Arrival

Opening

Read Aloud
• Poems• Storybooks • ELA Domains
• Please pack a healthy snack CLEARLY labeled in your child’s backpack everyday, separate from
their lunch. Classrooms are nut free.• Please also pack with it a napkin, spoon, fork or
anything else they will need to enjoy their snack.
• Please do not send a drink for snack, fresh water is available in our water coolers through out the day!!!
Reading…
• Daily read alouds, shared reading, small group reading, will help develop each child’s reading ability.
• Reading groups will be formed based on each child’s reading ability.
• A student’s reading level is assessed using the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark System.
• Little books will come home each night in a baggie to be read nightly and returned the following day.
Jobs/Centers/Playtime
• Independent tasks each day “Jobs” • Listening Center• Poetry Center• Writing Center• Alphabet Center• Math Center • Projects• Free Choice Activities/Playtime
Lunch
• An account can be opened through the MW Food Service
• If you choose to send in cash, please send the money in an envelope (or baggie) with your child’s name and teacher clearly marked
• Be sure to let the school know if your child has any food allergies
Handwriting
• Handwriting Without Tears is our handwriting program that uses a developmentally appropriate approach curriculum for writing readiness skills with multi-sensory lessons.
Science
• Science 21 –Through Science 21 your child will be engaged in science activities learning how scientists ask questions and design experiments to find the answer
• Topics include-the five senses, living and non-living, plants and animals as well as exploring our world
Social Studies
• Social Studies will be incorporated into the classroom routine. Students will learn concepts such as: Myself and OthersHow to be a Good CitizenUnderstanding Wants and Needs
Phonics
• Fountas and Pinnell Reading Program• Students will work on reading,
writing, listening and speaking skills on a daily basis in both large and small groups
• Language Arts is a balanced literacy approach which helps each student build prerequisites for good comprehension and reading skills
Math
• The enVision Math Program is a district wide math program.
• This K-5 math program is based on “Big Ideas” not just skills and when these ideas are connected, students have a better understanding of mathematics and become math thinkers.
Math Topics Include
•Counting and Cardinality•Operations and Algebraic Thinking•Number and Operations in base Ten•Measurement and Data•Geometry
Specials
• Physical Education-two times a week, child must wear sneakers
• Art-weekly, a smock will be needed• Music-weekly• Library/Health- 1 trimester Health; 2
trimesters of Library ***Children may go to library daily to borrow books ****
Recess
• Recess is held outside if the weather permits (including the winter). Children need to dress appropriately.
• Please have ALL clothing labeled with your child’s name!!!!!
Dismissal
• School day ends at 2:45• Please send a note if child is being
picked up, will be taking a different bus or leaving early.
• Be sure to bring a photo ID.• Bus times will be delivered directly to
your home.
Kindergarten Curriculum
• Monroe Woodbury Kindergarten curriculum follows the rigor of the Common Core Standards
What you can do to help…
• Make sure your child can dress him/herself; snap, button, and zip.
• Use the toilet independently prior to coming to school.
• Follow two step directions.• Taking responsibility for his/her own
toys, cleaning his/her own area.
Olweus
• Monroe Woodbury School District has adopted the Olweus Anti-Bullying Prevention Program.
• All Staff are trained.• Weekly meetings are held in the
classroom to learn our Anti-Bullying program.
