What is Mechatronics?
- Introduced by Japanese engineer Ko Kikuchi in 1969
- Mechatronics is the synergistic integration ofprecision mechanical engineering, electronics andcontrol systems (& computer science) in the designof products and manufacturing processes.
Mechatronics = Mechanics + Electronics(+ Control + Computer Science)
It’s an unusual course!
• Close contact with Industy• Cooperation over program borders• (a lot of) Lab hands-on practice• Examination
2020 registered students
• 50 Mechanical Engineering• 22 Electrical Engineering• 4 Computer Science• 1 Engineering Physics• 2 International students
What do students think?
“Write 3 good & 3 bad things about the course”Feedback from the students 2017

Overview - Course Structure
Lectures (not so many…)
• Main focus: to help with the individualproject work
• Some lectures aiming at the industrialproject
• Topics can be changed if needed
Individual lab project• Individual project (collaborative work allowed)• Build an embedded servo control system from
the component level • Lab access 24 / 7 with one 2 hour assisted lab
session per week and group (6 groups?)• Debugging is the key word!!• Several design stages (milestones) to be
checked by the lab assistants
Industrial Projects• They will be presented next week
• Project group’s competence must match the problem given
• The group must be able to finish the project in 2020
• We want to know if you intend to continue developing a prototype in the spring course EIEN01 or not!
Previous Industrial Projects
• Volvo Trucks
• Baxter
• Volvo CE
• ElOnRoad
• Axis
• Haldex
• BorgWarner
• Infonomy
• Tetra Pack
What’s needed to pass the course?
• Industrial project assessment end of December
– Oral presentation and written report
• Demonstration of lab project (exam!)
– Demonstrate your functioning system
– Teachers introduce bugs / ask for added functionality
– Debug and repair (4 hours)
– Show again
The first week…• Today: Course introduction, lab group selection,
first lecture on electronic components!
• Tomorrow: continuation electronic components, presentation of the “individual project” and milestones
• Thursday: introduction to the serial port, StripCAD and vero- board prototyping, inspirational lecture “Control and sensory feedback in prosthetics” by Dr. Christian Antfolk
The second week…• 8/9: Inspirational lecture “Industry 4.0” by Prof.
Anders Robertsson, industrial projects catalogue
• 9/9: Starting of the lab sessions!
• 10/9: Lecture on I/O devices and PCB design:– Pulse Width Modulation– Analogue / Digital conversion– Incremental Encoder– PCB design guidelines
