Primary Years Program:

Inquiry Learning and Values

At Brighton Primary we are proud to be educating our students for the future, to thrive and

contribute to an ever-changing global community. A strong sense of belonging is fundamental

to fostering a safe, purposeful and inclusive learning environment in which learning is

accessible to everyone.

The Primary Years Program is concept driven. It teaches our students to develop the

transdisciplinary skills needed to become, 'inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people

who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and

respect.'

Last night, our school community attended the Opening Night of the Grade 6 Exhibition where

students were able to showcase their learning.

The central idea, ‘Inclusion Enriches and Challenges Humanity’ provided students with the

opportunity to identify an area of interest to further investigate and deepen their

understanding. Students selected a wide range of issues, some of which included; equality,

racism, sport, genetics and history.

Through inquiry and application students developed their skills in directing and managing their

own learning. They also selected how best to present their understandings based on personal

preference. When responding to issues students were encouraged to select responses that

demonstrated their understanding of responsible citizenship. Student action included; starting

conversations, changing individual behaviour, writing letters, changing the way they think and

act to become more empathetic, responsible and inclusive by considering the perspectives of

others.

The cooperation and collaboration demonstrated by students, teachers and parents over the

past few weeks is commendable. The large attendance, with standing room only, at the

Opening Night was an indication of this strong sense of community as well as our student

enthusiasm for learning.

COLDS AND FLU– BE A GERM STOPPER!!

Did you know? The average child misses over 4 school days a year as a result of colds and flu each year. For children who wipe their nose on

clothing and hands this increases to 6 days per year. We are in the middle of the cold and flu season so we want to try to reduce the

spread of viruses during this time. Everyone needs to be mindful of how these viruses are spread and how to prevent this from

happening. What is good respiratory hygiene?

Viruses such as colds and flu are spread by germs that are too small for us to see. Cold symptoms such as runny noses, coughs and

sneezes spread cold germs into the air. If these germs are breathed in by another person then they may be infected with the virus.

Germs are also spread by hand to face contact and by people touching objects that can be infected and someone wiping their nose

on their hand.

So how can we stop the spread of cold and flu?

Keep your child home if they are sick or unwell – remember this allows them time to recover, and also reduces spread to other

children. Always make sure your child has their own tissues in their bag in case of runny noses. If your child has a fever and

symptoms persist make sure you seek medical review.

Don’t forget to teach your child good respiratory hygiene.

Remember to:

CATCH IT – cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you sneeze or cough.

BIN IT – Throw tissue in bin.

KILL IT – Wash your hands with soap and water.

If your child is unwell, please keep them at home until they have recovered.

Thankyou. Cecile (School Nurse)
