Praised be Jesus Christ! Do you remember the show, “Welcome Back Kotter”? It ran from 19751979, so my recollection of it is very
vague. The only reason I bring it up is because this weekend we’re welcoming everyone back to Holy Name. Even though not everyone
will come back immediately (and we both understand and respect this caution), it will be a tremendous blessing to have Mass together
again after 10 weekends apart. Dorothy from the “Wizard of Oz” hit the nail on the head: “There’s no place like home!”

Thanking and praising God for helping us during the pandemic will definitely make this an emotional weekend. Now that we’re
gradually returning to being together, we realize that things won’t be entirely as they once were. We pray for patience and true charity
as we adjust to some of the changes that are for our safety and health. Speaking of changes, maybe you noticed that our playground has
been restored to health. Some generous parishioners spearheaded that project and it turned out beautifully. The church floors are waxed,
the new lights are in, the painting is finished, and we’re just waiting for the carpet installers to come before the church makeover is
complete. And hopefully you’re marveling about how much better you can hear the sound system in church has been given an upgrade
and the difference is amazing. All of these improvements are thanks to generous parishioners who love God and Holy Name. We’re
indebted to them thank you, one and all!

Other changes that you will notice sooner or later have to do with our seminarians. Most of you already know John Duranso, who is
back at Holy Name after being away for a while. John will be entering his final year of college seminary at Saint John Vianney on the
campus of the University of Saint Thomas in the Twin Cities. He has been my faithful copilot during the pandemic, as he joined me for
private Mass nearly every day since March 19
th
. Even though he was the only member of the congregation, I gave him a daily homily
anyway. It’s likely that John will go straight to Heaven someday! John is staying at home for the summer and will be working until it’s
time to go back to school. I’m grateful for his presence and his vocation.

Our other seminarian is Tim Reither. He came to Holy Name on May 13
th
and will be with us until late July. He will be entering his
fourth and final year of seminary formation at the North American College in Rome. God willing, he’ll be ordained a deacon at Saint
Peter’s Basilica in Rome on October 1
st
and ordained a priest in our Cathedral in La Crosse some time next June. Presently, Tim is
taking his final exams and you’re invited to pray for him so that he passes all of them. He likes to ride his bike and has an impressive
appetite. Given my limitations in the kitchen, I have stocked up on peanut butter and jelly to keep him from gnawing on the furniture.
Please introduce yourself to Tim when you see him he’s a friendly guy and a joy to have around.

Finally, you might see David Nowicki from time to time. He was with us last summer and again a few times last fall. David is from
Athens and will be going to Rome this fall to begin his four years of Theology studies and seminary formation. He’s spending the
summer learning Italian so as to be ready for classes in the fall. As with all of our seminarians, we pray for them so that through them
we will always have access to Jesus in the Eucharist. By the way, even though David is not a member of Holy Name, he went to
preschool and kindergarten here and got off to a great start in life.

Now let’s transition to First Holy Communion, which we’re celebrating for our children this Sunday at the 10:30 a.m. Mass.
The following story is about a seminarian and how he discovered his calling through his First Communion. Here is his explanation:

Growing up, I spent most of my time playing outside with my friends and siblings, hunting, fishing, horseback riding, and helping on my
grandparents’ farm. Up until I was about 16, I rarely attended mass, but I did attend CCD. When I was a freshman in high school, I
was digging through my dresser and found a rosary and prayer card I was given the day I received First Communion. I had never
prayed the rosary, but for some reason, I picked it up, knelt beside my bed, and began to pray. The more I prayed, the more I
experienced great peace. I didn’t know what exactly I was experiencing, but I was intrigued, nonetheless.

A few days after I went to the Catholic Church in town. The priest there answered and explained many of the questions I had pertaining
to what I experienced and of the Church in general. I began attending weekly mass, daily mass when it was offered before school,
utilizing the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and developing a prayer life.

I enlisted in the Wisconsin Army National Guard a few days after I turned 17 and attended basic training the summer between my junior
and senior year. This experience helped me realize how important my faith was and I began to think of the priesthood as a serious
possibility. I was attracted to the duty of the chaplains in the military and I came to realize how important priests are. Without the
priest, there is no Eucharist.

We thank God that we can come to church again and worship Him
and receive His Son, some for the very first time! And we pray for
our children, that they may find their vocation and serve God with
great joy and dedication.

May God be praised for His Providence in all of our trials!

