, sport performance, athletic therapy, and leading recreational activities. The

recreation leadership course at the grade 9 level focuses on the leadership aspect of the course. Possible projects

and themes within the course may include:

• Plan, organize, and implement the school intramural program.

• Plan, organize, and implement school events such as open house, and school theme days.

• Healthy Eating & Nutrition Planning

• Fitness programs and planning fitness goals and routines.

• Exposure to alternative physical activities such as wall climbing, yoga, and skiing.

RECREATION LEADERSHIP (SPORT PERFORMANCE FOCUS 7-8-9)

This recreation leadership course allows students to delve deeper into developing recreation leadership skills

through a focus in sport performance. Students will learn about promoting physical and mental well being

through sport. Students will be exposed to a wholistic approach to athletic development which includes:

• Recovery

• Rules of Sport and Sports Conduct

• Skill development

• Nutrition

• Teamwork

• Planning and executing game strategies

COMPUTER SCIENCE

Students explore hardware, software and processes to write and create structured algorithms and programs that

input, process and output data. Students will learn how to use a variety of computer technology and software,

create simple games using scratch coding, as well as learn about website development.

DESIGN STUDIES (SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY FOCUS)

This unique course allows students to learn about the creative process from the conception through to

development in architecture, industrial design, engineering, and landscaping. Projects are geared towards a

deeper application and analysis of science, technology, engineering, & mathematics (STEM) as it relates to

designing and building structures.

WHOLE SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

École St. Cecilia is a vibrant and diverse school. We come together as a school community to celebrate our

unique programs and we regularly plan activities and events that extend learning and build community.

RELIGIOUS CELEBRATIONS

As a Catholic school, we mark important events in the school and liturgical calendar in celebration. Students at our school attend a number of different parishes, including St. Matthew, Santa Maria Goretti, St. Edmund, and St. Charles. We have a wonderful relationship with St. Matthew Parish and we celebrate mass at the church whenever possible. We also invite our parish priests, division Chaplains, and Bishops to concelebrate masses in school.

MEET THE STAFF/CURRICULUM EVENING

Each September, we invite families to our annual Meet the Staff Evening. This is an opportunity for families to meet their children’s teachers and learn a little bit about what students will be learning over the course of the year.

SPIRIT DAYS/TIGER DAYS

The school leadership team organizes many theme days where students take part in organized events and/or dress-up days. Spirit days are lots of fun for everyone and include:

We hold many events for the entire school that are specific to a particular time of year, such as Halloween activities, Christmas activities, Valentine’s activities, and many others.

SCHOOL CLUBS

École St. Cecilia is home to variety of school clubs that aim to promote healthy social interactions amongst our

students as well as to extend learning and knowledge in a variety of disciplines. St. Cecilia students can

participate in any one of the follow groups and clubs:

• Student Leadership team: This is a group of dedicated grade 8 and 9 students who focus on addressing

the social needs of the Tiger community. The team is responsible for social functions, centered activities,

and numerous fundraising initiatives throughout the school year. Students interested in participating in

the leadership team are interviewed for selection in June for the following year.

• Robotics/Gaming Club: The robotics club at École St. Cecilia Junior High is made up of students who

are interested in technology and hands-on experiences. Students in the club use Lego eV3 Robots to


complete challenges. Students in this club will learn how to build robots and program them to complete

a task.

• Yearbook Club: A dedicated group of students who enjoy photography and photo editing come be a part

of the yearbook club. Meetings occur during the lunch hour.

• Boys and Girls Clubs: Students have the opportunity to participate in focused activities and

conversations that provide students with healthy peer social interactions as well as discussing themes

relevant to adolescents. Students involved in either the boys club or girls club are able to make

connections within their own peer group, and gain confidence in socializing with others.

• Drama Production: Every year École St. Cecilia Junior High organizes a musical production including

acting, singing, dancing, set and design and stage managing. Students have the opportunity to create a

play from start to finish from every aspect of production and put on 2-3 live shows. Past productions

include: Aladdin, Alice in Wonderland, The Grinch, Frozen, Annie and Grease.

