WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

THIS WEEKEND, we will betaking up a special collectionfor World Mission Sunday tosupport the Church’s

missionary activities. Offerings this Sundayprovide financial assistance to about 1,150missionary dioceses in Asia, Africa, LatinAmerica, and the Pacific Islands. This is apractical way for us to show Christ’s love forthose whose practice of our faith needs oursupport. We appreciate your generosity for theMissions.

True Greatness Lies in Service

“For the Son of Man did notcome to be served but to serve

and to give His life as aransom for many”

Today’s First Reading is from the fourth Suffering Servant Song in Isaiah. Through

Today’s Responsorial can be seen as a hymn of praise for God’s goodness to

the servant’s suffering and death for the sake of his people, their sins will beforgiven; a foreshadowing of Christ’s suffering and death for the redemption of Hispeople. God rewards the sacrifice of His Servant’s own life by raising Him from thedead (the meaning of seeing the fullness of days).

The focus of today’s Second Reading is

us or as a hymn of expectant trust in His future providence. As a response to God’sintervention and rescue of those who call on Him, this is a hymn of praise. As ahymn of trust, we turn to Him, entrusting our plea to Him, confident He will respondwith great generosity for we have placed our trust in Him. Trusting God withoutevidence of His concern is real trust, for it is then that it is most difficult to do so.

In today’s Gospel, again Jesus predicts His

Jesus the High Priest, who in offering thesacrifice of His own life, is both the priest whooffers and the offering itself. Our confidence in

Him is based on the fact that although He hassuch a high office, He understands ourweakness. His human experience was like ours, except for sin, so He can empathize with ourneeds.

impending Passion, and again His disciplesmisinterpret it. He speaks of a life offered inservice; they think of power and prestige. In theface of Jesus’ death, James and John seek rank

and prestige. It would be like telling your best friend you’re dying, and in responsethey ask if they can have your new car after you’re gone. Jesus explains the fate ofsuffering and dying for others in terms of being baptized (Baptism) and drinking ofthe cup of salvation (Eucharist). This reminds us that the Sacraments of Baptismand Eucharist are a form of dying to oneself in order to live in and for Christ. Jesusalso helps them put true greatness into perspective. For the greatest in God’skingdom is the one who serves the rest. May we have the grace to recognize and livein this perspective.

Priesthood Sunday, the last Sunday ofOctober, is a special day set aside to honorthe priesthood in the United States. It is a dayto reflect upon and affirm the role of thepriesthood in the life of the Church as a centralone. Priesthood Sunday was established in

2003 to provide a way for Catholic communities to express appreciation for thedevoted priests who serve them so faithfully. Such a celebration is increasinglyrelevant in light of the declining number of priests in the U.S. Only about 4,000 ofthe 19,000 parishes in this country currently have more than one priest. Manypriests serve two or more parishes by themselves.
