2. This presentation will answer basic questions you may have about this class including:Is online learning easier than a face-to-face class? Is this going to be a good fit for me?What does the instructor do in this class? What will I learn in ENG 112?How do we do peer review and group projects in an online class? How do we do a speech component in an online class? What are the deadlines like in this class?Other stuff to know. 3. Is online learning easier?Online learning is CONVENIENT, but NOT easier thantraditional classroom learning. You have to do all the samework as a face-to-face class but you have to fit it in aroundyour own busy schedule without the benefit of the teacherreminding you when things are due. 4. Is this going to be a good fit for me?If you are good at organizing your time, being self motivated andkeeping up with course work without much assistance, this willbe a good fit for you. If you are looking to fit an extra class intoan already full schedule, or if you have a hard time keeping trackof deadlines and completing work without reminders, you mayfind it difficult to succeed in this class. 5. What does the instructor do in this class? The instructor puts up all the assignments and materials at thebeginning of the semester. As the semester progresses she willanswer discussion questions, grade your work and send youbrief comments on each assignment. She will also hold regularin-person office hours which you can come to for extra help ifyou are struggling with an assignment. Im here when you need me. Drop by my office hours in person or post a question to the discussion board. 6. What will I learn in ENG 112?This class is an alternative to standard ENG 102 and is mandatory for certain majors (such as radiology). ENG 112 is a technical writing class which means that students learn how to construct documents that are used in the modern workplace including. In the first half of the semester you will learn to write the following documents:1. Memo2. Resume and cover letter (peer reviewed)3. Redesigned document (group project)4. Instructions (peer reviewed)5. Midterm (covers all material from first half of semester)The second half of the semester is devoted to creating a 10-15 page persuasive research paper that uses MLA Citation. The assignments include submission of:1. A proposal2. An outline3. Two peer reviewed rough drafts4. Oral presentation5. Research paper6. Final exam (emphasizes material from second half of semester but may include key information from the first half)Although you may sometimes have longer, expect to have one assignment due per week. 7. How do we do peer review and group project in an online class? In the modern workplace people have to work together even though they are in entirely different locations all the time. You will have to do the same in this class. For most assignments you will be required to have your work reviewed by two classmates. You share your work in Google Drive and choose who you work with (if you are stuck and cannot find a partner, please reach out to the instructor). You can form a group and keep those partners for each project or you can change up partners each time. You can work with more than two classmates if you choose, but you cannot work with fewer than two.Use the discussion boards, Google Drive and email to find people to work with. Set up peer groups early. Choose people who you think make insightful contributions to discussion.Good communication and being timely with peer feedback are the key to successful peer work online. 8. How do we do a speech component in an online class? There is less speech in this section than there is in a face-to-face class, so if this is an area you know you need to work on to succeed in your job, we recommend you take the in- person section of the class. In the first half of the semester you will have an appointment to talk to the instructor viaSkype for a mock job interview during our second module. In the second half of thesemester you will create a PowerPoint presentation with voice-over narration to sharewith the class. This presentation will give an overview of the key position andinformation provided in your paper and will be sent to the professor, who will post it forthe class to discuss and evaluate. Students will also have a final Skype session with theprofessor in which they will present their research. 9. What are the deadlines like in this class? Each project has a final deadline for you to submit all components (using Google Drive, share your peer commented rough draft and a final draft document with the instructor). Deadlines are posted prominently online.Late assignments are marked down by 25% for each day they are late (therefore an assignment that is four days late receives a grade of 0). You must turn in EVERY assignment to pass the class. 10. Other Notes: If you have technical problems, contact The Virtual Campus(TVC) help desk at: (609) 570-3389 or [email protected] If you have specific, personal questions [email protected] email to contact the professoror stop by her office hours. To succeed in this class, stay on top of your deadlines andexpect to do more than you would in a face-to-face class. 11. END