• Broadcast Club/Tiger TV: A group of dedicated students plan and produce our Tiger Tv- live daily

televised news broadcast that features all of the up to date information about École St. Cecilia, daily

prayer, videos, and broadcasting school celebrations. This club provides students with exposure to media

design, computer editing, and audio.

• Band Concert: The music program at École St. Cecilia organizes concert and performance opportunities

for students throughout the year.

TIGER ATHLETIC PROGRAM

The athletic legacy and the “Home of the Tigers” is alive and well at École St. Cecilia! We are a member of the inter-school athletic program. Our school teams play a number of games with other junior high schools in the Edmonton Catholic School District. Our teams include: boys and girls volleyball, basketball, soccer , track and field, curling, badminton, slo-pitch, and cross country running.

BRAIDED JOURNEY’S PROGRAM

Braided Journeys Student Support Program at École St. Cecilia is

committed to assisting student success by cultivating a caring,

welcoming, and positive place where Indigenous students see

themselves, their contributions and their culture represented,

respected, and celebrated. Our program offers support,

encouragement and guidance throughout a student’s educational

journey. A dedicated transition support coach organizes cultural

activities as well as supports students academically, culturally, as

well as works as a family-school liaison to ensure that students can

transition to the school as well as beyond the school to High

School.

Procedural Information

HOMEROOM

Each student is assigned to a homeroom teacher. Students begin the morning in their homeroom where

attendance is taken and recorded and students listen to daily announcements as well as prayer. The homeroom

teacher takes a special interest in his or her students and helps to build a feeling of community and

understanding within the class.

COMMUNICATION

LATES AND ABSENCES – PHONE HOME PROGRAM

Consistent and regular attendance is essential to being a successful student and for getting the most out of each student’s education. Parents/Guardians are asked to phone the school whenever a student is going to be absent. Messages may be left on the answering machine through the night or early morning. Our automated phone system will telephone the student’s home or parent’s place of employment if we do not hear from the parent. Students who must leave the school prior to the end of the normal school day must sign out at the office prior to leaving the school. Parents are asked to telephone the school to let us know when students will be leaving school early. Students reporting late for school must register in the office before proceeding to class.

NEWSLETTERS & CORRESPONDENCE

The school newsletter is posted to our school website on the first day of every month and a notice is sent to parents via email. We communicate information to parents as it becomes available, via email. Generally, additional communication is sent on Fridays throughout the school year.

POWERSCHOOL

We believe it is imperative that parents be well informed as to their child’s academic progress. PowerSchool is available for parents of students in ECSD. Parents of junior high students may login to the Power School portal to view their child's class assignments, grading information, report cards, attendance and scheduling information. Parents of elementary students may view their child’s attendance and report card information. This program allows parents to easily communicate with teachers via e-mail or receive automatic notification of unexcused absences, missing assignments, or failing grades. PowerSchool also allows parents to pay fees online. Once we have registration documents, including email addresses, we will provide parents who are new to ECSD with a username and password to access the system.

NOON HOUR PROCEUDRES

CLOSED CAMPUS

Students are not allowed to leave school property during the lunch break. All students must remain in the school to eat their lunch in their designated area. Students may go on the school grounds for the remainder of the lunch hour, however, under no circumstances are they allowed off school property. The only exception to this is for students who live within easy walking distance of the school and have their parent's written permission to go home for lunch on file in the office.

LUNCH DROP OFFS

Occasionally, parents drop off or order lunches from delivery services for students. We do not disturb classes for

lunch deliveries and we do not have staff available to ensure that lunches are delivered to students. All lunches

delivered to the school for students must be clearly marked with the student’s name and placed in the student

lunch bin in the office. Students may pick up their lunch from the office once the noon hour bell has gone.

Parents are asked to ensure that students are aware that a lunch will be waiting for them in the office.

LUNCH FACILITIES

Students are assigned designated areas where they are able to eat their lunch in a safe and supervised

environment. These areas include designated classrooms, the small gym, and room 112. A nutritious snack

program is provided to students on a bi-weekly basis, as well hot water and microwaves are available for

students.

