TO OUR DEAR PARENTS...

Thank you for giving your child the wonderful opportunity of attending Machaneh Am Echad . We are delighted to be looking after your child this December and we look for-ward to the most memorable and exciting 21 days ever.

The name of this year’s Machaneh is “Am Echad”, literally “One Nation”. It is only when the Jewish people join together as one that we can achieve our full potential. On Bnei Akiva camp every chanich has the opportunity to be a part of this truly special experience- to be a part of something bigger.

This booklet will assist you with transport details, cloth-ing lists and all the information that you will need to ensure that your children are well prepared for Machaneh. Should you require any additional information, please call the regional office closest to you and we will be happy to assist you.

We are proud to have full time Rabbis, Sh’lichim, Doctors, Psychologists, Bachurim from Israel as well as a full complement of lifeguards, and CSO guards, and I assure you that your child is under the supervision of our capable, caring and exceptionally well-trained madrichim and edu-cational staff.

we thank the Camp Executive, Roshim, Madrichim and staff for their tireless work in ensuring a wonderful Machaneh experience.

We are delighted that your child will bea part of this memorable Machaneh.

To our very dearest Chanichim… Can you believe it’s finally here? Now, it’s only days away and the camp vibe is in the air. Your Menahelim, madrichim and I are so excited that you are joining us for the December holidays, and we have no doubt that you will have the most amazing 3 weeks ever. This year’s camp is going to be the best camp yet. We have made some revolutionary changes to the camp-site- we have new swimming pools, a new tuck-shop and much more. We have added crazy new things to the camp day to make sure every second you are having a massive jol. The ruach band is ready for our famous ruach sessions and tiyul is planned and ready. Lastly you will be doing this all with the best madrichim in the world and all of your friends! Prepare for the experience of your lives, we can’t wait to see you there! Bevirkat Torah Ve’Avodah Josh Gordon Rosh Machaneh

One of the most meaningful and enduring aspects of our camp is the atmosphere created on Machaneh. We see the Bnei Akiva camp site as a place of mutual respect, growth and dynamic interaction. We envision a Machaneh where all participants feel at home to develop and grow. This means a commitment on our behalf to always strive to offer the highest quality educational programmes, speakers and the most dedicated madrich body to be found anywhere. This year we are proud to take this ideal further with environmental projects, discussion forums and Torah learning as part of a camp which strives to find a bal-ance between fun, learning and growth.

However, we need your help in creating an environment of which we can all be proud. This means making space for others on Machaneh. Our Machaneh is the one place where both religious campers and those coming from more secular backgrounds can learn together. To create such an environment requires compromise and understand-ing from all. This we aim to achieve together by communicating with mutual respect at all times, showing value for all opinions, never patronising anyone. There is no place, in particular, for bullying on our campsite. Acts such as swearing and speaking to or about others in a degrading manner, undermine the contribution of all chanichim and madrichim to the camp environment. Lashon Hara has no place at our camp.

Finally, a large part of this is showing sensitivity, that we dress in a way which creates an environment where all can be comfortable and find room to grow. This means that short skirts and shorts, low cut shirts and sleeveless tops are not to be worn for girls and boys are not to wear sleeveless shirts, or very short shorts. We know how sensitive an issue this can be, as we express ourselves through our clothing and this is in no way a judgement on the way anyone chooses to dress. Instead this is an act of making room for other young Jews in order that all can find their place on Machaneh.

6

7

Although these ideals are expressed every year, we do intend, this year, to ensure that our environment is a comfortable one worth striving for.

We thank you for your understanding and are excited to create a Mach-aneh environment to make us all proud.

“THE LAND OF ISRAEL, FOR THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL, ACCORDING TO THE TORAH OF ISRAEL”

ERETZ YISRAEL: The State of Israel, the mitzvah of Aliyah and the deep connection with the land of Israel is central to our movement. Bnei Akiva send over 150 chanichim to Israel each year.

