TSCA/TFA Conference

• Fees should be around $185, which includes Convention fees, TFA membership, and news

• IMPORTANT NOTE: Even if NOT attending the convention, if your school will compete at TFA tournaments, they MUST pay the $65 TFA dues before convention date!!
• **In addition, schools offering NFL Honor Society membership and/or competing at the District tournament MUST pay the $99.00 yearly dues to the NFL by the due date.

Our Governing Organizations
NFL – “Giving Youth a Voice”• Established in 1925, NFL is our Speech & Debate Honor
Society, recognized by all colleges & universities.• By competing at tournaments, students earn points toward
membership and advanced degrees.• Just a few of the benefits to students:
– Membership in an Honor Society & possible scholarship money– Higher levels of critical thinking– Better grades and study habits & Higher scores on standardized tests– Self-confidence, social skills and service to the community

NFL – “Giving Youth a Voice”• How does a student become an NFL member?
– By competing at speech tournaments, students accumulate points according to their event
– It takes 25 points to become a member– Example: Debate events reward 6 points for a win, and 3 for a loss– Beyond membership, students can gain advanced degrees
• What do the students gain with their membership?– Honor Society for resume– NFL diploma + Graduation honor cords– NFL key with jewel and other items– Ability to compete at the District tournament with the chance for Nats
• How do coaches receive points?– Coaches receive 1/10 of the students’ points

Honor Society benefits• NFL will assign you a
district (Lone Star, Longhorn, LBJ)
• Earn points at TFA, UIL and NFL tournaments
• Top 2-3 students from district tournaments will qualify for Nationals (Kansas City ‘10, Dallas in 2011)
NFL Stars• Oprah Winfrey competed in Lincoln-Douglas Debate in high school
and competed at National Forensic League nationals.• John Laroquette (star of Night Court and the now defunct John
Laroquette Show) went to college in the south on a forensics scholarship.
• Nancy Cartwright (the voice of cartoon character Bart Simpson) competed for Ohio University.
• Lee Iacocca (Chrysler Corporation) also competed in Extemporaneous Speaking.
• In addition to the many debates of his public career, Malcolm X debated teams from Harvard, Yale, and other New England colleges as part of the Norfolk Prison (Massachusetts) debating program.
NFL Stars• Shelley Long (Cheers) did
Original Oratory at Ft. Wayne Southside High School in Indiana. She had an in-state rivalry with Dateline NBC anchor Jane Pauley who attended Chesterton High School. She went on to win the National Championship with her speech about the need for sex education (1967).

TFA Events• Speech tournaments
are offered in our area about every weekend.
• Pick your tournaments to attend according to your budget, team needs, and schedule constraints.
• Students who place in Final rounds earn TFA State qual points (they need 10 to go to State)
UIL Events• UIL Districts is held in
March against other 4A schools in our area.
• Top 2 students in each event will advance to UIL Regionals
• Students who place in Final rounds will qualify for UIL State in Austin
• UIL should be paid for by your campus UIL Coordinator