ADDITIONAL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

LOCKERS

Each student is assigned a locker. It is the student’s responsibility to keep the locker clean at all times. Students

are also provided with 1 rental lock at no cost. Students are advised to store their personal belongings in their

lockers and to keep their lockers locked and closed at all times. To avoid possible theft, students are requested to

keep combination numbers private and leave items of value at home. Please note that school issued locks must

be used and that the school reserves the right to search any student’s locker if the administration considers a

search necessary to maintain the integrity and safety of the school community.

TEXTBOOKS

Students are assigned textbooks in the CORE subject areas. Students are responsible for the care of their

textbooks and replacements costs or fines will be levied for loss or damage of school textbooks.


TRANSPORTATION

École St. Cecilia is situated within a hub of several local schools in our community and as such, students have

access to many different Edmonton Transit Bus Routes and school special routes that conveniently stop outside

of our school grounds. ETS bus passes are available from the school’s business office.

PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES

Electronic devices including personal laptop computers, chromebooks, and cellphones are permitted on school

property, but they must be on silent mode. Students may access their laptops or chromebooks for academic

purposes however, students are not to use their cellular devices during instruction time. Students are allowed to

use their electronic devices for personal use in the school before 8:12 am and after 2:45 pm provided the use is

appropriate and does not infringe on the rights or privacy of other students or staff and adheres to the Edmonton

Catholic School District Student Responsible Use Agreement. Parents who need to contact students can call

the office any time. Consequences will result for those students who cannot follow school policy.

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

At École St. Cecilia Junior High, we aim to create a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment

that honors our call to work together in faith, love, and hope. We celebrate our accomplishments, and we believe

that each person brings gifts, talents and interests to our community to develop and share.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS

We affirm that the rights set out in the Alberta Human Rights Act and the Canadian Charter of Rights and

Freedoms are afforded to all students and staff members within École St. Cecilia Junior High School. We affirm

that pursuant to the Alberta Human Rights Act and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, students and

staff members are protected from discrimination. More specifically, discrimination refers to any conduct that

serves to deny or discriminate against any person or class of persons regarding any goods, services,

accommodation, or facilities that are customarily available to the public, and the denial or discrimination is

based on race, religious beliefs, colour, gender, physical disability, mental disability, ancestry, place of origin,

marital status, source of income, family status or sexual orientation.

The Student Conduct Policy is reviewed on an annual basis by parents, students and school staff and is revised as

necessary in response to feedback from the parties listed above. Expectations of students and school policies are

outlined at the beginning of the school year and are regularly reviewed with students. The Student Conduct

Policy is printed in student handbooks and is posted on the school website.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF MEMBERS WITHIN OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY

All members of our school community - students, parents, and staff - are expected to model and promote

behavior that contributes to a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment that respects

diversity and fosters a sense of belonging. Parents and school staff have the responsibility to help students meet

their responsibilities.


STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

(a) be diligent in pursuing the student’s studies;

(b) attend school regularly and punctually;

(c) co-operate fully with everyone authorized by the board to provide education programs and other

services;

(d) comply with the rules of the school;

(e) account to the student’s teachers for the student’s conduct;

(f) respect the rights of others;

(g) ensure that the student’s conduct contributes to a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning

environment that respects diversity and fosters a sense of belonging;

(h) refrain from, report and not tolerate bullying or bullying behavior directed toward others in the

school, whether or not it occurs within the school building, during the school day or by electronic

means;

(i) positively contribute to the student’s school and community.

PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

(a) to take an active role in the student’s educational success, including assisting the student in

complying with section 12,

(b) to ensure that the parent’s conduct contributes to a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning

(c) to co-operate and collaborate with school staff to support the delivery of specialized supports and

services to the student,

(d) to encourage, foster and advance collaborative, positive and respectful relationships with teachers,

principals, other school staff and professionals providing supports and services in the school, and

(e) to engage in the student’s school community.

