Sacramental Preparation

Baptism: All Baptisms are celebrated on the fir st Sunday of the month at 9:45 AM. The preparation process should begin at least three months before the planned date of the Bap-tism. A Baptism Preparation Class is required for parents (godparents may attend if they wish). This class is offered on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9:45 AM. Please call the parish office to register. The date of the baptism is scheduled after attending the class. Parish membership and active wor-ship is required for two months prior to preparation.

Haven’t Received Your Sacrament on Schedule? Families of children in grades three and up who have been baptized but have not yet received any formal religious educa-tion, as well as those who have not been baptized, should con-tact the Parish Office for information on how to proceed.

Initiation of Adults and Older Children: This is an extend-ed formation process for unbaptized or uncatechized adults or baptized Christians of other faith traditions who wish to be-come members of the Catholic Church, as well as for unbap-tized or uncatechized school-aged children. Please contact the parish office for more information. Initiation is celebrated at the Easter Vigil after a formation period of one or two years.

Adult Confirmation: This is a program for persons over the age of 18 who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist, but who never completed their initiation with the Sacrament of Confirmation. The program is a 10-12 week program, with Confirmation being celebrated on the So-lemnity of Pentecost. Please call the parish office for more details.

Matrimony: Couples wishing to marry in Good Shepherd Parish are required to make initial arrangements at least one year in advance. Four sessions with the priest or deacon, as well as Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter take place during this year. Parish registration and active worship for at least two months are required before a date may be scheduled.

Anointing of the Sick: Anyone who is ser iously ill or unable to come to church for a length of time should contact the par-ish office to arrange for the Anointing of the Sick. Eucharistic Ministers bring Holy Communion to homebound parishioners every Sunday, and one of the priests will visit on the First Fri-day of each month. Please call the parish office to make ar-rangements. The Diocese of Metuchen provides Catholic priests to serve at all local hospitals.

Holy Orders: If you are interested in learning more about the priesthood or religious life, contact the Vocations Office of the Diocese of Metuchen at 732-562-1990, ext. 1700 or by email at [email protected] or visit www.diometuchen.org/vocations.

Parish Registration:

We welcome you to the Good Shepherd Parish Community!

Please register at the Parish Office as soon as you are able to do so, and the staff will be more than happy to inform you about our parish and the opportunities we offer. Parish regis-tration is required for religious education, celebration of all Sacraments and certification as a sponsor for Baptism and Confirmation. Regular Sunday worship with us indicates a practicing Catholic, not just parish registration. An assurance of family practice and raising children in the faith they seek is necessary for the sacraments of initiation and certification of sponsorship. Please notify the parish office of any changes in phone number, address, e-mail address or when leaving the parish.

If you are interested in requesting: Masses, Sanctuary Candle

Altar Flowers or Blessed Mother Flowers In Honor of/Memory of a loved one for the 2017

year please contact the Parish Office (732) 826-4859.

(Dates are available for the Sanctuary Candle in the Oratory only, which is located in our Parish Center.)

A Letter FROM OUR PASTOR:

It’s hard to believe that May is almost done, that this weekend is Memorial Day, the unofficial “start” of the summer season and that the Easter Season ends next Sunday with the Solemnity of Pentecost. And we’re in for a few busy weeks as graduations are celebrat-ed. So, with that said, here goes for this week

“Come, Holy Spirit!” Next Sunday is the Solemnity of Pentecost, the end of the Easter Season. It is (r ight after Easter and Christmas) the third most important day of the entire Church Year. At the end of Mass, the Paschal Candle will be solemnly extin-guished before the dismissal, after which it will be returned to its usual position by the baptismal font. As we’ve done the past few years, we will mark this day with the Sacrament of Confirmation at the 11:00 AM Mass. While we only have one adult being con-firmed this year, it’s a wonderful way to mark this day. So please remember our candidate Andrea who will be receiving this Sacra-ment. As we’ve also done the past few years, this week we have our Novena in Preparation for Pentecost. As we read in the Acts of the Apostles, after Jesus’ Ascension, Mary and the Eleven gathered in the Upper Room in Jerusalem, praying for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. These nine days of prayer are the original novena of the Church, when we, too, ask the guidance and strength of the Holy Spirit. Novena prayers will be said after daily Mass, and this special Novena will take the place of our usual Novena prayers this Wednesday and Saturday mornings. And don’t forget to wear something red to Mass next weekend!

