The Emmanuel Learning ExperienceA HANDS-ON APPROACH
Here, every class is taught by a professor, not a teaching assistant,
creating a deep, personal student-faculty relationship that begins on
day one. With more than 50 areas of study to explore, our goal is to
instill in you the knowledge, skills and habits of a mind developed
through the study of the liberal arts and sciences.
We are a community with a lifelong passion for teaching and learning,
rooted in the commitment to rigorous intellectual inquiry and the
pursuit of truth. We believe in an education shaped by the Catholic
intellectual tradition — one that develops your academic potential,
your sense of self and your commitment to serve others.
Students who demonstrate superior academic ability and promise are
invited to participate in our Honors Program — a four-year academic
and co-curricular program to sharpen your critical thinking, enhance
your communication skills and open doors to fascinating research
opportunities in a wide range of disciplines.
Our goal is to position you for success at the college level, for a lifetime
of learning and for participation in a diverse and global society. It is
all part of our founding mission: to transform lives and make a better
world with a strong values-based education.

Academic SupportA GUIDED PATH TO EXCELLENCE
Beginning at Orientation, your academic advisor will help you
transition into college life. You’ll meet regularly to develop a four-year
academic plan, select courses, review your academic progress and tap
into additional resources.
In the Academic Resource Center (ARC), you’ll find the programs, peers
and professionals to help hone your learning skills, improve your
writing abilities and turn tutoring into a powerful resource.

Boston LEARN ON LOCATION IN A HISTORIC, GLOBAL CITY
We live in a vibrant, international, culturally rich, sports-crazed and
intellectually engaged city, and we take advantage of it at every turn.
During art class, you won’t just look at slides of Claude Monet’s
Water Lilies, you’ll stand before the painting in the Museum of Fine
Arts. In chemistry, you won’t just read about pH levels, runoff and
ecosystems, you’ll analyze them in the collection of brooks, ponds
and culverts known as Boston’s Muddy River.
As part of a service-learning course, you will take the knowledge
learned in class and immediately apply it to effect positive change
in the community. These elective courses — in art or education,
science or sociology, history or business — partner with local
organizations to provide you with significant experiences that
extend your classroom into the community. Courses have included
“Catholic Social Teaching,” “Spanish at Work in the Community” and
“Management Research for Positive Change.”

Research + ScholarshipSET YOURSELF APART
At Emmanuel, professors are always on the look out for outstanding
papers that can be delivered at national conferences in areas such as
science, psychology or political science, as well as poems, stories and
essays that can be published in anthologies and literary journals.
Here, undergraduates work shoulder-to-shoulder with faculty on
major research projects and regularly see their work in print. At most
colleges, this experience is only for graduate students, who strive to be
noticed in the sea of students eager for the privilege of stepping into
world-class research labs. Working closely with faculty, even in the
first year, is part of the fabric of the Emmanuel experience.
Faculty members have distinguished reputations and maintain
connections all over the world, but they choose to teach at Emmanuel
because they are driven to be part of your transformation. Just ask any
of these students.

BriannaMajor: Global Studies Internship: Office of Former Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, Immigration Intern
“In this role, I served as a liaison to constituents, aiding in the immigration andnaturalization process. I had the opportunity to meet with Homeland Security and gain valuable knowledge about immigration law and the day-to-day plights of constituents and their families. After graduation, I intend to explore job opportunities abroad working in embassies, which I feel will complement my time spent in the senator’s office.”
DougMajor: English CommunicationsInternship: Hill Holliday, Media Buying Intern
“I was able to shadow other departments and discover more about different aspects ofthe advertising industry — a staple of the Hill Holliday internship program. One day, I volunteered to assist with a photo shoot and it just so happened that the woman working next to me was the head of the accounts management department. She told me that she loved my attitude and that she wanted to have me as part of her team right after graduation, which was amazing to hear.”
FrankMajor: Psychology; Minor: Organizational Leadership Internships: WGBH & Biogen Idec
“In both instances, my internships took place in the human resources departments. They offered me a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes work concerning personnel and employee relations. In addition, I conducted research on campus that further drove me to a career path focused on personal interaction. Through on-campus research and internships, Emmanuel provided me the experiences and skills to excel.”
ChristineMajor: BiologyInternships: Harvard University and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center
“My professors at Emmanuel really helped me focus my career path, from introducingme to genetic counseling, a field of science with which I was previously unfamiliar, to helping me define and set my career goals. Emmanuel’s reputation in the sciences and its partnerships with the institutions in the Longwood Medical and Academic Area make studying here a unique, challenging and rewarding experience. I’ve been offered many opportunities that aren’t readily available to undergraduates, even at larger schools.”

