Light reading may have

deep meaning

Every week of the year, we come to celebrate our faith in community at Liturgy. We also are given the

opportunity to engage in a little light reading (after Mass, of course!). What reading? Why, the

bulletin!

The lowly, perhaps under-appreciated bulletin is the primary vehicle of written communication among

ourselves. We inform each other of the sacramental life happening around us; the births and bap-

tisms; the initiations into reconciliation and the Eucharistic life, the opportunity for the sacraments of

healing, of forgiveness, of confirmation in faith. The cycle of life is also celebrated in the passing of

family and friends among us in the wonderfully celebrated Masses of Christian Burial. Our strong

commitment to social concerns is present in nearly every page. Thoughtful ―main bulletin articles‖

seen on this very page are carefully crafted to reflect insights that have been generated as a result of

our lived life together.

Reading about the events of our parish that are happening are not merely informational pieces; as a

whole, they are a reflection on the activities, opportunities and values of our particular parish

community.

Sometimes there is a bit of repetition and it may seem like we are playing a game of ―Where’s Waldo‖,

but in this case it’s ―Where’s the new stuff?‖ We do run some articles 3 or more times depending on

space and/or the proximity of the date to the activity. But most certainly, there is always something

new, and fresh and informative that tells us more about each other.

So, next time you pick up your bulletin or are handed one by our great ushers, take it home and

consider what an archaeologist years ahead might think of what we are saying to one another; from

an outside perspective, this light reading may have deep meaning.

What’s new in the bulletin this week?

Come, join in freshening up some of the parish rooms with paint!

Several opportunities to learn a little something new

about Catholicism.

Don’t forget the front cover which makes note of happenings

in the coming week.

Learning the Art and Practice of Christian Companionship You’re invited to consider signing up for the Spiritual Mentoring Program – a

two-year program offered once a month (from Sept. through May) on Satur-

days (8:30 am to 3:30 pm). The purpose of this pro-

gram is to form and equip persons to be faithful in

their spiritual walk, to become true companions to

others as they journey and live out their relationship

with God, and to become adept in discerning the

movements of the Spirit in themselves and others.

Seventeen of our fellow parishioners have attended

this program and speak highly of it. Tuition is

subsidized in part by the Eschweiler New Century Fund. Contact Jane Clare

for more information at [email protected] or 262 255 2035.

Opportunities to Grow in Faith Together! Here are two excellent programs being offered by Cardinal Stritch Univer-

sity’s St. Clare Center for Ministry Formation. Interested parishioners will be

subsidized by our Eschweiler New Century Fund for these programs:

1. Pentecost Mission – a basic adult religious education series –

offered 8 Saturday mornings in Fall (8:30 to 11:45 a.m.) Some topics cov-

ered: Jesus and the Gospels, Sin and Grace, Church History. Some of the

presenters: Dr. Dan Scholz, Fr. Andy Nelson, Fr. Steve Avella.

2. Certificate in Lay Ministries – a more intense two-year program

offered on Saturdays (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) This program is grounded in the

four formation elements outlined in the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bish-

ops’ document, ―Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord,‖ – intellectual,

spiritual, human and pastoral formation. A full and rich adventure in adult

faith formation!

Both programs start August 29, 2009. For more information call Jane

Clare in the parish office.

RCIA, Rite of Welcoming The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the Catholic Church’s cate-

chumenal process of welcoming new members. It is our way to assist and

accompany prospective Catholics on their journey to become full and active

members of a community of believers. On Saturday, August 8, 2009, at the

4:30 Mass, Good Shepherd will celebrate the Rite of Welcoming (those

baptized in another tradition) with Allen Braeger. Please welcome him, and

encourage and support him on his journey of faith.

What is Personal Prayer after Mass? I’m very glad you asked. Personal prayer after Mass is available for any one

desiring a prayerful experience. At times, perhaps you would like the

support of praying with another person for a personal intention. You may

want to consider a prayer of thanksgiving or a prayer for a special blessing.

We have also had small groups gather when a friend or family member was

in need of prayer.

Prayer leaders feel privileged to have the opportunity to pray with you on

any subject. Listen for the announcement after Eucharist whenever a per-

sonal prayer leader is available after Mass. All are welcomed.

least 30 minutes on Valentine’s Day, 7-year-old Tiffany Dombrowski was

healthy 7-year-old who shows no physical signs of her trauma. Her

thankful family attributes her recovery to God. Read how the ordeal

What a promise! Jesus promises:

“No one who comes to me shall

ever be hungry, no one who

believes in me shall thirst again.”

Just what the world needs. Who

will spend a life-time telling others

of this promise? (And the many

other Promises as well.)

Many hands, light work? Some people serve on parish com-

missions and committees that

carry out the functions of a parish

on a year in and year out basis.

Other people prefer short term in-

volvements—a commitment of time

and energy that is over in a defin-

able amount of time. If you are this

second kind of a person here is an

opportunity for you----

There are a few areas of the parish

buildings that could use some

freshening-up through a fresh coat

of paint. A parishioner is donating

the paint; now we need the hands

to put it on the wall. You’ve

painted at home or maybe even as

a professional; we’re trying to get a

group together –as the old German

saying goes ―many hands make

light work‖.

Please call the parish office.

Un/under-employed A group of parishioners, cluster

members and LARCUM members

gathered at Good Shepherd on July

14th for an exploration around the

needs of those unemployed or un-

deremployed. It was decided to

meet monthly at this time and keep

in touch via email in-between. All

interested parties are invited to

participate. The next gathering is

on August 12, 7pm, in the chapel

(south entrance) and will serve as

ongoing support for those who are

struggling with employment issues.

Unemployment Networking Do you have any ideas or have you

heard of job postings?

Some parish and cluster members

needing work have skill sets in the

following areas:

Manufacturing/Industrial

Engineering

Marketing

Church organist/keyboard

Welding

Administration Management,

Customer Service

Field of dietetics

Please call your ideas into the par-

ish office, or make note on the job

board in the narthex. Thanks!