Festa is ONE WEEK FROM SATURDAY! Have you signed up to help out yet? Everything is coming together nicely for this annual fundraiser – but it takes everyone’s help to make it a success – not only those who work in setting up, working at the Festa and cleaning up afterwards, but especially through your support. So plan on joining us on June 10th. If you remember, last year Bish-op Checchio showed up for lunch, and I know he’s hoping to be with us that day, too!

While things slow down a bit in the Summer, a LOT is still happening around the par ish! On Sunday, June 11th, we will have our last Family Mass for the school year, and at that Mass we’ll have a special blessing for all our graduates. If you would like to honor a child or grandchild who is graduating, please call the Parish Office this week, as we’re finalizing the list for the June 11th bulletin. The following Sunday, June 18th (which is also Father’s Day) is the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, or Corpus Christi. Plans are underway for the city wide outdoor Eucharistic Procession that afternoon. In addition to that, we will again have a Eucharistic Procession and Benediction in church at the end of the 11:00 Mass. We did this a few years ago, and it was very well received. This year’s Vacation Bible School will be the week of July 17-21. This program is building up every year, with new young volunteers and students having a great time. Registration forms are available at the Parish Office. Finally, since a lot of people like to stay close so that their children can attend Vacation Bible School, we’ve scheduled the Parish Picnic for the following Sun-day, July 23rd. Once again, it will be immediately following the 11:00 Mass that day, right on our parish grounds. Everyone had a good time last year, and we’re hoping to make it even better this year – and hopefully the weather will cooperate as nicely as it did last year! We’ll start taking reservations for the Picnic on Monday, June 12th – the flyer will be in the bulletin on June 10/11.

During the next week, many of us priests celebrate our anniversaries of Ordination, so please remember us in your prayers – and continue to pray for vocations, especially in our Diocese. The next few weeks we’re expecting to see some changes, as four pastor-ates will be opening up, so especially pray for those priests who will be moving to new assignments.

As for me this week – you may not see too much of me. I have a summons for jury duty this Tuesday. Hopefully only one day!

Mass attendance for May 20/21 was 512.

May 31st is the beautiful Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the end of “Mary’s Month.” Don’t forget the Rosary (and Mass) that day!

Have a great week ahead, Fr. Mike

Intercessory Prayer

Intercessory prayer is the act of praying on behalf of others. All Christians are called to be Intercessory. All Christians have the Holy Spirit in their hearts and, just as Christ intercedes for us in accordance with God’s will (Romans 8:26-27), we are to intercede for one another. Nothing is too small to request from our Lord, Jesus. Nothing is insignificant to him.

At the Good Shepherd Parish our Children have em-barked on a mission of Intercessory Prayer by pray-ing nightly at 9:00 pm. We have been conducting classes on Intercessory prayers so that our youth are prepared to be Intercessors. Weekly they are presented with the prayer re-quests from parishioners. We pray and then they go forth with their mission work.

Some of the benefits of the Intercessory Prayers: It increases God’s Protection. It strengthens us to do what God is calling us to do. It removes feelings of aloneness. It builds our relationship with God and increases our faith. If you wish to join or be added to the prayer list, please contact

Mrs. Mildred Padilla-Morales at 732-738-3909.

The old line says “if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.” Many of us are diligent in our planning, making sure things are progressing smoothly, then disaster strikes, we don’t get the result that was intended. An unforeseen problem arises. Many times we may respond negatively. Why me? I did everything right! Here’s the thing – God has a different and better plan in store for you.