AM YISRAEL: The people of Israel, the Jewish people, are the focus of our movement. Although firm in our Religious Zionist ideology, we respect and learn from all other religious Jewish streams. Bnei Akiva is open to all Jewish children from all walks of life. Jewish unity is essen-tial. At Bnei Akiva, the chanich always comes first!

TORAT YISRAEL: Everything rests on a true Torah lifestyle. Bnei Akiva brought Torah and religious observance to most parts of South Africa and continues to do so. Machaneh offers a real Torah experience with many shiurim and chavrutot as well as three minyanim daily.

Greetings to all parents, Channies, Maddies and members of Kfar Chabibi,

Machaneh Am Echad promises to be the best Machaneh ever. Once again we have assembled an outstanding group of doctors to look after all your health needs.

Many of you will require minor forms of treatment (coughs, colds, scratches), while some may have special medical requirements. There-fore, in order to facilitate your health care we are asking you to please bring the following with you to camp:

General medications • Sun screen,• Plasters, • Throat lozenges, • Interflora, • Flu preparations (e.g. Sinumax, Vics) • Hay fever treatments (Claritine D, Zyretec etc), • Sprain medication (Voltaren gel) • Insect repellent (tabard)

Specific medications Bring your maintenance medications to Machaneh. If you wish, you may hand these in to the clinic on the first day. (Some campers prefer to keep it themselves)

Asthma sprays Asthma is an extremely common ailment on camp. Please make sure you bring with all your sprays and a back-up supply. It is very important that all asth-matic campers are meticulous with their medica-tion on camp.

20

21

Antibiotics Many of you require a specific antibiotic when you become ill. It makes it much easier for the doctors if you bring this with you to camp.

Diabetics If you are a diabetic, you may want to refrigerate your insulin in the clinic fridge. You will be able to administer your injections in the clinic, in private.

Other specialized medications E.g. For migraine: fever blisters etc

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLWING CAREFULLY

• We do not want anyone self-medicating. Should you feel unwell, you should come to the clinic with your medicines and the doctors will examine you and advise you on your treatment.

• Medicine will be provided by the camp clinic should you not have your own, but some days obtaining specific medication may take quite a while (public holidays and shabbos).

• Your tetanus immunization must be up to date i.e. if you have not had a booster within the last 5 years, please do so before mach-aneh. Don’t worry, this is not painful.

• Inform the doctor of your allergies when visiting the clinic.• If doctors prescribe medicine to you, be sure to take it as instruct-

ed. Please comply with the doctors’ requests.• The clinic has specific consulting times – please try to stick to them.

In the case of an emergency, there is always a doctor available.

22

Finally • Do not walk barefoot at any time• Inform your madrichim if you feel ill.• Drink a lot of liquid every day• Shower every day, and after swimming.• Please apply sun block every day, even if you are not going to the

beach.

If you have any medical problems at all, please come and see us dur-ing consultation times. We look forward to meeting you on the beach rather than in the clinic.

Wishing you call a healthy Machaneh,

The Camp Doctors

MESSAGE FROM ROSH KFAR CHABIBI

We have a fully stocked clinic of medicine this year on Machaneh Am Echad 2013. In the event that your child might be sent to hospital or require any additional anti biotics/medication that we do NOT have, please be advised that you may need to pay for this medicine. The policy of the Bayview Hospital is that they will not admit, X-ray, or treat a child until we have provided payment. Therefore, it is imperative that you have handed in your childs completed medical form to the office. If your child does not have a completed medical form, he/she will not be allowed to attend Machaneh.

On the medical forms we have your credit card details to use should the need arise to purchase additional medication. However, please also keep a record of the following bank details in order to pay in any ad-ditional charges should you prefer to pay via EFT.

This year we are working hard at creating a social responsibility pro-gramme that will have a lasting effect on all those attending camp. We so kindly ask all our chevrah to please contribute durable food items and any old clothing to this project. Please drop off these items at the Bnei Office in Joburg or when you drop off your trommel in Cape Town.
