Reading Program

Part 2: Walk and Read Groups*Differentiated Instruction for Student
Needs10:00-11:00 (M-TH)1. Students assessed to determine needs.2. Reading Skill Groups
**Students may stay with homeroom teacher or change classes to another first grade classroom/teacher for W&R instruction.
**Groups will focus on intervention, grade level and enrichment skills to meet individual needs.
Walk and Read Groups
All first grade teachers will be sharing students for walk and read.
In addition, these ESE teachers will also provide small group instruction in all subjects:

Accelerated Reader
• When your child can read 100 sight words his/her teacher will start your child on the Accelerated Reader (AR) program to strengthen comprehension skills.
• Books are color coded by level of difficulty.• Students may check out a book on their level
from the media center, read it 2 times at home, and then take the test at school.
• More details will be sent home when your child is ready to begin this program.

Student Achievement Codes(Report Card Grades)

Grades will be determined using a 80/20 ratio. 80% will come from assessments, 20% from quizzes, classwork, participation
Minimum First Grade Expectations
• Master each CCSS at 70% or greater in all core content areas taught
• Attain a grade equivalent of 2.0 by year’s end on an individualized assessment
• Read with accuracy and fluency equal to first grade end of year expectations
• *Reading on grade level by the end of first grade is an indicator of academic success. It is essential that these standards are met before moving to the next grade.

Weekly Behavior Evaluations
• Weekly grades for behavior/work study – E, S, N grades will be given.
• Behavior charts will remain in homework folders for the entire nine weeks.
• Review, sign, and return the behavior chart to school the following Thursday with completed homework.
Homework

• District-wide individualized reading and math computer program used daily in class
• If you see on your child’s paper “on computer OR on SM5” they were completing their session for the day on the program.
• Incentives will be offered for individuals who meet their goal.
Volunteering in the ClassroomA few requests:
Fill out a volunteer form and return to the front
office, even if you’re only chaperoning for a field
trip.
Schedule volunteering in advance.
Contact teacher if unable to attend.
Check in at the office for name tag.
Record your time in PTO volunteer log.
Work with your child’s teacher to arrange a
procedure to follow when you arrive to volunteer
(i.e. Where will projects be located, etc.).

Confidentiality:When you volunteer with us you will come in
contactwith your child’s classmates. We ask that you
keepthings you observe about other children’s
academicprogress or behavior confidential. Feel free todiscuss any concerns you have with your child’steacher at the right time, but not with others.
Cell Phone Etiquette:– Turn phones to vibrate or silent.– Take phone calls outside of the classroom.