STUDENTS CAN CONTRIBUTE TO CREATING A POSITIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT BY:

• smiling at peers and adults in our school

• speaking to their friends about their behavior (in a nice way) when they are not contributing to a

welcoming, caring, respectful and safe environment.

• greeting visitors to their classroom or school

• being friendly and helpful towards students that are new to the school and others.

• sitting with someone who is alone at lunch, inviting someone to join games or sit with their group

outside, or working together to complete a project.

• keeping our school and school grounds clean and tidy

• coming to school/class on time and as prepared as possible.


• treating everyone with respect even if they don’t agree with their beliefs and/or values

• having empathy for others

• following classroom and school expectations so everyone is able to learn

• not engaging in behavior such as put downs or snickers when questions are asked in class – no one

should feel afraid or nervous about coming to school.

PARENTS CAN HELP STUDENTS MEET THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES BY:

• modelling kindness

• paying attention to how they talk about other children and the school in front of their children

• taking responsibility for their mistakes

• reporting any problems at school to the teacher as soon as they can. The best place to start is with

their child’s teacher. If parents are not satisfied with the results of this conversation, the next step

would be to make an appointment to speak with their child’s principal.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS FOR BEHAVIOR

At École St. Cecilia we are dedicated to learning in a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning

environment. We are focused on learning in a positive and caring environment. Anything that interferes with

teaching or learning is not allowed. This includes inappropriate dress, gum-chewing, head gear, sunglasses,

inappropriate use of electronic devices or games, behavior that conflicts with our district responsible use

agreement, and physical contact between students. School-wide expectations are communicated to our students

by teachers in classroom discussions, by school administration in assemblies, during morning announcements,

through the school newsletter and through our school website. We have set behavioral guidelines for the school

as a whole and have asked each teacher to set programs and procedures designed to maximize student learning

and responsibility. Since each teacher has a different style, specific expectations and procedures will vary from

class to class.

CONSEQUENCES FOR INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR

We concentrate on positive behavior and attitudes; however, there are times when a student has difficulty

recognizing their responsibility as a student. In such cases, we have outlined several possible consequences for

behavior, whether the behavior occurs within the school building, during the school day or by electronic means.

When a student behaves inappropriately, they can expect that the staff member present (teacher, administrator,

teacher assistant, support or custodial staff) will take the most appropriate action. One or more of the following

can be expected to occur:

▪ Verbal reprimand

▪ Restriction of privileges and activities

▪ Noon hour detention of student


▪ Parental involvement.

▪ Parent-student conference with school staff

▪ Verbal or written apology by student

▪ Problem solving, monitoring or reviewing behavior expectations

▪ Replacement or repair of damaged property

▪ Temporary exclusion of student from class

▪ Bus suspension for students riding the bus

▪ In-school suspension

▪ Out-of school suspension

▪ Behavior contract

▪ Involvement of outside agencies

▪ Involvement of Police

▪ Expulsion.

▪ Record of incident retained in PowerSchool.

In dealing with inappropriate behaviors, consequences are fair, but not always equal. A number of factors are

taken into account when dealing with inappropriate behavior. As might be expected, the more serious the

behavior, the more severe the consequence. The nature and circumstances of the incident, as well as frequency

of misbehavior, and unique student

UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIRORS

Unacceptable behavior could result in a suspension from school under Section 24 of the School Act. The

following are considered major forms of misbehavior and will be dealt with severely, whether they occur within

the school building, during the school day or by electronic means.

• Bullying/Cyberbullying

Alberta Education defines “Bullying” as:

“…a repeated and hostile or demeaning behaviour intended to cause harm, fear or distress, including

psychological harm or harm to a person's reputation. It often involves an imbalance of social or physical

power.”