“The second we arrived on campus for a visit, we felt how energetic

KATHY BAKER – PARENT '14, '17
A Family Affair: The Bakers and Boston
For the Baker family from Holden, Mass., Boston is like a second home. Kathy and Fred Baker, parents of Chris ’14 and Matt ’17, met as undergraduate students in Boston and have fond memories of their urban student experience. They drive into the city so often and effortlessly to the point Kathy says the car “just drives itself.” If they could have a vacation home anywhere, she admits it would be here, in town.
It took one visit to Emmanuel’s campus to realize it was the right place for their sons. Chris transferred to the College during his sophomore year and was immediately hooked by the welcoming environment. He got involved on campus from the very start, notably as a member of the track & field team, which eased the adjustment. For Matt, it was Boston or bust, and Emmanuel offered the type of personal interactions he sought from his own college experience. Together, Chris and Matt are following in their parents’ footsteps and making the city of Boston (and Emmanuel), their own.
Campus + Residence LifeA PLACE TO CALL HOME
400 The Fenway is your new Boston address for the next four years.
Your new home base has a big green yard in the middle of Boston’s
medical and business worlds.
If the entire city of Boston is your extended classroom, the Jean
Yawkey Center is your extended living room. It’s your student center,
your dining hall, your state-of-the-art gym and fitness center. Your
residence hall is a place where you can gather, study, participate in
activities and be at home. All four residence halls are just steps from
the middle of campus, so you are never far from the action.
Your community is more than a historic chapel, and contemporary
classrooms, labs and playing fields. Your community is full of
resources for personal success and expression.

“A Catholic college is a place where the
dialogue between faith and reason is
taken seriously. Here, students engage in
discussions of the ethical issues of our time.”
SISTER JANET EISNER, SND, PRESIDENT
Sisters of Notre Dame de NamurTHE GREATEST WORK
In 1919, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, who believe that
education is the greatest work on earth, opened Emmanuel
College to provide an education to those who otherwise might
not have the opportunity to aquire one. Their mission was clear:
making known God’s goodness…educating for life.
The rigorous intellect, the vibrant faith and the joyful spirit
of this powerful mission are embodied in Sister Janet Eisner,
SND, who first came to Emmanuel as a student. She returned
as a professor, served as Chair of the English Department and
Director of Admissions, and now serves as President.
Sister Janet loves the students of Emmanuel College. But make
no mistake, her expectations are high. This is an education that
will make a difference in your life. In return, it is expected that
you will make a difference in the lives of others.

Mission + MinistryLIFT UP YOUR HEART
In an active campus community committed to social justice, you
make a difference, when and where you want. We believe a personal
and loving God calls each of us to engage in the contemporary world
around us. This is a community of possibilities, a force for action.
Campus Ministry
Inspired by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, our community
lives and celebrates a belief in the goodness of God and the goodness
of God’s people, no matter what faith they follow. This is the soul
of our mission. Through focused ministries, educational programs,
volunteer service, prayer and Liturgies, Campus Ministry provides
opportunities for you to deepen your spirituality, act justly and
live faithfully.
The Center for Mission + Spirituality
This is a cause that lives within the hearts of the entire Emmanuel
community. The Center seeks to translate into action the strong
mission, beliefs and legacy of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.
Through the 1804 Society, a leadership organization named in honor
of the founding year of the Sisters of Notre Dame, students promote
service to others and serve as ambassadors of Emmanuel by sharing
the mission both on campus and in the community.
Service: Belief in Action
We learn and teach, research and explore, work and play in the context
of a greater society — a society of people who need what we can give.
We challenge ourselves to act, to lead and to give generously to others.
We work for justice and keep the connection between faith and action
alive in many ways. In fact, more than 80% of our students participate
in service.

Joe ’13B.A. History and Secondary Education 2013-2014 Fulbright English Teaching Assistant, Latvia
Stories such as Joe’s exemplify the philosophy of student engagement at Emmanuel — with a little initiative and an open mind, ideas can become reality.
In 2010, Joe and his classmates were asked to devise a plan that would take Emmanuel’s student-run radio station, EC Radio, to a higher level. Joe’s plan was ultimately chosen and he found himself in the role of EC Radio president. Under his leadership, the station quickly rose in popularity, as Joe featured unknown bands and created a live music café in the basement of St. Joseph Hall. He also was able to blend his love for history and politics with a new passion for radio by showing up in New Hampshire during the winter presidential primary and broadcasting from both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions in the summer of 2012.
