Frequently Asked Assessment Questions
When to assess?
14
Fall Assessment – close to beginning of the year/enrollment
Winter Assessment- only for children not assessed in fall
Spring Assessment – close to the end of the school year
6 Months preferred between Fall and Spring assessment
District determines exact assessment dates; can also set seasons in online
systems to match your timelines!
© KEDS 2015
Changes to Approved Assessments
• 5 approved assessment instruments
• GOLD, COR Advantage, Work Sampling, AEPS, Carolina
• Districts must select one of these approved assessments, and train teachers
accordingly.
© KEDS 2015
Collection of Assessment Data
ALL required students must have complete assessments:
A. Every item must have a score or data are incomplete!
B. Every online child record must have a unique 10-digit
student SSID, or data are incomplete!
C. Every district must ensure that KEDS has administrative
access to their online assessment data, each year.
D. Many off-site programs and Head Start centers may not be
aware of this policy; it is district responsibility to be sure
data are complete and received by KEDS.

Teaching Strategies GOLD
With the Teaching Strategies GOLD, can teachers use the "Not Observed"
or "Not Yet" choices?
With GOLD, you are allowed to use the Not Yet option for items for which the
student has no level of skill attainment; NOTE that is a score that we do receive
in KEDS. The Not Observed option is reserved for items that have not been
seen, but we do NOT encourage this option as we do not receive any score for
such items and must consider that item as missing data. If more than 25% of
the items are missing, including those marked Not Observed, that student’s
data will be incomplete and will not be included in the OSEP analysis.

RtT UpdatesMany aspects of the grid are not known. Districts
are now piloting criteria of the grid. At the summer
Ready Kids conferences, many of you posed
questions that had not been anticipated by the
groups creating the grid.
With your expertise, we will create a list of your
questions and seek answers. Perhaps, your
questions will capture criteria that needs to be in
the grid.

Interactions
ECERS-R vs ECERS-3
1. Individually, analyze the similarities and differences between items in ECERS-R and ECERS-3. What do you notice?
2. In pairs, discuss your observations. What major changes do you notice?
Big Picture Differences…
Scaling of quality is improved. Lots of ECERS-R indicators moved up or down on the item scales– Example: Changes in health and safety items will likely
improve scores for those items
Increased emphasis on engaging language, literacy and math
Less focus on counting materials and more focus on how teachers use classroom materials with children (more instructional rigor)
Social AND teaching interactions considered throughout E3

Interactions in ECERS-3
1. Review the level 5 and level 7 indicators related to interactions.
2. At your table, discuss:
– What you notice about these indicators?
– How are these different from ECERS-R?
– What are the implications?

– What are their instructional strengths (which Domain 3 components)?
– Areas for improvement?

Effective Dissemination of ELLN Content Capacity Building
1. Examples of effective
dissemination
-handout
2. Share new ideas at your table
-write new ideas on the back
3. Whole group
-sharing of ideas
Capacity BuildingThe goal is to disseminate the material
to a wider audience!
• Following each ELLN teacher day, Ashland RTC will send an email to preschool coordinators summarizing the content and providing links to related resources
• Preschool Coordinators should share this message with others who can help “spread the word” (i.e., principals, preschool teachers, etc.)
• This link can be posted on district preschool websites.