Bullying can take different forms:

• Physical – pushing, hitting

• Verbal – name calling, threats, put-downs

• Emotional/Social – exclusion, rumors, extortion of money or possessions, intimidation

• Cyber – using the computer or other technology to harass or threaten

• Defiance

• Physical/Verbal Abuse or Harassment

• Improper or Profane Language


• Vandalism or Willful Damage to School Property

• Theft

• Illegal Drugs or Substances

Possession or use of illegal drugs or substances on school property or in sight of school property will result in an

immediate suspension and may lead to expulsion from the school. In cases of drug use, the police will be

involved in the investigation and charges could be laid.

• Behaviour Dangerous to Self or Others

• Weapons

Possession of a weapon or presentation of any object meant to threaten or intimidate will result in an

immediate suspension. Any weapons brought to school will be confiscated and turned over to the police. Police

may be involved if this is deemed to be appropriate by school administration.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This rule also applies to toy knives and guns. Simulated weapons will be treated in the

same fashion as real weapons. They have no place in a school environment.

• Repeated Violation of General Expectations

Repeated violation of general expectations or a continual disregard of classroom rules will result in an out-of-

school suspension.

ACADEMIC HONESTY

Academic honesty is an important component of educational programming at all levels. We expect all students

to complete their school work to the best of their ability and to demonstrate integrity and honesty by completing

their work themselves. Students are also expected to value the attitudes and skills of being a principled

communicator in all learning and assessment. Students who deliberately attempt to gain advantage in marks

through dishonest practices such as cheating or plagiarism will resubmit the work they neglected to complete

themselves, but will gain no credit for it (mark of zero). If students engage in dishonest practices on more than

one occasion, a comment referring to the student’s academic dishonesty may be added to the student’s progress

report.

STUDENT RECOGNITION PROGRAM

At École St. Cecilia we strive to continually fulfill our legacy of excellence. As members of a family, we cheer one

another on and celebrate the achievements and contributions of each person in our community. We celebrate

the achievements of each of our students as they engage with the curriculum and discover areas of learning they

are passionate about.

Students are recognized for their achievements through comments on PowerSchool, report cards, on morning

announcements, and in school and division publications. Students will also have opportunities throughout the

year to share their learning and achievements with families. Numerous awards are presented to students in June

as part of our awards night gala which celebrates excellence in academics, athletics, fine-arts, and community

service.

The criteria for the honor’s program at École St. Cecilia are as follows:

• A student has an average of 80% in the core subjects of

English Language Arts, French Language Arts, Social

Studies, Mathematics and Science

• A minimum of 70% and Proficient (PR) in all other subjects.

TECHNOLOGY & CHROMEBOOK PURCHASE PROGRAM

• Students are strongly encouraged to bring their own device to school each day. Technology will continue

to play an important role in your child’s education. It will be imperative that students have access to a

device if are required to learn at home for extended periods of time. Unfortunately, we are not able to

lend devices to families to support at home/remote learning. It will be the responsibility of the family to

provide a device for students to work remotely.

• For students attending in class, we do have a series of Chromebook carts at St. Cecilia which students

will have access to during the day. These devices will be shared amongst all students across all grades.

Students will be sanitizing the devices prior to returning them to the cart.

School payments may be made online through PowerSchool. Unfortunately, we are not able to accept cash or

cheques. Please note that some complimentary will require an additional fee as well as some extracurricular

activities such as school clubs and athletics.

SUPPLY LISTS

École St. Cecilia do not require purchasing pre-set supply items.

Rather, individual teachers will provide students with a list of

recommended basic school supplies they need for each course. We

recommend purchasing the following basic items: HB pencils, ball-

point pens of various colors, basic calculator, a package of lined

paper, a three ring binder with dividers, a coil scribbler, and a ruler.

sent to elementary schools once Transition Passports from Elementary schools have been reviewed.

indicate their preferences and return the document to their respective elementary school.

✓ We make every effort to enroll your child in their preferred complimentary courses that they choose,

however this depends on the overall interest in the course as well as capacity.

✓ Students new to Edmonton Catholic may pick up a registration package at École St. Cecilia Junior High or

obtain a package during open house.

✓ Attend open house and ask questions during the recruitment presentations.

✓ Parents of prospective students must complete the entire 2021-2022 registration package and attach all
