Community Profile

CITY OF MISSISSAUGA Planning and Building Department

History

The first settlers to the area arrived in the spring of 1819 on the completion of the survey by Timothy Street and Richard Bristol. Street acquired 1,000 acres and went on to establish various industries within the pioneer community.

Prosperous farms surrounded the village and it gained commercial self-sufficiency in the 1830s. The backbone of Streetsville’s importance was its five major mill sites along a three mile stretch of the fast flowing Credit River. The Toronto Woollen Mills, owned by the Barber family, played a large role in the economic stability of Streetsville and was a major Canadian industry at the time. In 1858 Streetsville was incorporated as a village,

of 5,000. In 1974 it became part of Ward 9 in the City of Mississauga. Today, Streetsville is home to the City’s largest concentration of historical buildings and maintains a strong community spirit and remains a distinct village within the City.

with John Street as the first Reeve.

Railway development in the 1850s by-passed Streetsville. Until the opening of the Credit Valley Railway in 1879, the village depended on stagecoaches and planked roads to provide links with Toronto and points north and west.

The first half of this century brought about little change to the village apart from better roads and services. In the 1950s a steady period of expansion began with the addition of 500 acres to the village. Subdivisions began to develop on fertile farm land.

In 1962 Streetsville was granted the status of a town, with a population