Your friend in Christ,
Father Martin

Prayer for Vocations
Heavenly Father, Bless your Church with an abundance of holy
and zealous priests, deacons, brothers, and sisters. Give those
you have called to the married state and those you have chosen
to live as single persons in the world, the special graces that
their lives require. Form us all in the likeness of Your Son, so
that in Him, with Him, and through Him, we may love you more
deeply and serve you more faithfully, always and everywhere.
With Mary we ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pentecost Sunday
You can feel so small standing by the seashore. The vastness of all that is before you expands much farther than your eye can see. What
is happening on the other side? As tides continue to ebb and flow, what occurs as they come and go remains largely a mystery and the
effects of their presence unknown in your sight. Yet, things are moving and changing as you gaze upon the water, as the thumbprint of
their presence is left behind. The greater the wind and wave, the greater the effect. But even a gentle breeze leaves its humble mark upon
the seashore on which you stand. The smallest pebble still makes a ripple in the great blue expanse of ocean waters. It doesn’t need to be
big.
You never know the full impact of your smallest gesture or simplest of words. A yes or no, agree or disagree, here or there, this or that
can influence time and history in ways you may never know. The Holy Spirit is like that: fierce and torrential, and then almost still and
silent, creating and recreating nonetheless. Coming as a gentle breeze or a gusty wind, God’s Holy Spirit continues to move over,
around, and into the waters of our lives. The Spirit brings fruit and unknown possibilities to what we humbly bring with us and that same
Spirit eventually brings all to fulfillment in Christ.
The first disciples didn’t have much. They possessed simple faith and a willingness to go into unchartered territory with a love of their
friendGod, humble offerings, and a knowledge that they were not alone. This allowed them to do amazing things with very little. Do
you believe that you are being led and that you have a purposeful life? We often do not realize our value because we do not think that the
little we have is good enough. How wrong we are! A little flour mixed with water and embraced by a prayer of blessing transforms
simple offerings into the magnificent Eucharistic presence of God. If the Holy Spirit can do such amazing things with these humble gifts
of the earth, even more can happen with you. Don’t underestimate the value of the smile you gave a stranger, the door held open for an
elderly widow, the listening ear offered to one who was lonely, the tolerance given to the wounded soul who is angry, and the loving
shoulder you offered as a cradle under the head of someone in pain. Modest gifts offered with love can be transformed by the Spirit into
wondrous blessings you may never know. It’s Pentecost. Trust. You are not alone.

Summerfun cancelled: We tr ied our best to find a
way to safely host some form of our annual event, but
the circumstances conspired against us. I’m grateful
to all who did their best to explore other options. We
are still running the raffle. Please do your best to sell
as many raffle tickets as you can. It will be uphill sledding, but
with your charisma and determination, you can do it. We are
looking at some other future events to recapture some of the
community spirit that is fostered by Summerfun. For now, please
remember that the funds raised by Summerfun (c. $40,000.00) are
a part of our operating budget. That’s money that we’ll still need
to raise in order to balance our budget. One excellent idea is for
each parishioner to estimate the money that you would typically
spend at Summerfun and make that a donation to Holy Name.
You could put it in an envelope marked “Summerfun” and send it
our way. Thanks for your prayers during this time of uncertainty.
For the record, all of our parishioners are hanging in there and not
a single one of us is sick with COVID19. And because we don’t
want to do anything that will endanger any of you, we’ve had to
cancel Summerfun this year. But we’ll be back in 2021!

2020 Casa Hogar Juan Pablo II Mission Trip Update

In April, the 2020 Mission Team was forced to cancel our June 2020 trip to Casa Hogar Juan Pablo II orphanage in
Lurin, Peru. Initially, the hope was that the trip would just be postponed a month or two. Unfortunately, as we find
ourselves still in the midst of the COVID19 restrictions, we realize it would not be safe to take our teens and adults
to Peru anytime this summer. This fact was sadly shared with the Mission Team and all were very disappointed. Our
disappointment was short lived though, as we were able to talk about plans for a trip in the future.

First, and this is something our group is very proud of, at the encouragement of Fr. Martin, we voted to give a $1100 donation to Casa
Hogar from the money that was raised. This comes at a crucial time as Casa Hogar finds themselves trying to live through the changes
that their Coronavirus lockdown has made for the children and the staff. Many unforeseen costs have arisen within their restrictions,
some of those are: making room for employees to stay at Casa Hogar as they are not allowed to go between work and home, the shortage
of computers for the virtual learning and the increased food costs due to having more mouths to feed for more meals. Msgr. Joseph
Hirsch has recently been fundraising on Facebook for these increased costs and to help the 16 new children that were taken in from
another orphanage earlier this year. As such, this donation comes at a good time for them. They are very grateful for the generosity of
our parish and team members.

Second, all Mission Team members will be able to use the money that they have earned for a trip to Peru in the future. There are two
options that are less than a year away: 1) In January 2021 the Diocesan supported Optical Mission hosted at Casa Hogar can be attended
(this is for adults only). This January option will work better for some of the team members that will be in college at that time as it will
be during their winter break. 2) The team has been approved by Casa Hogar for a March 2021 Mission Trip during Spring Break, which
falls during Holy Week. This is especially poignant as Fr. Joseph Walijewski’s last Mass was Palm Sunday 2006 and he died just two
days later. The life and generosity of Fr. Joe is greatly felt during Holy Week by those living at Casa and in the entire community of
Lurin. To take our group at that time will offer something that going at any other time simply cannot. Of course, if any member cannot
join either of those trips, we will be going to Casa Hogar again in June 2022 for our usual trip scheduled every two years.

Where does that put all of your generous donations? The items that Casa requested are greatly needed and will be sent with individuals
or Mission teams as they go to Casa over the next year. At this time, Casa has three long term volunteers that are still trying to go this
summer. The food items and coconut oil for teeth brushing will hopefully be taken by them. The other items, will be sent on a priority
basis given to us by Casa. Anything that remains will go with the group when we take our trip in March 2021. As far as the monetary
donations given to our group, that will all be given to Casa as part of the $1100 donation mentioned earlier. God willing, our
Mission Team hopes to plan a clothing, first aid and supplies drive again in the Fall to gather the remaining items that are still needed at
Casa. Until then, any donations that you planned to send to Casa can still be dropped off at the Parish Center or the Religious Education
office. They will all be stored and be ready to go to the children as soon as possible.

Finally, thank you for all your support of the teens and chaperones for this trip. This world changing pandemic is nothing that anyone
would have ever expected, but one that we have worked through as a group. Our team has grown together over the course of the last
nine months and we will continue to stay connected with our love and commitment for the children and mission of Casa Hogar.
